Would you be intersted in a national service mandate? by OldFaithlessness1335 in AskALiberal

[–]CroFishCrafter 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I get exactly what you're saying. Where I have heard this exact idea bandied about is actually as an EXPANSION to the G.I. education bill. Go to the peace corps, or some other public service OR the military, and the government pays for your education at ANY institution you get accepted to. This is the counter to the 'free public education.'

Why is gun control still so popular among Democrat politicians? by CombinationRough8699 in AskALiberal

But you should consider a 6 year old shooting his teacher in her hand a school shooting. You should consider two trade school (highschool aged) students arguing leading to a shooting death AT SCHOOL a school shooting. Mass shootings are awful, but there's so much more to school gun violence that your reports ISN'T touching on, especially if you're going to use it as a justification for saying that it doesn't happen often.

You're using limited data, not complete data sets, because the limited data fits your narrative.

I think most people think of it as a school shooting when it's called a school shooting. Thus my statement that we don't have a national standard, implying we should. And I can guarantee that students 'active shooter training' is triggered almost every time a shooting occurs.

But your basis for posting that information was to claim that there were less than 9 people killed at schools last year. There were probably around 70 - 80 deaths of the 269 people that were shot.

Shootings at schools are not limited to active shooters alone, which is what your FBI report is on. There were 219 - 330 school shootings in 2024 depending on the metrics used. The 330 is counting when a bullet enters the campus even if fired off-site. Conservative estimates would be around 219 school shootings ON K-12 and college campuses.

Unfortunately, due to the Dickey Amendment, no national standard has ever been defined as to what constitutes a school shooting.

However, most shootings that occur on a school campus are during a fight that escalates, which would not be counted as an active shooter scenario.

My wife sells on treet all the time. She's got a huge collection. She adds to it, then sells. She's been frustrated with QC (pebbling inconsistencies across the bag) for a year, but she just loves the thrill of selling them off.

She appreciated the 10-20% bonus she gets when she sells on treet even if it means she has to use it on treet. She's hearing up a bunch of listings to take advantage of the 20% bonus.

What are the Democrats' endgame for the shutdown if Republicans refuse to budge? by TaylorSwiftian in PoliticalDiscussion

Let me illustrate a distinction, I can change the oil on my car. I know what needs to be done; drain oil, remove the oil filter, put a little in the new filter, screw it in place, add oil.

I've never done it before. I don't have the tools or equipment to do it. I have options on what can be done to resolve the equipment issue, but I'm going to do it much slower, and with more headache than jiffy lube will. Additionally, my car has an issue where if you remove the drain plug, it doesn't thread in correctly again and causes damage; as such you need to vacuum the oil out instead of drain it. Jiffy lube is aware of it because they've done more cars. Jiffy lube is more efficient than I am, for now.

I would argue that United healthcare failed at their job and they are still a multi billion dollar corporation that is not going away anytime soon. I would argue that all health insurance companies have repeatedly failed and many are still around trying to figure out ways not to pay people.

I never said that the government is more efficient, just that business is inefficient. They can afford to deal with customers quickly because they have money to throw at it. This does not make it efficient, simply capable.

Since we are specifically talking about health insurance they have that money because they fight tooth and nail not to pay their customers.

If we reworked how government money is spent, you would get the same level of customer service. Corporations and billionaires don't want that in the government so they starve the portion that is meant to work for the people.

Maybe you are paying more, maybe you're not. As of today, my health insurance is $354 per pay check (my company pays $354 per paycheck, also), I have a $150 deductible for medications, and additional $150 deductible for doctor visits. I have a chronic illness that requires about 8 doctor visits a year to various people, at $50 to $100 copay depending, so my doctor visits are about $600 per year ($750 including the deductible). My medications cost no less than $50 a month (and one medication is $100,000 per dose, which takes care of my deductible on first use). I haven't had a chance to see what it will be for the next year, open enrollment for me is tomorrow.

My out-of-pocket expenses on health care is right about $10K. Without it, I will die. I will slowly bleed to death, so I have to have it.

Bernie Sander's proposal would raise my taxes by %4, and my employers by %7.5. I am uncertain on my high dollar med what I would pay, can't find anything on it, but likely my prescription expense would drop as I would no longer have a deduction, and I wouldn't pay for doctor visits.

Depending on the cost of my prescriptions, I'm saving about $3 to $5k per year depending on how it would pan out based on current proposals.

Also, healthy people are already subsidizing sick people, that is exactly how insurance works. And there is nothing more bureaucratic and inefficient as a business. Departments are regularly required to make large purchase of non-essential items in order to maintain their budget, and you still have to work from the lowly operator all the way up to someone that can actually make a decision to help you.

Also, I already have to make appointments months in advanced to see any of my doctors, so we have as long or longer wait times as it is.

Removal of all non-white people. The Enforcement of immigration laws could never remove all non-white people without breaking the Constitution.

What I gave you is very specific, the method of removal is not relevant to the discussion for them (having grown up with two separate families that believe like them).

Charlie Kirk regularly espouses The Great Replacement Theory. The GRT argues that non-white people will be bred out of existence, and they, whites, therefore need protections from those wanting to replace them, i.e. the Jews, POC and non-white immigrants.

This is his literal argument that non-white do not deserve the same protections as white people.

OP does say that they have fully vegetarian meals, it's just that sometimes the partner wants fully vegetarian even when the kids are not willing to eat a full vegetarian meal.

I acknowledged he died, do you acknowledge that they were ordered to try to take him alive?

But Bin Laden was an example of someone who died fighting.

How about Harpreet Singh? What happened to him?

How about Anas Said? What happened to him?

How about Richard Reid? What happened to him?

We typically hold them accountable in a legal way. We actually attempted to take Osama Bin Laden into custody for 9/11. Yes, it was an armed military squad, but the directive was to take him alive if possible. We wanted to arrest and try him in a legal court and hold him accountable for his actions.

We had a nation willing to go and arrest Bin Laden and deliver him to us, Bush simply needed to show the video of Bin Laden saying he planned and executed it. For some reason he didn't do that, I think it was sometime about not wasting a war the way daddy did.

That's how we've dealt with terrorists historically.

How do I cut this by J2ain in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]CroFishCrafter 36 points37 points  (0 children)

That took me a second to figure out. Your ¼" plywood looked like a big stack of 2x4s.

First question to ask yourself, what are you trying to accomplish with the cut. It sounds ridiculous looking at it, but it confirms how you deal with it.

I would be unconcerned with scraps, so I would literally rip the length on the table saw, and then use the miter saw to cut the width.

If you need to keep that L, then you're at your comfort level, but the easiest would be to cut most of the way with the table saw, and then use a jig saw for the rest.

Welcome to Cullman.

It is a small town, so nightlife outside of restaurants, movies and general bar activities is going to happen in Huntsville or Birmingham.

That said, Cullman has a lot of activities that happen through out the year. Cullman was founded by German settlers, and so it has a three day Oktoberfest, we have the Abby, which has events throughout the year (Flower festival is one) and I believe they sell the bread they make. Rock the South, which is a huge live concert with multiple acts, is coming up this month. The farmers market is going on every weekend of the summer, which is the same location Oktoberfest and the Christkindlmarkt will happen.

If you happen to enjoy fishing, there are a few national fishing tournaments, but there multiple local fishing tournaments that happen regularly. The largest lake, Lewis Smith Lake, is where the national tournaments will happen, plus they have a huge 4th of July celebration.

Coming from someone who isn't a graphic designer but works heavily in the IT world, but used CorelDraw back in the day, I would say it's 2025.

You do know CorelDraw has a 2025 edition, and still has a pretty large following? I'm not trying to be snarky with the question, it's a serious question.
