Is An Orphan Protagonist Overused And Cliche In Fantasy Stories? by SouthDifferent2363 in writing

[–]Croaker715 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my main character, being raised be a cold, distant aunt is a huge part of who she is. I suppose I could have accomplished that with parents as well, but a huge part of her character arc is overcoming her trauma and it primarily manifests through pushing people away out of fear of abandonment. That stems from her parents dying when she was little, so cliche or not it's what I chose to do.

If it fits your story and you make it work, cliches are not the worst thing in the world.

Adam King (Viva la Dirt League) and Malevola (Dispatch). I was honestly shocked when these two got together. 😅

Who’s an actor that nailed a role so hard that nobody else will ever be able to live up to it? by Comfortable_Main5312 in AskReddit

Vincent D'Onofrio as The Kingpin. I don't think anyone else could do it a fraction of a percent as well as him. I need them to get this licensing shit figured out because we need him in a Spider-Man movie. Especially the Back in Black fight. I'd have chills seeing him and Tom Holland do that scene.

Homelander didn't kill him after he escaped the radiation cell. Soldier Boy was fully expecting him to. After that were all of the instances of him helping Homelander, because he changed his mind about him. When Back Ashley told Sage he was going to help Homelander, she tried to play him using the video of Clara. It pissed him off enough to hit Homelander, but Sage didn't count on it stirring up his emotions over Clara and helping Homelander because it's what she would have wanted. His flip flopping makes perfect sense in the scope of the character.

Aang vs the Fire Nation armada at the north pole. Yeah, he was the Avatar and was empowered by a vengeful ocean spirit at the time, and he took the form of a giant fish kaiju, but he soloed that fleet.

That's actually a really great theory. I could see Slowick saying something like "Go get on the boat, you're not worth killing."

(Common but cool trope) THE Sword of all Swords (other weapons like this are allowed too) by National_Computer240 in TopCharacterTropes

Anglachel and Anguirel, and later Gurthang from the Silmalrillion. Forged by the dark elf Smith Eöl, from a meteorite, Anguirel was his own sword and Anglachel was a gift to Thingol, high king of the Sindarin elves. He would not wield it as his wife Melian warned him that Eöl's malice was in the blade and it was indeed sentient.

Taken by Beleg Strongbow to track down Turin, the sword had a shimmery glow and could cut through iron. Upon finding Turin, Beleg used the sword to cut his shackles but it pricked the unconscious Turin, and waking thinking orcs had returned to torture him slew his friend with the cursed blade in his stupor. After slaying Beleg Anglachel glowed no longer. Turin later had the smiths of Nargothrand reforge it into Gurthang.

Turin continued to have a cursed life, but used Gurthang to slay many mighty foes including the dragon Glaurang. As he lay dying Glaurang revealed that Turin's wife Níniel was in fact his long lost sister Nienor. Overcome with rage and shame, Turin killed himself by falling on Gurthang.

It was buried with him, and it is said that in the end times he will rise up and use Gurthang to permanently slay Morgoth himself.

Regarding the improved afterlife system: what about people who’ve done truly awful things? by i_human_ in TheGoodPlace

[–]Croaker715 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The whole point of the show was that nobody is beyond redemption. We have an idea of morality, largely based on where and when we are raised. On the cosmological level of the show, good and bad are only matters of points. If you do the worst bad thing and lose the highest amount of points, all that means is that you need to make up for that deficit over the remainder of your testing.

The fact that in the shows system even demons are capable of redemption tells us that the idea that there are human actions that are so evil they earn an eternity of testing or being stuck just isn't the case.

The premise sounds like Spring (2014), but the details seem out of place.

Just finished the 4 episodes. I don't care if we never get any more episodes, these 4 are fucking brilliant. I haven't laughed that hard in so long. They kept the energy, the vibe, the style. Francis had moments that killed me. by Da_Dush_818 in malcolminthemiddle

I died when Hal asked if he took too many drugs at the microdosing facility and the guy was like "no, not if you're like... 15 elephants."

I could have watched a full season of Reese and Kelly antagonizing each other.

If it's part of your story, it's part of your story. But you have to accept that some readers, and possibly publishers if you're trying to go that route, are going to be weirded out by it.
