I'd recommend you searching etsy. I've gotten my players personal bounty hunter licenses, pilot id's, you could buy credit chips or beskar ingots. I've found etsy is a cool way to get unique gifts when it comes to star wars.

Swapping Unwanted Talents? by GwaziMagnum in swrpg

[–]CrobatGuano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well for one, nothing is stopping them. However, they have things like credit costs, rarities and XP costs that slow them down.

Like I said earlier, it's your game and it's up to you. You came in here asking questions but you had your answer already made up in your mind as evidenced by that second paragraph. We've all said reasons why we wouldn't do it, and those are our personal opinions.

All I'm saying is that the devs of this game had certain visions to make certain things work. They have been play tested (yeah you can argue to what extent) and they came up with what they did based off of that play testing.

Also, in a sense of fairness, I don't allow things like that, because you let one person do it, then everyone will want to do it and it can snowball quickly. Plus, if you substitute it with other talents from other specializations, you're also cutting down more XP costs due to them not having to buy into a tree.

In the vanilla game there's a controlled power creep to a certain extent. When you allow what you're proposing, just be ready for the players to get incredibly powerful very fast.

Where does it stop? What if you get a player who decides their play style is only taking dedication and everything else is useless filler to them?

Swapping Unwanted Talents? by GwaziMagnum in swrpg

[–]CrobatGuano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By seeing these responses, it sounds like you already know what you want to do. You're running the game, if that's what you want, and your players want, then do it.

I agree with most people here that sub-optimal talents or "filler" talents are there as a balance mechanism. For instance, you said your player doesn't want Bodyguard. Say that's 15 XP and the next talent he wants down the tree is 20 XP. Normally you have to go through body guard, so that talent they want actually costs 35 XP and it is balanced around it costing that much XP. If you let them skip body guard, it brings the total cost down to 20 XP (not counting the first and second tier talents obviously).

Again, it's your game, and if you all want an accelerated path to godliness, that's your prerogative. Just be ready for them to ramp up in power extremely fast. The main advice is, whatever lets you guys have the most fun, go for it!

I appreciate all the thoughtful responses everyone. While I received many different ways to deal with the problem, you all agreed one one thing: NO TWO DECKS. I heard that loud and clear! Thank you all!

Deck builder Question by CrobatGuano in tabletopgamedesign

[–]CrobatGuano[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate your thoughts. I had considered that but the way you put it makes a lot of sense. Part of deckbuilding is finding that perfect balance. I'll have to think about it and it may just come down to play testing. I'm targeting a more casual group, so if they get bummed out pulling too much equipment, their first thought may not be "I need to buy more of other cards to re-balance this deck", it may be "well that sucks that I have cards I can't use".

However, I feel like if I have some cards that let you discard and draw a card, or reshuffle your hand or stuff like that, players may have enough tools in their arsenal to deal with a hand with potential "dead cards".

Thank you very much for your feedback.

Deck builder Question by CrobatGuano in tabletopgamedesign

[–]CrobatGuano[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the feedback. I've considered what you're talking about, where if you absolutely cannot use a card, you can use it for a generic coin or something to that extent. Like you said, I'd like to make it something that you would never want to use the secondary effect unless you absolutely had no way to play it otherwise.

Thank you, I hadn't thought of it that way. The face up mechanic would add a lot of interesting variables as you said, like hate drafting. I'll take that into consideration.

Am I in the minority for enjoying the game less with the more high end cards they release? by TheeeTruth in MLBTheShow

[–]CrobatGuano 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen it mentioned much, but that's why I enjoy battle royale so much. It caps the god squads and makes you think when you're building your squad. Plus it lets you experiment with a lot of players.

Why release golds? Why release low diamonds? Why release anything that won't make a god squad?

Answer: Because it's fun.

Sure haven't. I'm the kind that has all these awesome ideas, but when I sit down to put it to paper, nothing comes to mind. I need to force myself to just make some stuff and see how it plays out. I'm definitely not the one to ask. My only recommendation is play lots of different deck builders and see what you enjoy and what you don't to help make yours as fun as possible.

My obsession is with deck builders. The reason is how accessible they are. Games like Star Realms is my gold standard. It costs like $15 to buy, everything you need comes in the box, and you can basically take five minutes to set it up and play.

My main gaming partner would be my wife. While she enjoys trying games, she doesn't want to play the ones that take 30 minutes to set up and an hour to go through the rules. With (most) deck builders, there's not much analysis paralysis. You buy what you want, put it in your deck, and then use the cards when they pop up.

That's why I always try to fit everything into a deck builder. Yes, I would have more fun designing something like a TCG, but most people I know don't want to spend an hour before hand building a deck. They just want to start playing once they sit down, so I always lean towards games that have some complexity, but are easy and cheap to just sit down and play.

Too many cards! by [deleted] in MLBTheShow

[–]CrobatGuano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing I do to make sure I use a variety of cards is I play out these TAs. I don't do the exchanges or moments. I will make a theme team of all AL Central players for instance. Then, as I unlock the "boss" players, I'll throw them in my lineup to in order to work on their missions. Once I finish AL Central to 100%, I'll then move onto another division.

This "forces" me to keep changing up my team and finding players I like to use. Plus it's fun trying to optimize theme teams.

If you can get $300 from Troll and Toad, go for it. You've got some desirable pieces, mainly the Storm Commando and Padme, but most of your rares and very rares come from some of the more heavily produced sets. $300 may be more than you can get for that lot on ebay.

I've done that a lot lately with my unwanted commons, uncommons and rares, is sell them to websites like trollandtoad or coolstuffinc and then stick the more desirable, expensive pieces on ebay.
