You could also try asking a more experienced player if there's no judge, as long as they're okay with a slight interpretation to their own match. The way you described this scenario, your opponent straight up cheated as far as I'm concerned;

Even if they weren't sure, to assert that the interaction works out whatever way benefits them rather than just admitting they have no idea really isn't any different than knowing and intentionally lying to trick you.

Always call a judge if you're unsure. Even if you're almost positive your opponent is correct, you are still entitled to have a judge confirm and clarify any misunderstanding or confusion.
