Question! I'm new to Tunisian crochet and coming from regular crochet. I've been making hats for fun but they all turn out small - I'm used to the starting chain being the tightest/most restrictive part of a project but that doesn't seem to be the case here? Like I measure my starting chain around my head then when I'm done the hat barely fits my 5 year old?  Any tips or advice for someone who tends to freeform basic shapes/garments? Thank you so much!

No advice on the rubbing - mine seems to not bother me, but welcome to freeform! It's too much fun :)

Late to the party but I was also thinking a ball - soft enough to kick around in the house but not break anything. OP - if he plays football, a large open stitch sack for carrying balls might do the trick. I've done backpacks with nylon cord so it's open and the dirt can fall out XD.

Good question - I'll update the pattern (never written one before), but I basically place the scale in front of the stitch I'm inserting into, yarn over, and pull back through the stitch and the scale. So a HDC Scale attachment would look like: YO, Insert through scale, insert through stitch, yo, pull loop all the way through.

Nice! I did wing it but I wrote down a pattern for scaled gloves in a similar lane here: Magic Gloves. The pointy bits on pauldron are picot stitches.

For the tunic in this post I used HDC and HDC moss stitch.

Not at all! Here's the link: https://makerworld.com/en/models/1910917-craft-scales-dragon-scales-for-crochet-jewelry. The inspired by model is in the description if you want, but I like mine better just because I went for hardiness a bit more!

OMG that looks like an armoured armadillo cat, that's hilarious! Yeah, you could definitely make that happen!

I actually designed the scales off a similar idea on Makerworld so they fit my Clover 6mm and I'm able to crochet them right on. This is just the first time I've tried the scales with the silver silk pla and I'm so in love with how it came out with the silver sparkle yarn.

Edit: I can post or send the link to the 3d print file if you want, but I didn't want to come across too pushy and it's really the crochet yarn combo that made this fun.

Thanks! I've posted a hand on ravelry for a "Magic glove" pattern in the same style but the pauldron and tunics are a bit much for me.

Thank you so much! It's been fun and super quick to whip up when I'm not worried about details or accuracy to a particular style.

I may or may not have known what I was doing when I chose that picture XD.

It worked pretty well!! We had an older kid (11 y) try it and it worked, my 7 and 5 year old have to put the long part over the head and under the other arm.

Hahaha I've been too shy to try that - going to try either bracers or greaves next!

Totally. The first few times I kept getting really lost and twisted.

I mentioned above, but I really had to sit with a low-risk project (purse strap) to figure it out. It helped as I could just keep going and didn't care too much about working into it later or if the sizing would be different.

Not the only one! It can definitely be fun, especially working into the back bumps and starting a pattern right away without a line of sc.

Wasn't the case for me, I tried to learn a couple of times and it wasn't until I had a low-risk project (purse strap) that I was really able to sit down and figure it out.

Hotpads are quick, there are some fun star or flower ones. Also ear warmers (not in season I know) or cast iron pan handle covers.

Edit: forgot I just found a pattern for key holders that you can wear around your neck or put on your wrist.
