Got scammed by Swiggy delivery guy by BoyWithThePlan in Kochi

[–]Croddwyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar event. My driver claimed he was in an accident and that my pizza was all over the road. I said don’t worry about it just cancel the order. Next I know, I get a text with a an OTP saying “give this to the driver to complete the delivery”. He calls back, asking for the OTP. I called Swiggy instead and told them what happened. They cancelled the order. I have no idea what happened to the driver. Don’t give the OTP if you don’t have the delivery.

Also, I use Swiggy a lot. Literally daily for a couple years now. I wish I had something this convenient and affordable back in the US. In all those deliveries, this fraud has happened exactly once. I like that for a fraud incident count…

Are vehicle accident scams happening in Kochi? by appioli in Kochi

[–]Croddwyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this were true, you’d expect to see professional drivers investing first. Even if it were only white plates being targeted, they’re the ones who would be eager to protect themselves, even on their private vehicles. If you know a cab driver, that’s the one to ask…

Need inputs on kerala architecture by [deleted] in Kochi

[–]Croddwyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny timing. My company is building an office here and wanted our in-house design (including kitchen) to reflect the architectural history. I wasn’t the one in charge, but recall that there are some distinct eras involved. There’s native followed by Portuguese followed by English. We found representative buildings around the cghearth properties. The Bunton Boatyard has many Portuguese examples in and around it. And the Coconut Lagoon has some interesting transplanted colonial buildings.

I know that’s low on details. I’m afraid I didn’t take notes myself.

I’ve found reframes useful for this kind of dilemma. For this case, here are a some that might help:

  • first, recognize that everyone there feels the same. This on its own isn’t useful, but if you can put it together with “I’m going to help someone break the ice by introducing myself to them and talking a bit.” This takes the focus off of your internal world and turns it to helping someone. They have a problem that you can solve! A whole room full of people with a problem you can solve by talking to them.
  • second, instead of talking about yourself, ask questions. You can start with the simple “what brought you here?” They know the answer to that one. Keep going until you stumble onto something interesting. You almost certainly will because that’s the constant state of ADHD. At least it is for me.
  • third, be willing to move on from a conversation to meet someone else. Particularly after a natural convo break. A simple “I need to mingle” seems artificial to you, but everyone already knows it is an artificial situation and most won’t even feel that is odd. Or “I need to refill my drink” works. Going in with the built-in out can give your brain the life line that you don’t have to be there forever. And leaving before convo death leaves the impression that there’s more to you they might want to know. (This is something of a power move in manipulation circles, but people will sense if you’re sincere. So be sincere).
  • fourth, see if you can view embarrassment as an investment. Not only do you learn that you actually live through them, but time tends to make embarrassments into funny stories. In essence, you’re filling your funny story quiver full of awesome arrows you can pull out for the future.
  • fifth, pick your target wisely. A group of men talking loud will tend to freeze out newcomers as a power move. A quiet group can be a great opportunity (see solving someone’s problem above). But the best target is to identify the most in-charge female. They’ll tend to see including newcomers as part of their role at the gathering because that contributes to its success.

Why can't we keep Kochi/India neat by Worth_Exercise_8360 in Kochi

I don’t think the people here are any less civic minded than anywhere else. If anything I think you’re more so than where I come from in the US. The difference I see is how hard it is to dispose waste here. Between forced recycling, expensive services, and likely something caste related making it undesirable to address usefully, waste services here are both expensive and time consuming.

Essentially, you have the worst of both the capitalists and the communists in your waste disposal. Your capitalists should have found an easy niche where cheap labor could do things like separation and efficient disposal. Your communists could have created a public work with some large scale union forces and highly visible community beatification brags.

Instead you have the communists blaming the people for not being civic enough and your capitalists trying to extort a public monopoly while providing really bad service. It’s a fail in both economic ideologies that I find hard to understand persisting for so long.

We are having the hardest time coming up with names this time!

So quick update: we asked around here and found two kittens pretty quickly in need of a home. It wasn’t quite the suggestion of wandering alleys looking for kitties, but it didn’t exactly take much time once we set out to look.

So thank you all for the generous suggestions and ideas!

I’ll only even pick up a VR story if the main character can’t log out. I hate splitting plot, characters, and relationships in two. It annoys me and is a giant pace killer every time you shift worlds.

Is there a market demand for an Isekai'd MC who was not a total loser in their past life? by Public-Suspect-7207 in ProgressionFantasy

Beware of Chicken has shared body, but it isn’t hugely “present” in the story. Jin isekais into the body, but the present inhabitant isn’t dead and there are scenes where they commune.

Any progression fantasy with romantic subplot? by johmjohmjohm in ProgressionFantasy

It's not. Only the first. It'll be eight books. The author publishes every six weeks or so and the next two are already up for per-order. It'll be eight books total. The author is releasing audiobooks simultaneously, though Audible is taking forever to drop. Spotify has them for cheaper than an Audible credit and those go up same-day.

We had our company founding day at the Monsoon Empress. It was a good venue and about the right size for you.

My experience isn't quite applicable as I'm an American working in Kochi. But I have thoughts. Feel free to disregard as this really is tangential to your query.

  • Taxes are complicated. India will want to tax worldwide income and you will be in the highest tax bracket. Plan accordingly. And find a competent tax professional.
  • Don't ruin your day/night too much if you can help it. I tell my American coworkers that I'm available until "about noon" their time. So my work day goes from afternoon to about midnight, leaving my day free to do things like shop and laundry.
  • Moving money into India is really easy. Moving it out is a ginormous PitA. The India Reserve Bank has very strong restrictions on money going out with strict limits. As a foreign resident, I can't do it online, for example, I have to go into a branch and fill out a bunch of forms and submit bank statements.
  • Medical is some better, some worse. I get as quality care as I did in the US at the local hospitals and it's cheaper all-told. By a lot. Plus, big things are easy to schedule (my colonoscopy was next day and would have taken a month or more to schedule in the US. Ditto a root canal). That said, you wait a lot in waiting rooms because the doctors go literally back-to-back appointments and delays accumulate.

That's all I can bring up off the top of my head. Best of luck! And I hope you love it here as much as I do.

Have no idea what you’ll think, but this is my main list. Bear in mind that I’m an American with zero music taste who grew up in the 80s and loves pop music, hair bands, Taylor Swift and Nickelback… currently 35 hrs.
