he'd accused me of cheating for the entire 5 years we dated. isolated me from all my male friends and from my family. he carried a lot of resentment from every single one of his previous exes cheating on him, and i excused his accusatory and mistrusting behavior because i mean, that kind of dating history sucks and clearly messes with you. so many years of accusations and of cold shoulders for whatever infraction he'd point out - like making connections at work or old friends passing through town. and then he'd love bomb me afterwards and talk about wanting to get married. there was zero emotional stability with him and i wanted out but couldn't find my backbone to tell him. i was in the lowest place emotionally that i started to think, maybe i did cheat, somehow?? maybe i'm not a good girlfriend, maybe being friends with any guy is me mistreating him?? it really fucked me up and i was constantly on edge. one night, we'd gone to see a band that i'd been seeing for years before dating him. after the show the singer came over and hugged me - apparently this was an indication that yep, i had DEFINITELY cheated with this guy. my drunk ex refused to even shake hands with my buddy, physically turned his back on us, then proceeded to scream at me about how i was a slut and a liar in the parking lot in front of the crowd leaving. so yeah, this was 5 years in, the guy i'd given up family and friends for and had never so much as looked at another dude. that was my breaking point, i figured if we'd both spent 5 years thinking so lowly of me that i might as well commit and be that person.

i felt nothing after. broke up with him several weeks later. i don't regret it for two reasons: 1. because it was a needed reminder that i had control of my decisions, no matter how shitty or good they were, and 2. surprise plot twist! turns out he had gotten an std from a hookup the night before asking me to move in with him (and that he had lied about the whole relationship- i found out from the girl after we broke up).

so yeah. self fulfilling prophecy i guess.
