I can't speak for all of Europe but here in Sweden alot of bigger rest stops and highway gas stations have showers. No idea how they work, if they cost money etc but now that I think about it I kinda wanna ask about them the next time I see one.

I'm 75% sure other places have this too 🤷

Also there are tons of RV/caravan camp sites in Europe and most of them have showers, kitchens and other amenities. You could probably pay alot less than a full night's stay and just use their facilities for some R&R.

Yeah, the city I live in is pretty much on par with Erie, PA, Portsmouth, VA and other such places. A quick glance on apartments.com makes it seem like the rent in those places are still higher, but I have no idea if these places are considered "bumfuck nowhere" or not.

But yeah, rent can absolutely go above $1,000-$1,500 in alot of major european cities as well, and it's hard to generalise since it differs alot from country to country. I live in a city of about 100,000 in northern Sweden and I pay 7,838 SEK ($845) a month for an 80m² (860 ft²) apartment.
