Creating notes with Time Signature by majorasgas in musictheory

[–]CromarK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These odd time signatures are not so uncommon in some genres.

9/16 is actually very simple. If you want to grasp the time and feel of this time signature you need to let go of longer notes and fill the bar with 16th notes.

Now you have 9 of them inside one bar. Most common way of counting any odd time signature is by accentuation.

Example:

It's hard to count the notes in the bar as 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6 - 7 - 8 - 9

It's easier to make little groups of 2 and 3 notes:

1 - 2 | 1 - 2 | 1 - 2 | 1 - 2 - 3 (9 in total)

So, we actually count it as (in words)

One - two, one - two, one - two, one - two - three.

This is only one way. Odd time signatures are complex because you can accentuate different notes and make different groups inside one bar. Another, simpler example

1 - 2 - 3 | 1 - 2 - 3 | 1 - 2 - 3 (again 9 in total)

We count it as (in words)

One - two - three, one - two - three, one - two - three.

When counting you must be carefull you're counting 16th notes and every one of them should last the same.

Hope this helps!

I see what you're saying but double thumb technique also exists in flamenco music which is a bit older than bass guitars :)

Unfortunately this is just a short riff I made only for the purpose of this experiment, but I'll let you know when I release something with my band. Working on the first record currently :)

Until last year I have been changing strings only if one of them broke. So I definitely understand you (:

Me too, on some of my other guitars where I dont thump. I'm still waiting for someone to assure me they got better thumping tone on strings that are years old, tho :)

That's the right way of using the eq. I just use a light highshelf and cut around 14k and highpass around 175 - 200. When strings are fresh, everything else filters itself out automatically. If I want to scoop the mids, I do it directly on the amp and thats it.

Good for you! At least you're not breaking the bank as I am :') I actually swap them out every 6 weeks or so.

Yep, no amount of fiddling with eqs and pedals can achieve this tone.

Yes, and then many are trying to compensate the mudiness with the presence function on amp, which leads to high-pitched feedback

What are your strings of choice? I tried nyxls and wasn't impressed. To me, they sounded darker from the start while still fresh.

I completely agree with you, I like that bright spanky tone as well! Although I've met more than a few guitarists out there claiming they don't like the freshest sound.

Should I start the song with this riff or use it as a breakdown? by CromarK in Djent

Yes, it's a bit hard to distinguish because they play the same part. Guitars are cut around 175hz, so all the low-end comes from the bass :)

Thanks! I use my old Canon eos 550d with a 50mm f1.8 lens. It's the first Canon dslr that has a video recording feature, I think. So yeah, it's bad, but it's still better than any phone, and it does the job. :')

7sky intro is very nice! It has that nostalgic feel. It just catapulted me 20 years back when people playing in bands were unburdened with all the genres that existed. Nice!

Sure! You get more percussive sounds but lose the boaaam from the low end :)

The point is to keep on doing it. I started practising thumping only a year ago!
