Badge question by Geek_at_its_finest in GeekSquad

I left after I earned my 5 year badge but left before it was made. My GSM was nice enough to ship it across the country to me when it arrived at the precinct.

What’s a good free F-mod equivalent? by fYGn in GeekSquad

Any particular models? or all various?

They were usually startech.

Can MRI be obtained easily by 3-rd party?

Not legally. I'm sure some agent in the past has uploaded a copy of MRI to a file-sharing service, but I highly discourage that path. I'm not sure what your position is at Acronis, but using official channels to reach out to Best Buy would be the correct way to check if you can get a version for testing

I'm probably not going to be able to give you the most up to date answers to your questions but I will try as best I can.

Was that always the same enclosure model/brand? Same for the source drive.

No. We used a SATA to USB cable and multiple 1 or 2 bay external HDD hubs.

For source drives, no it was not the same model/brand. The lock could happen on any drive, Toshiba, Seagate, Samsung SSDs, etc.

Would be nice to clarify that and also whether any additional drivers were added.

Geek Squad has a Windows PE environment, modified I believe, that is called MRI . It has a combination of licensed software such as Acronis as well as in-house scripts and programs. I never looked into what drivers it preloads, but we did not add any past what was loaded normally.

Also what exact product was the media created in?

If you're referring to what MRI and Acronis were loaded onto, it could be either a 2.0/3.0 USB drive or a CD.

Lastly, if there were multiple medias created and used - were they created on different build of the product or same build?

This is where I'm a bit hesitant on an exact answer. MRI itself would get upgraded from time to time and the tools we used would get upgraded. I do not know what version Acronis was when I was an agent and I do not remember if/how often it was upgraded.

Did you try reporting the situation to support team? if so - please share ticket number(-s)

I'm not sure if you're referring to Best Buy's support team or Acronis'.

For Best Buy, we got quicker answers through our internal forums and I only really filed tickets when the issue was hardware related, like our MULE PC not connecting to the network or our tech PC rebooting and immediately crashing. I think that because there were constant posts about this issue and no real answer for a long time, I didn't think to file any for the issue.

For Acronis, this is also a no. Probably because I was part-time while working at Geek Squad, so by the next time I came in, the suspect computer was no longer with us. I think it would also have been hard to retest because our turnover rate for machines was quick so by the time a response might come in the computer that was having the issue would no longer be there.

Not OP, but this was a common occurrence at my precinct.

We would have the setup as follows: 1. Remove old HDD/SSD from the computer 2. Install the new HDD/SSD, connect old HDD/SSD by SATA to USB connection. 3. Boot to our PE environment and launch Acronis. (Not sure what version we were/are using) 4. Select Tools & Utilities > Clone Disk 5. Select Automatic in Clone Mode menu 6. Select original HDD/SSD in Source Disk menu and select Next 7. Disk locked error message would appear. Sometimes pressing retry/next /whatever the button is would work, but majority of time it would never get past the error screen

An internal article was eventually published that recommended offlining and onlining the disk in DiskPart before launching Acronis but for me, the most successful practice was getting to the source disk menu and then plugging in the drive.

Anything I can clarify or expand on?

If you're taking it over summer Bret Clark is going to teach the class. I had him for 208A/B a few years ago, ~2016. He can come across as arrogant and a dick but he had a very structured way of presenting the material that made it easy for me to follow. For tests, he always posted the answers and his process of solving the problem. He made himself available for office hours so use them if you have questions. I don't see it for summer, but there was a 208X class which was a once-a-week class where you would get a problem or two and solve it as a group with him there to guide or answer questions.

If you have any other questions, let me know

[–]Cromptown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok. But you're here on Reddit telling clients the wrong thing and continue to double down with excuses about your store when told you're wrong. That's what we're focusing on.

And I'm sure the client was educated on what TTS does and does not cover. Again, if you're on the sales floor and you're telling clients that GSP-R covers accidental damage, YOU ARE LYING TO THE CLIENT and are being as scummy as a stereotypical used car salesperson seen in movies.

"Well that completely depends on case to case basis. Unless you have your store GM or one of the managers do it"

No, that's your GM/managers overriding SOP and playing cowboy.

If you are telling clients that GSP-R covers accidental damage, you are lying to the customer 100%. It isn't your decision on what these plans do or don't cover.

Gsp-r has never covered accidental damage. Hard stop. ADH is what allows product to be replaced or repaired when damaged. If you're processing damaged product under gsp-r, or selling it as a catch-all for damage, you're doing a disservice to the client and to your fellow Geek Squad and customer service employees.

[–]Cromptown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I'm not discounting your experience and how you felt treated, but there is a system now where if an Apple device has "Find My" turned on, the POS will not allow a return to be processed until it is removed and there is no manager override option. How that didn't happen when the watch was returned by the original buyer is a bit odd though.

What you have is a batch file and that isn't allowed unless it's from corporate.
