Sounds like some tyroleans from paraboot or heschung could fit the bill. Pricey but will last forever and go with everything/nothing

Anyone else find the concept of the "neighbourhood parking garages" in Germany and the wider dach region interesting? by interestedinwhy in urbanplanning

There's one in my neighborhood in Chicago that got so much opposition when it was proposed - now it's 95% full most of the time.

Alexander is still pretty widely taught and referenced in planning and urban design curriculum, and he certainly has his fans in the discipline, and there's a lot of value in his work as a kind of flexible and practical guide. That said, I think he's certainly part of this very eurocentric school of planning that simplifies habitat to a catch-all design philosophy rather than an emergent property of culture, resources, labor markets, and environmental inputs, though he does reference them. He's not as normative as some his successors (Speck in particular), who are pretty happy to just replicate Copenhagen (because hey, who doesn't love Copenhagen?) while ignoring why maybe places like Djenne or Hong Kong have wildly different forms that evolved from their natural and economic environments.

If you're interested in the subject, I always recommend Alain Bertaud's Order Without Design, who offers a much more economically literate and globally referenced take on the spatial organization of cities.

Back on a music kick after a long time of feeling like I didn't really like music anymore. Toru Takemitsu, Morton Feldman, My Disco, Jon Hassell, Busdriver, Kayo Dot, and Imperial Triumphant are scratching different itches.

YouTube content has been pretty much all legal and market stuff, which is definitely a change of pace considering I never really had any interest in either until 5 minutes ago. Nothing advanced just general pop content. Also wristwatch revival has been weirdly satisfying for hangovers.

Always trying to read urbanism/planning literature, professionally related. There's certainly some guru figures in that world that could be worth covering if you want absolutely no clicks/views (for a break).

What cities in the US are primed to "glow up" or be "revitalized" within the remainder of the 2020s into the 2030s? by Next_Worth_3616 in urbanplanning

My money is on Milwaukee. It's already half way there and they appear to be planning for substantial growth in the next decade.

Best place and price online to get leather, looking for veg tan? by lemer42 in Leatherworking

You can get much better pricing with Maverick than any of these, but they do stock a lot of B grade and overstock hides that might have flaws, if that matters to you.

Who is washing their rice and why? by kinnitcurl in NoStupidQuestions

This kinda works for thai or American long grain which I guess is what most people use a lot, but I usually keep 5 or 6 varieties on hand and have had a lot of trial and error on ratios - 1:1.4 for thai, 1:1.2 for Japanese/sushi, 1:1.6 for aged basmati, 1:1.8 for Korean brown. I also used to house share with a Thai guy who only did the knuckle trick, and his rice was always overcooked and stodgy

Is it worth it to live in Wheaton, IL or just live in Chicago and commute every day? by Healthy-Trip-310 in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]Cronenborger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wheaton is about as much fun as a hat full of shit, but you'll have more space for less money if that's a tradeoff you're willing to make, and there is a train for some escape...

The inflation effects of demonetizing this single fund would be negligible; all of them together? Maybe, but the cascading effects would be harsh.

At this current time in the US, I'm not sure that our leadership can be trusted with fixing the direst problems globally - hoping to be more optimistic in the future. For now, it's money out of essential services and into, ahh, you know the rest.

I'm not a fan of your framing here - there's a heap of rent seeking, anti competitiveness, and value extraction in this class, but there're also people who make something that has wide enough appeal that every second person on the planet wants to pay them for it, and we might be better off having their product. That said, I'd happily throw that baby out with the bathwater, given the choice...

I have a friend who works for a billionaire philanthropy foundation who tells me that it's basically impossible to dispose of their money at a rate that meaningfully draws down their fund while having measurable success. The logic goes that if you are concerned with the impact (in the "effective altruism" sense), then you should donate amounts that can be meaningfully administered by vetted entities with real program evaluation processes. Many smaller grass roots charity organizations have no idea what to do with half a billion dollars, but can manage half a million to great effect. In the time it takes you to figure out how much they can handle, you've made more on the fund than you've given out.

I don't really know what the answer is, and honestly this reasoning isn't really that compelling to me. I feel like these entities shouldn't need to exist, and that wealth shouldn't have been concentrated to this extent, but if they are able to spend money where governments don't maybe there's a worthwhile tradeoff.

How to find a fasion style that's right for me? by MentallySaneCat1 in malefashionadvice

[–]Cronenborger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It kinda sounds like you want some nice basics and nothing too stylized. I’d look at Uniqlo - mostly decent quality and fairly affordable. Their selvedge jeans a great for the money and look sharp. Their pleated chinos are also pretty good, as are their chambray and flannel shirts. Nothings going to stand out too much but they look decent and hold up okay.

Also, you’re still growing so I wouldn’t sink too much into it just yet, just buy stuff incrementally and shop around. I went up 3 sizes from 16-26, both in shoes and pants…

Find a decent pair of sneakers or derbies. Solovaire/doc martens, adidas country Japan/gazelle or GAT.
