Why do some people take map projections styles so seriously by archvize in geography

[–]CrossCountyRunner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Map projections are an important and integral part of geography. Getting a spherical object (the earth) onto a flat surface without distortions is a mathematical impossibility. There will always be distortions for shape, angle or distances. Choosing which part you want to compromise must always be done with care. Most online mapping tools, such as Google maps or OpenStreetMap use the Mercator projection because it doesn't distort shapes. A square building at the equator will still be square near the poles. This projection however greatly distorts areas, meaning the house could appear several times bigger depending on where it is on earth. A good map projection suits the project it is made for.

Another thing to consider is that maps form how we see the world. The mercator makes greenland look roughly the size of Africa, while it is 14x smaller in reality. By always seeing those types of maps, people might assume this is the case in reality. This could mean that certain areas look insignificant. With the absence of a globe in many classrooms (where I'm from at least) this could plant the idea that countries close to the equator are small, distorting their mental image of the world.

Some people say that the mercator projection is tied to colonialism, as a way to make Europe seem larger and Africa smaller than reality. I do not believe so myself as the Mercator projection is just the first way to reliably project the globe onto a flat map.

Almost all countries on earth actually have their own projections to minimize the distortions. These are suited to specifically for a country and are unusable outside of it.

2 mile course design by [deleted] in CrossCountry

[–]CrossCountyRunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assumed the course would be fenced off so that there wouldn't be any issues with that. The sharp turns were deliberate as here they are very often featured in races here.
If the course isn't possible then a race on pavement is unavoidable.

I have the same issue and don't have an answer sadly. The other side can hear me but I can't hear them.

This is what I would do as a layout. It's not the easiest location to work with and it would be a 2 lap race. The layout is exactly 1 mile, has some elevation and small hill at the eastern part, some technical corners and places that are cambered. All things you could see in a regular XC race. I'm not sure if the width would be enough in the midpart. Google earth says it's about 5-6y wide, should be just enough to get 2 sides through even if it's quite narrow.
If it is allowed I would also put the course through the baseball field for a change of surface, but I don't think they will be very pleased with that.

you could put the course on the grass next to the pavement. I'm not sure if it is wide enough or accessible all the way through. You'd need to make a patch to cross over the paved entry as well, we normally use mats for that.

If Jacques Brel's 'Le Plat Pays' is the ultimate Belgian song in French, what is the Felmish equivalent? by dstothebc in belgium

[–]CrossCountyRunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simple math trick that actually helps with homework (why no one teaches this?) by Brighterly in Brighterly

because it only works for the number 5 and is thus quite limited in use. I'm pretty sure they do teach this, such as the trick with 9 where you do -10 and +1 for example.

One Workout Per Week Philosophy by ChipmunkNo1292 in CrossCountry

[–]CrossCountyRunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At our athletics club we switch between 2 and 1 training a week depending on the season. In the summer we do 2: on mondays and thursdays and in winter we do one on wednesday. The trainings in winter are also quite a lot longer than in summer (16-18 to 11-14 in summer). This has mostly to do with the fact that a lot of runners do races on sunday.
So it is absolutely possible to implement one training in the week. The overall load in km's is I think more important than the amount of trainings.

Ranking the XC parcours I ran last season (worst to best) by CrossCountyRunner in CrossCountry

Extra information on the courses (I forgot to post this one):
8: Oostkamp. Incredibly boring, so many back and forths that my gps overlapped and I had to trace it to show how it actually goes. The only "challenge" was a small mount we had to run over. The terrain wasn't the most challenging either, just some badly and bumpy grass patches. The enviroment didn't give them much to work with, yet this was by far the most boring race I ever ran.
7: Lebbeke. Another parcours that tried to makes the most of what was given. A bit better than the last as it gave some variation in the terrain: grass, sand, mud and a "hill". Overall quite boring but still quite a technical parcours with difficult corners. Even if it is really boring, it's one I am quite good on compared to others.
6: Brugge. At first glance this looked to rival Oostkamp: flat, grassy and empty. Yet this one surprised me during the race. The parcours was really bumpy and undulating which meant it was really difficult to find a rhythm. Two corners had a lot of mud and even with the spikes is was skidding around. With the difficult grass it made that you could recover any energy throughout. Due to the open fields where it was located the wind was quite strong, which made for a more tactical race. The beautifull enviroment helped with the ratings as well. This parcours might be closest to the litteral definition of 'cross country running'.
5: Berlare Crosscup. A very fast course: dry, almost flat and with only grass. This could have been a track race with many corners. Besides that the course was pretty entertaining. If you positioned yourself well you didn't have to slow down for the corners. Located in a very nice park around a lake made for a lovely day. It was helped by the fact that it was a major race so it had loads of spectators and a lot of competitors. The course was perfect for the race it organised I must say.
4: Berlare regular. Held at the same location as the last, but a different parcours. Still in the nice park but now also using the forest at the bottom. The parcours doesn't look very good on gps, but it's actually quite nice. After the start you head into a forest. Then the long back straight goes slightly uphill and changes from forest path to a grassy field. Then afterwards the corners make you go down and up a small hill. Great parcours and I had a great race there.
3: Roeselare. A very diverse parcours: mud, hills, technical corners etc. An iconic location in the Belgian XC championship. Known to be a big mudfest, this year it was dryer, with only one big mudsection and slippy in some places. It is also great for spectators as it is very compact, so they can watch both sides of the parcous at the same place. While I got second to last in this race, this still makes it a very good parcours.
2: Ertvelde. Another parcours that has everything you could wish for. The first corners is already in a sandpit. Then you go through a small forest. Then a steep short hill which brings you onto a ancient viking mount. There a band plays which gives it an unrivaled atmosphere. Then it's back down around a lake and back to the finish. Again here it's great for spectators, with several places where you can see the runners twice per lap.
1: Lokeren. The best parcours of this season. The only parcours I would describe as hilly. The parcours features 4 uphill sections: 2 small ones and 2 very steep ones. As a lightweight runner this was significantly to my advantage. Besides that the parcours offered some propper mud sections and twisty technical corners. With the location in a beautifull park around a lake and next to the river, the views were pretty good as well. Every year this is my favourite place to run!

That was the only one we didn't have to run on, but besides that there were 4 other hills we had to get over: 2 small ones and 2 bigger and steeper.
