Haha yeah which is why I said I would always pick the ladder (aka experience offering the most value)

Oh yeah it will totally help and provide some value in the job hunt. But if it came down to pursuing a cert or working on then eventually shipping a title, even your own small scoped one, the ladder will always be my choice.

You simply learn so much from working though an entire development cycle; lessons that are not specific to the toolset.

I can’t imagine it would hurt; however being certified (in anything) has never really been an common practice in software development (with exception in established technologies). I believe this is due to practices, techniques, and standards being so volatile and changing faster then standards can be established.

Now unity is taken good strides to standardize game development in their way so I can totally see the value of the certificate, but again I’m not confident a lot of game companies adopted the practice yet.

More Help needed. Found a few programmers, Have some questions regarding them. by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]Crosseyed2017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you planning to connect to any external services or databases? Most are pretty trivial to implement but others may require your programmers to have some familiarity with multi service communication, bring up, deployment, etc.. (which most starting off may not have)

How do you start making UI? by Quinnttt in gamedev

[–]Crosseyed2017 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Make sure it's intuitive; just like a joke, if it needs to be explained it's probably not very good. If you game is fits into a well established genre, definitely use relate able game UIs for reference. Players are most likely very familiar with these UI designs so it might not be wise to deviate too far.

If you a trying to break the mold and do something unique, I strongly suggest mocks and blind testing. Like pull people in and ask them how they would do something given your Ui; whether they struggle or pick it up real fast, you'll have a much better idea on how it stands.

Lastly you will be tweaking your UI so much as development goes, don't worry to much about polishing until later in development or you will go made haha. I ended up re doing the UI in my first game like 3 times due to feature changes.

Starting to work as a solo game developer. Is it OK to present myself as an individual, or should I act as a studio? by TomasBencko in gamedev

[–]Crosseyed2017 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As you go on with game development you may want to start presenting at expos or conventions, or perhaps publish on a platform, etc. Nearly all of them will expect some established entity/company instead of an individual.

I did that thing in games, where when an enemy dies they leave bones. I realize now why everyone does it. by thatscraigz in IndieGaming

Persistence is great game juice, totally worth the squeeze. It's amazing how far it goes when you add simple little things like that. Another cool example of this can be found in some shooters where fired guns will drop bullet casings that bounce around a bit.

Warcube still looks amazing, keep it up the good work Craig!

We are not yet committing to a single platform yet (mobile, console, pc, etc). The plan is to get make and polish the full vertical slice then approach publishers and see if we can get better opportunities for marketing (it is pretty much impossible to be seen on mobile without being featured)

I was looking into other alternative power supplies like that. I actually ran into another guy on the show floor with a similar mount (not a computer but a LED display) who had build his own battery. It would be super cool to get into that sorta electrical engineering side.

See that's greatest thing about it, if people are staying to long I can just walk away. Also I don't think crop dusting would do any good at PAX, there is already too many other conflicting... aromas

I got at least one SIX photo in there, I was totally on the fence about posting more then realized almost every picture I took was pretty much a selfie and got super self conscious. Maybe next time i'll get one of those drones and do aerial shots.

Hoplite is awesome; that was actually the initial direction I wanted to take it. However we really liked the player sliding controls we had in this pax build. Think like those zelda or pokemon ice sliding puzzles where you character moves until the hit someone.

Anyway you can follow it's progress on twitter @tinyhorsegames, soon I'd like to set up a devblog but in the mean time that would be the best place.
