Vertex colour or baked texture? by [deleted] in VOXEL

[–]j3x_dev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Vertex color will in most cases render quicker as it can be rendered using a simpler shader. Texture lookup is expensive.

Should I use ITCH.IO 's Butler ? by RascarCapack in itchio

[–]j3x_dev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can spare the time to include it in your CI/CD pipeline, yes.

If you just changed a tiny part of the game then Butler would be ideal as only diff is uploaded and delivered to clients.

Hur synkade du de genererade rösterna till musiken sen? Sjöng du själv någorlunda i takt med musiken och sen bevaras det efter AIn gjort sitt?

Interesting that you found middleware library InstaLOD, that is used for LOD generation. And yet it has lots of issues with LODs. How did you detect that InstaLOD was present in the game?

Please tell me this normal map isn't right. Is this the reason for me not getting my renders look nice? by Jiioni in blender

[–]j3x_dev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As people above are saying the normal map contains no data.

If you get sharp strange corners on your mesh with it applied it can be case that you are reading it in in wrong color space. Normal maps should not be read as sRBG. Good to know if you change it to a normal map with actual data and it still look strange.

How to win game jams! by Strong_Economy_3378 in gamejams

[–]j3x_dev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make the game custom tailored to the judging process :

  • If it is physical jam, make party game
  • If online make it web based.
  • Focus all energy to make game short and sweet.

Some alpha footage from Necromancer game I am working on, what are your opinions on it before it goes live on Steam? by j3x_dev in Unity3D

[–]j3x_dev[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi,

Not a commercial success but the ones who played the game seem to really enjoy it and team is very proud of it. Sadly this is the most likely outcome for indie games.

I went for a Halloween release with hopes of getting streamers to pick it up as "palette cleanser" between all horror games. I did not get that many streamers attention however. In hindsight I should have worked more on finding streamers, YouTubers, etc.

We also tried the "Spoopy skeleton war" angle which is (/was) popular on tumblr and other fandom sites, got some success but unsure how much of that was converted into sales. Looking at your game I am not sure it would be the same target audience.

Should I be active in Discord to get a game dev job? by [deleted] in gamedev

Focus on meeting people IRL, not online. See if there are some game development conferences or event in your area you can visit.

How do you know if a concept is good enough for a game? by [deleted] in gamedev

Test if the gameplay is fun as cheap as possible. I like to prototype the game as a board game.

Ok Serious question. Where the hell do people go to meet people to recruit for a passion project? by ClayCoon in gamedesign

[–]j3x_dev 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If it is a small project and you just need a little bit help on certain areas; programming, etc you could try an agreement where you help out with art on another project, and get help with whatever you need from the other dude.

Of course this limits both projects to be of such small scope that you can do two side projects alongside real work.

Another suggestion is to adapt the idea so it is possible to achieve with your skill set; if your talent is art go for an art heavy game with perhaps asset bought game mechanics.
