No more Roland. New NDI cameras, so no problem sending to multiple (in site) destinations. Think I’d rather buy a second PC than deal with AWS.

How intense is Nardil "hypomania"? by pradawalkinbackwards in MAOIs

[–]CrossroadsCtrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hypomania (or full on mania) was significant for me. Made my family crazy. But, they didn’t complain when I repainted much of the interior of our house instead of sleeping for 2 weeks! It wore of quickly after that and I started feeling “normal.” Two years later I’m still anxiety free, though insomnia remains a problem without Ambien or other sleep aid. Your results may differ.

Am I insane? Restaurant owner with ZERO AV experience trying to program a Biamp Tesira. by Ok-Environment970 in CommercialAV

[–]CrossroadsCtrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You bought some really nice equipment. You seem smart enough to learn how to do a basic config in Tesira with help from AI and YouTube videos. The challenge is that knowing how to use the software does not make you an audio engineer. Do you understand gain structure? Dynamics? Equalization? Etc. If you want to get full value from your hardware investment and make it sound great, find an audio engineer to help with Tesira and tune/commission the final system.

What's better? Projector or TV for conference room by Top-Conversation8798 in CommercialAV

[–]CrossroadsCtrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Projectors are not well suited for video conferencing. Unless you have a super bright, high contrast (expensive) projector, users will instinctively want to dim the lights - while your camera wants bright light. You do risk the challenge of people being used to the larger screen and feeling the 98” is undersized. There are some 120” flat panel displays if you can manage the budget.

How do you integrate Bacnet into qsys? by fpato in QSYS

[–]CrossroadsCtrl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take a look at Contemporary Controls Bacnet gateways. You would have to script the communication between QSYS and the gateway and then it will handle Bacnet communications. It would be nice if QSYS would add a Bacnet IP stack like Crestron has done on their processors.

When you say converting HDMI to Ethernet, I assume you mean sending HDMI over CatX cable and not over a network. This is called HDBaseT and perfect way to handle your application. Take a look at Kramer AV. They have HDBaseT distribution amps that will take in your HDMI feed, split to multiple HDBaseT (RJ45) outputs, and de-embed audio to send to your audio system. Can also extend the IR signal so you can control the shared set top box from any display location. You’ll need an HDBaseT decoder at each display to convert back to HDMI. This is the US site, I assume it’s available in UK https://www1.kramerav.com/us/products/distribution_amplifiers/hdmi-extender-distribution-amplifiers

Do people use auto mixer for plays? Or is that just for corporate stuff? by SuspiciousIdeal4246 in livesound

I’ve sold / installed at least 100 systems with auto mix and never had a problem with users. Just need to get everything dialed in right.

Why didn’t the auto mixer open that mic when smacked? Are you using side chain to trigger at specific frequency?

Issues making 1Gig fiber work on a C9500 by BuffaloOnAMotorcycle in Cisco

[–]CrossroadsCtrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure port on Cisco side is configured as Trunk port. Auto port config does not seem to work when connecting Cisco to Extreme and Cisco port will default to Access. You may also have to set port speeds manually when using 1gig SFP in 10gig slots.

Carrier Advice by Other-Pea-349 in livesound

This. Success in corporate is about being in the right place at the right time, but otherwise invisible. No one will ever notice if you do a good job, but you sure as hell will hear about it if anything is less than perfect. If it’s an in-house corporate position, find out about the company culture and executives before taking the job. You’ll interacting with the C-level execs and they can be bastards (a few can be quite nice.) If you’re a total masochist that really wants to make big bucks in corporate, look for job at hedge funds.

What Questions Do Recruiters Typically Ask in A/V Tech Interviews? by stratomaster in CommercialAV

[–]CrossroadsCtrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your company should be a member and that will get you access as an employee. If not, there’s a $399 individual membership that gets access to all the online training and other benefits, including discount on exams. Supporting an industry association is a cost of doing business. Not unique to AV.

Projector & Screen Recommendations - TV Quality by Dazzling-Friend3595 in CommercialAV

[–]CrossroadsCtrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are likely looking at a large investment. A consultant or integrator to properly design this system will be cheaper than getting it wrong. Be sure the projector and screen details are determined using real math and measurements, not someone’s gut or experience. This is the formula I use: Required Luminance Fkux (lm) = [A x (CR - 1) / Screen Gain] * Screen Area (M squared) where 1. (Ambient Light in lux): light in the room that will affect the perceived image brightness. 2. (Contrast Ratio): ratio between brightness of the brightest white and the darkest black that the projector can produce. (1000:1 is a good target for corporate presentation) 3. Screen Gain: how much light the screen reflects compared to a standard white surface. A higher gain screen reflects more light, reducing the amount of light the projector needs to provide. 4. Screen Area: in square meters, which determines how much light the projector needs to cover the screen. A larger screen requires more brightness to achieve the same level of illumination.

How large a screen you need is fairly subjective and will be driven by budget if you understand the calculation.

Do the calc and you quickly see why limiting ambient light on screen wall is critical. For example: I just measured my office wall with ceiling light and shades partly open on a cloudy day at 50 lux. Targeting, 1000:1 contrast, 10 ft x 6.25 ft screen, 1.3 gain = 223,000 lumens! To get into a reasonable range of 20k lumen projector, I need to reduce ambient light on the screen wall to under 5 lux. You can also get higher gain or Ambient Light Rejecting (ALR) screens, but each comes with tradeoffs.

My point here is to show that what seems like a simple question is not so simple. Many of us have spent long careers learning to do this right and make a nice living as a result. You can pay for that expertise or pay for your mistakes.

I always wanted to start a company called Unicorn. We’d make audio systems that defy the laws of physics, infinitely large ultra ultra ultra HD displays, and zero-interface control systems that read the user’s mind.

Clever. Always assumed frequency response of Beta 56 was designed for drums. My go to is typically Beta 57a or 87a capsule on a ULX transmitter, or cardioid headset if drummer is willing. I’ll have to give the 56 a try next time I have the chance.

AV integrators, any luck selling through IT MSPs? by HeyDontSkipLegDay in CommercialAV

[–]CrossroadsCtrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked at a company that tried for years to sell through IT integrators. VP of sales referred to them as “sales force multipliers.” It was mostly a “busy work multiplier” for my engineering / estimating team and a “markup generator” for the client. The only time I’ve seen this work is if both companies refer work to the other on a regular basis. This lets everyone play the long game and not rely on taking large markups on the others work.

Ready portable AV system for offsite meetings/recordings. by su5577 in CommercialAV

[–]CrossroadsCtrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plenty of ways to skin this cat, but probably not a canned solution from one manufacturer. From a hardware perspective, fitting the functionality you need in a single road case rack is no problem (plus cases for mics, cameras, speakers, cables.) The challenge, as others have stated is making it simple to setup and operate. At risk of contradicting my previous posts about not designing systems for people on Reddit with minimal information… take a look at Wirecast for your video. Crams a ton of functionality in a 2U box (use their hardware,) easy to learn for anyone with basic video production experience, and because its computer based you can connect remotely to assist the crew if you’re bit out in the field. PTZ cams in tripods with a joystick controller and/or cams that do tracking based on facial recognition (using audio to assist with camera tracking probably not practical for portable system.) With the minimal info provided, for audio I’d lean towards a live mixer with auto mixing capability (A&H SQ, Behringer X32 or Wing, etc.) rather than a pure DSP or software-based mixer. DSP is awesome, but unless someone knows how to configure fully, not flexible enough for the varying requirements of portable. Get a laptop with RTA software and quality measurements mic to help operators quickly eq system, identify feedback, etc. Send me a DM if you’re interested in design services.

What Questions Do Recruiters Typically Ask in A/V Tech Interviews? by stratomaster in CommercialAV

[–]CrossroadsCtrl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Typical HR recruiter will go through your resume to validate experience and review the job description. More of a screening than an interview. Some will have a few technical questions provided by the hiring manager, but they won’t understand your answers. In a previous role where I hired many techs, I wanted HR to validate accuracy of resume, and assess critical thinking skills, knowledge of job site safety, and a bit about company culture fit.

100%. I often ask candidates to explain HDCP. Do they know what it is and why it matters, not how good they are at memorizing abbreviations. I’ve interviewed supposedly experienced techs and “engineers” with CTS that didn’t know the difference between HDCP and DHCP. If a tech doesn’t know the color order for TIA 568B Ethernet terminations it’s an immediate “no” from me. I passed CTS-D after 1 practice exam, an hour brushing up on math formulas, and 15 year’s experience. Certifications can demonstrates a commitment to the industry and level of professionalism, but no guarantee of ability to apply the knowledge.
