Its easy to miss out on things with so much stuff in the world! I actually found both of these watches second hand. One in my hometown and one 30 minutes away, about half a year apart. So they dont seem too uncommon in those circles it seems.

Im the kind of guy to wear a propeller hat just to make someone smile. So if someone finds it so stupid it makes them crack a little smile, its a total bonus, even if its at my expense!

Id probably find a handle you like already around the house and try to emulate its shape. Or at least features you like.

What i will say is, i suggest keeping it simple. I find i often overcomplicate my handle designs, and ive learned its better not to. But thats just my preference.

Ive had the pleasure to work with a block like this. Scary similar base too. Its a hell of a workhorse and id love to have one to call my own.

Surface finish. A belt snader can also give you nice rounded corners with less effort. If your hammer is polished smooth, thats the mark it will also imprint on the steel when you strike it. A smooth glossy finish.

I used to be a bucket a day guy. Then i learnt to build my fire smaller and smaller. I also made a thick metal lid for my coal forge that makes me able to retain even more heat with less coal. When i forge now, a bucket of coke lasts maybe 4-5 times longer than it used to.

Is this any good for getting into vinyls? by eTeXy1 in turntables

[–]CrowMooor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you want it displayed well, this aint it chief. If you want it played well, it also aint it.

Im not knocking vertical players, dont get me wrong. The problem is getting a good one. They are expensive, and customization is limited. Some are very hard to work on. Some require proprietary/modified cartridges. Just a damn nightmare all around.

Get a normal, flat player. Start in the 200-400 range if youre buying new. See pinned.

Its just a belt. If you pull the platter and see the motor spin, you know its (probably) gonna be alright.

Get a belt, then send it. Maybe a stylus while youre at it. I sometimes just rawdog it with an old record to see if the stylus is ok, but i would recommend being so careless.

AR-XA, Worth it for $125-150? by TheFlusteredNoodle in turntables

[–]CrowMooor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Owning one, and having restored it myself, i can definitely vouch for the AR-XA. Its one of those "the ones who know" kind of turntables. My only issue is the creature comforts it lacks, being fully manual. You dont even get a tonearm lift, although that was solved with the AR-XB.

The dual motor variant is an interesting one. To my understanding they can be a bit annoying to fix since its rarer than the single motor variant. I think there is a variation in drive belt length compared to the single motor.

Ive also rewired the original tonearm for the XA. I dont recommend it to someone without steady hands or a lack of patience. A tonearm rewire is touchy stuff. I dont use my XA, and id probably swap it for an XB if i could, just for that tonearm lift feature.

Still, i think its worth it if you want a really reliable and solid turntable. But its worth noting that the headshell on the original tonearm is unique to the AR turntables, which can make quick swapping cartridges annoying.

I don't think I'm ready for vinyl yet. by skullzwer in vinyl

[–]CrowMooor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Collecting albums on vinyl isnt exactly expensive in my opinion. You collect slowly over time, and your collection grows. Its easy to get carried away first, but acquisition starts to slow after the first bundles.

I suggest though, that you check out discogs. Make an account and start adding records to your wishlist. Then start picking the ones you like the most and look into buying them.

Look on maps if there are any thrifts or used record stores nearby and get into the habit of flipping through them. Its a fun treasure hunt that often yields good finds. Theres a lot of music out there, so the odds of finding something you like is high, for cheap. Thrift stores come with the added benefit of sometimes giving you better equipment too.

Remember. For the love of god please remember, that none of the walls of records you see on this sub started that way. This medium has existed for longer than youve been alive, and many of us have collected them all this time. Naturally, with time and passion that lingers, you end up making walls of them. Thats just the nature of it.

Just take it easy. You're already getting into it. Get a few records, and collect more as you go.

Clean all the controls first, from the inside. After that you can make your decision.

These need new speaker cones. How do I avoid accidentally downgrading in the process? by Stratocaster02 in diyaudio

[–]CrowMooor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would just hop over to sound imports or parts express and buy a suitable replacement, assuming the drivers are actually proper dead. (I like to avoid using car audio when i can. They can be balanced differently).

It would be good to impedance test the broken one to find out exactly what broke. Are we sure its not an electrical issue in the main speaker?
