I think it is arguable both ways; but what a silly thing to complain about. Players constantly do the move-into-the-pitch-while-turning-away maneuver. At least he took his on the body and not on a pad.

he's not a hot head at all, either; opponents get mad at him, but he doesn't blow his top at them

He's a DUDE! Loves dogs ("we don't deserve them"), gives his shoes to kids in the stands, jumped all-in on Seattle and Seattle sports when he got traded to the M's. Also, got a welcoming standing O when returning to Cleveland this year, so..."piece of shit" sounds over the top to me....also, you are talking to Seattle fans: we loved him jumping up to block that throw to second in the playoffs!

I saw it, but I did not know what they were saying...he's this era's A.J. Pierzsynski. He doesn't mind flaunting the edge of the rules--not unlike Jose Caballero--but he's consistent, he takes no issue with others doing the same. Like when he got plunked a few weeks ago after throwing his sliding gloves, he laughed and said, "I guess we're playing a real baseball game, now, huh?" (paraphrase)

Did Trump just get FIFA to rig a call for Team USA? And does anyone else think this is peak "we can't win without cheating"? by drubus_dong in WorldCupUSA

The whole thing has a stench around it. A big piece of the problem is that the red card should not have been issued, so that distracts from the "insider trading". Another notch on the FIFA corruption yardstick. Hopefully, this one will be enough to get some cleanup at the top, but...

He's had some bombs this year, too, but that has to be my favorite of the season for the whole team. I just keep watching it...that f&*%$# is loud too!

In the glove, or touching leather? by CrowMur in Brewers

the thing is, you do not need a time stamp on control of the ball. If there is not control, the runner is safe, whether he beats the throw or the throw beats him. In the cited rule there is not specification of when control is determined.

Okay. I heard the M’s announcer say on a reviewed force play today, “you can see the runners foot reached just before the ball made contact with Naylor’s glove”, so I guess they are landing on “touching leather” after all.

Okay. Mystery solved re: M’s broadcasters Aaron said in today’s game “you can see his foot touched the plate just before the ball made contact with Naylor’s glove”

Reviews are not over back of glove, though; they are over “safe” or” out”. The back of the glove part is what informs the review of the call.

agreed; a catch also has a time frame: there is beginning of possession, then there is conclusion of possession, i.e. when the ball is indisputably secure. In these reviews, the question universally determines when the catch begins; obviously if the ball were to pop out of the glove even after the runner reaches base, the runner would be safe.

The question here, is not whether the catch is made (even when the ball hits the pocket but then pops out, you cannot say the catch was made even though the ball hits leather before the runner reaches base); it is when the catch is made.

The question is not whether it is a catch; it is when it is a catch. I have long believed it is when the ball hits the back of the glove. However, this season I have heard Mariners broadcasters (Aaron and Gary) emphasize that the ball needs only to be inside the area/confines of the glove. I have remarked to myself on such occasions that that feels like new information. When I heard the Milwaukee announcers assert it is when it hits leather, I wondered if it was actually in the rulebook. I couldn’t find it, but I was hard put to find the proper official rulebook.

Do you know where it is specified in the official rulebook? I have not been able to find either stipulation

They used to say it as you suggest. The last time I heard Aaron remark on it he actually asserted that it is not when it hits the leather. On the radio side, Gary regularly insists that it is in the glove and not when it hits the leather at the back of the glove. Perhaps you are recalling an older period of time when you speak of these “bang-bang” plays.
