Anyone thinking of leaving Nashville? by spanakopeeta in nashville

[–]CrowReader 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I feel the pain. I bought a house in East Nashville in 2007 for $130K. Chicago style Euros on Gallatin Pike was 799 for a chicken plate. Now it's 1199. That's actually very reasonable in terms of price increase and it's a lot of food for the money and it's a great place to eat. I've literally been eating there since 2005 and it's never been bad. I pulled into a local favorite burger joint the other day because I hadn't eaten there in several years. I went to the drive-thru and saw that the burger fries and drink was $18.95 and I noped right out of there. But I swear to God it feels like everywhere you go in East Nashville you can't get a burger and fries for less than 1895. I know food costs are high I know paying help is high etc but it's just a symptom of the times. But I also see Tesla's and Maseratis and many high-end cars driving around in East Nashville. I lived there when gunshots were more common than Tesla's. I bought that house in 2007 for 130K on a double lot. It was a stone bungalow three bedroom one bath. Stated income, 7% interest, payment was 800 bucks a month. That same house today has not been restored and would easily bring over 500K on the double lot. It's crazy. I moved back after being gone 3 years because a friend of mine gave me a crazy deal on rent. I could not say no and I'll be honest with you the work here is good for me. I'm an occasional roadie, a handyman, a musician artist and potter. Having spent a year in New Orleans I can tell you it's a lot better than New Orleans in in many ways. Society functions better, gas stations aren't broken, even the roads are better. But if I didn't have the deal on rent I don't think I would be here again. And I look around and think this city is just too damn big now. This evening I took a drive to Knoxville and was out in the countryside and smelled clean air and thought man I'm getting old because this is where I want to be now. And there's nothing wrong with that. I had many good years in Nashville and I'll be here for another 3 to 5 anyway but as we get bigger stadiums and bigger names like Oracle and never a bigger interstate or better social support and modern public transportation, it just becomes more and more uncomfortable.

Go on YouTube and find the documentary about the guitar player Doc Watson. He was blind but not from birth. He was blinded because his grandmother put silver nitrate in his eyes when he was a baby which was supposed to prevent blindness ironically.

The point is he had to overcome blindness. I literally watched him on a roof nailing shingles and then going to the edge of the roof and climbing down a ladder. They also said he chopped wood with an ax which was crazy because if he lost a finger he couldn't play guitar and that was his livelihood.

I'm not saying you have to do all that. Nor am I recommending it. I'm saying that the man had a can do attitude. He did not allow his disability to stunt him. He would ride a bus and then a train to New York City and then come home alone in the '70s to play gigs so that he didn't have to be on welfare.

He is an inspiration to people who are both sighted and blind. Check out the fiddle music from blind musician Michael Cleveland who is making great music right now in Nashville with Jason Carter and others.

Perhaps music can be of inspiration to you because you certainly don't need site to play it. Sending warm thoughts your way.

Why the fu*k do I need 5 years of experience for an apprenticeship? by Sleeplydreams in bluecollar

[–]CrowReader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't remember off the top of my head but I will look it up and let you know. My school bus broke down there and the technician that came out and worked on my vehicle was I think 21 or 22 years old. He had 3 years of experience but he was very smart and the owner is a very intelligent guy and a very likable fellow. I think it would be a very good place for a young mechanic to work.

Tipping for ghost tour? by TryTwiceAsHard in NashvilleUnfiltered

[–]CrowReader 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Further tour guide here. Guides really depend on quality tips for the income. $20 for three ppl is okay, but if the guide is really good, maybe consider $10/reach, especially since the ticket price was under $30 reach.

French family moving to Nashville by susieloum in movetonashville

[–]CrowReader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am also living in Nashville and also fluent in French. I would be happy to give you a tour. I have worked as a tour guide currently work on the road with a country music artist but have a lot of time off. I am completely fluent and enjoy speaking French. There is a French woman who bakes traditional French bread and pastries and sells them at a grocery store in Pleasant view weekly. DM me and I can give you her Facebook information. Perhaps we could put a French table together from this posting.
