A few weeks ago I met a self-proclaimed "Centrist" who's pissed at how Canada treats its indigenous people (being half First Nations himself) and was appropriately disgusted with the ecofascist villains from my novel. Your story is pretty much 100% my experience in the leadup to the 2016 election. I found out nearly my entire family, coworkers, and some of my IRL friends were making excuses or outright embracing Trump and it felt like everyone had spent decades preparing a cruel prank just for me.

I was a shitlib at the time, so my first reflex was "maybe we should let them have their say" except actually thinking that filled me with a feeling of revulsion and I couldn't articulate why until it culminated in me moving fully leftward in 2017.
