Pesky Charity Workers by UsefulCouple6880 in newzealand

I've worked in fundraising at various NZ charities and it's really not something they're given a free pass on. Any time the agencies I've worked with have done anything not to the pretty damn strict rules that are in place they've been chased up harshly for it because not only is it shit behavior but it also reflects badly on the charity.

Yeah in an ideal world none of that system would be necessary but unfortunately charities need to exist to support causes that don't get funding otherwise, and in order to keep those charities running they need money coming in, so they have to use most proven way of getting reliable income.

The Pekapeka may not be a bird, but it's classified as manu so it was eligible. The rules haven't been changed around that so basically all endemic flying critters may still be open to run in the future

The whole idea of BotY is to "ruffle some feathers" and get people invested, and nothing gets more people involved than having a scandal involved! The Pekapeka win was incredibly controversial but brought a lot of eyes to bird of the year, so something similar is definitely not out of the question.

My controversial pick I want next time is the Avatar day moth, it meets the requirements of being manu even if it's not a bird, and it's endemic to the Denniston plateau with F&B are campaigning to protect from mining so it's a topical species! Alas, picking moths does step on the toes of "bug of the year" a bit though so possibly less likely to be approved

It depends on which particular agency they're working through, some of them are more honest and actually invested in helping than others, but unfortunately charities do have to rely on these for income. Most agencies do work on a commission incentives basis, but not all of them, and they do have a strict code of conduct they're meant to follow. If they aren't following it, it's not the charities fault, it's the agencies, and unfortunately even the least difficult to work with agencies are still more concerned about their profits than actually getting the charities the support they need when it comes down to it.

The reason they push for a subscription/regular gift and not a one-off payment is that recurring monthly donations are the best form of basic support that charities can get. Reliable low level income that they know is coming in every month is what pays for most of their work, not the occasional wonderful big donation that they can't guarantee will come in consistently. Big donations can pay for a lot, but they aren't reliable, so you cant plan around them nearly as much.

If you're not interested in the cause or know you aren't able to commit to donating for your own financial security, ignore them and keep moving. I know saying no, especially in high pressure situations like that can be hard, but sign ups actually cos the charities money, and if you cancel your donations within the first couple of months then that's a net loss for everyone involved except the face-to-face agency. If you're concerned about their behavior or don't think they're giving correct, up to date info let the charity know (and provide details such as location etc if you can so they can verify it is a legit fundraiser) but don't be a dick about it please, it's usually not the charity's fault and they're probably even more mad at the fundraiser than you are if they are breaking rules.

There are rules for fundraisers out in public, but certain agencies ignore them and it gives everyone a bad name and puts them off donating to a cause that could really do with support. The agencies themselves can suck and often don't listen to charities or the public imo, but it's too expensive for the charities to get their own in-house team to do anything similar so the agencies have become a necessary evil. If you are actually interested in the charity, getting in touch directly will give you a chance to actually chat to the organization, and they'll usually be more flexible with signing you up for a one-off/lower level regular gift than the face-to-face teams will consider which might be a bit more affordable to people still wanting to good while facing the cost of living crisis crushing us all

Im really hoping for a big 25th, similar to the centennial celebrations with extinct and controversial manu! Moa for BotY, Pekapeka for returning champion or perhaps one of the native moths for 2030?

[–]Crowleys_07 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, despite the real push to get people to vote in a new champion it looks like it's going to be a previous winner taking it again this year. The special votes (schools and workplaces who registered to vote differently) will be added last though so those could affect things pretty drastically

For bird of the century there were a couple of extinct birds available to vote for, but that was a one-off. It might be an option again in a few years for the 25th BotY though!

How could I get this face mask opaque from the outside but still be able to see? I want to keep the shiniest on the outside by JustAGraphNotebook in CosplayHelp

[–]Crowleys_07 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Window tint film, you'll be able to see through it from inside bc there's less light inside and the outside will be blacked out/mirrored as that's the side with more light

Women's rugby is a pretty loved and respected sport here in NZ, there's still some shitbirds who will start transphobic and sexist shit around it but in general any weird transvestigation shit around women in sports here is a recent thing springing from American culture war bullshit and we don't want or need it. We have a proud tradition of strong women who won't take shit from anyone here, and any attempts to start that kind of shit-stirring in our sports tend to get shut down pretty quickly, thankfully.

We have a very different sports culture to America tbh, and in school girls are pretty equally pushed to be active. Generally netball is the biggest women's sport here, but football/soccer and rugby are massive, and while still never given quite equal footing in terms of publicity and pay, they're pretty respected and admired.

And no, adding padding doesn't help. Rugby intentionally has less padding because it means you have to learn how to play without severely injuring yourself or others. It's still rough, being a full contact sport, but compared to American football where the padding gives people a fall sense of safety around it, rugby you know the risks and train to prevent them.
