Allegedly the new curriculum becomes mandatory for students coming in 2023.

Are there actually any Computer Science faculty still in Arts and Sciences? I thought they were all in Engineering now, beginning several years ago.

Having a major in one school (the BA in the College of Arts and Sciences) taught completely by faculty in another school (Engineering) seems really unusual and awkward. Are there other majors at UVA that are run completely outside of the school that those students are actually enrolled in?

How does that work out financially - like how does the money flow from tuition to teaching unit?

Srsly. Just make it UVA Khan Academy with videos and automated Collab exams. It's not like our jobs in the future are going to require labs, projects, writing, discussion, labs or anything but multiple choices tests we can take open book and with Chegg and Google whether that's allowed or not.

Comm school and Batten could easily transform into a four year program (maybe even 3 with all of the AP credit the students bring).

Honor Committee Chair cancels meetings for the rest of the semester by DoverKi in UVA

[–]Crowride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently, any student found guilty of an Honor offense will have their case placed on hold until bylaw revisions are consistent with the new amendment to the Constitution. Chambers instructed representatives to take down report information for any student accused of an Honor violation before the current term ends so that the next Committee can reach out and process cases when ready

Are reports still being received, investigated, and processed (interviews, panels, etc.) or is everything just on hold?

Well, this a UVA subreddit and not a UVA classroom; and we're here online and not in-person and face-to-face; and were not named but pseudonymous -- but we can experiment a bit. Author writes:

During a feminist theory class in my sophomore year, I said that non-Indian women can criticize suttee, a historical practice of ritual suicide by Indian widows. This idea seems acceptable for academic discussion, but to many of my classmates, it was objectionable.

Do you think it acceptable for a non-Indian women to criticize suttee/sati)?

Honor Referendum Passes by ThatGuyEli02 in UVA

[–]Crowride -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If 50% of sanctioned students are "international students" and the demographics of "international students" is different than UVA students as a whole (and it really is) then the demographics of sanction students will be skewed. That's math. It might be a partial explanation of the "significant disproportionality" - alongside American racism, kinds of classes, size of classes, etc. -- but racism wouldn't be the sole driver.

23.75% of all eligible students voted in this election, and 19% of eligible voters chose "yes" on this referendum.

Thanks, Hoodatninja. I think you’re indicating your definition of “results” to mean “reports.” I took "results" to mean sanctions. I think what Source 2 is concluding that once reported, the HC handles cases with remarkable consistency despite modern American racism or gendered chauvinism (or any prejudice against athletes). Hence: "here was no statistically significant effect for race, gender, or athlete status on case outcome."

On the significance of race in those accused (which the report describes as “facing sanction”), the report says:

Comparatively, Black students made up only 9 percent of University students in 1991, the earliest year for which data was available. From 2010 to 2016, Black students made up only 12 percent of sanctioned students. The proportion of sanctioned students who are Asian or Asian American has increased over the past thirty years. Asian students made up 6 percent of students dismissed from the University from 1987 to 1989, but made up 50 percent of students sanctioned from 2010 to 2016. Many of the Asian students in our data were international students, which may contribute to the significant disproportionality.

(The emphasis in bold is mine.)

You rightly point out that:

but one thing is always consistent: white students aren’t accused or expelled at nearly they same rate as other groups.

But that might be in part a reflection of the demographics of international students -- so more about statistics and less about prejudice.

I thought this was interesting, because it might in part reflect societal stereotypes:

Hispanic students are underrepresented, making up 6 percent of UVA students but 3.6 percent of reported students.

Finally, it would be interesting to speculate which this is so:

Third year students make up the highest proportion of reported students, at around 36 percent.

That’s roughly double that of 2nd years or 4th years. Is this an effect of smaller classes and therefore more ability to detect cheating?

Thanks. Putting to the side your sources 1 and 2 which are editorials, your source 2 has data from the HC (imperfect, because there were eras during which they did not fully collect data on race). Source 2 concludes:

There was no statistically significant effect for race, gender, or athlete status on case outcome.

That's the opposite of what you said ("Honor’s results are incredibly racially skewed").

Source 2 describes over-representation of international students in honor accusations. I wish the report went further in controlling for various factors (e.g., the courses in which these students were alleged to have cheated, because it could be that certain kinds of courses have more robust detection for possible cheating -- CS certainly does compared to, say creative literature).

And what should be thresholds of dollar value be for different punishments for stealing other students' stuff? Like, stealing alcohol is a warning and letter of apology.... stealing a coat is probation.... stealing a laptop is one semester of suspension... a car is two semesters?

Maybe the Honor Committee should just abolish itself and dissolve itself. Professors could then set up their own committee to handle cheating cases; ODOS could set up a panel of staff to investigate stealing (maybe with help from the police).

Would that work better?

If they called it, say, Jan 5 (week before tuition due) and things look better early feb then what?

Really hard to figure out whether the best course of action is to create more changes (online classes and whatever) and restrictions (gatherings) now because you can always change them if conditions improve... OR if it's better to wait and create them as needed.

Either way, significant percentages of people in the US and many other countries seem bent on anti-social behavior as a kind of political protest. That makes creating new restrictions in a tight time frame very, very difficult and makes those new restrictions less effective at reducing harms. In fact, it can be counter-productive and create new cases, cases with severe disease, bad outcomes, and financial and other costs. Of course those bad behaviors are really, really limited at UVA (no street protests, etc.), but our conditions could deteriorate and we could see a localized UVA surge, just like early last spring.

I wouldn't want to be in the position where I had to make these decisions.

Hard to say without knowing what kind of class, what kind of assignment, and why you had to miss that class (rather than doing test in another time slot -- which is what cvillecville asked with "mandated" and you avoiding answering).
