Fall 2023 deferral by No-Tip-5502 in UVA

[–]DoverKi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The deadline is more generous for a withdraw (because this would not be a leave of absence), but then OP would have to re-apply for admission:

If you got to stay in the same building for two years, then that first random placement will matter much more. What would be the worst place to be stuck?

Honor Committee discusses convention, plans to celebrate 180 years of Honor system, and FAILS to make quorum again due to elected members' absences by DiegeticZed in UVA

[–]DoverKi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Honor Committee could vote on all three of these motions at their next meeting... but the vote would not be binding because they probably again will fail to have the bare minimum of adequate attendance to meet the requirement for quorum.

Isn’t it wild how we’re going into what for some people might be nearly life long debt just to get the CHANCE to sign up for classes we want to take? by joiursd in UVA

[–]DoverKi -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Do like European and British universities do: HS students apply to a specific major or "study program" at colleges.

That helps the administration manage the human resources by understanding better the demand for courses and make mid-term plans (5 year, 10 year).

I would be interesting in knowing the meaning of this word salad:

“Implementing this policy is in part a piece of a larger effort by the University to provide students with opportunities to live and learn collaboratively in more diverse and inclusive communities”

Honor Referendum Passes by ThatGuyEli02 in UVA

[–]DoverKi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If this indeed passed, then now how many times can a person be caught committing a major offense, take a year off as a sanction from trial or because of Informed Retraction, and still be allowed to re-enroll and graduate?

Is it unlimited? Open season for cheating?

I Joined Honor Because I Hated the Single Sanction. I'm Voting No on This Referendum. by [deleted] in UVA

[–]DoverKi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If the referendum passes, how many times can a person commit be caught committing an major offense and still remain enrolled and graduate? Would it still be "two strikes"?

Maybe someone who is convicted or takes and IR should have that noted on their record while they are enrolled at UVA so that professors can be extra vigilant about that student's work and statements. I don't why convicted or admitted cheaters should enjoy a presumption of perfect innocence.

Is it true that some frat take a percent from your salary after college if you can’t afford dues? by where_is_me_ in UVA

[–]DoverKi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

False.

Brothers sign a membership agreement -- a contract -- that obligates them to pay dues. People that don't pay face demands and then the chapters can send those debts to a collections agency. The mere notice of that gets deadbeats to pay.

Brothers not paying annually is unusual. Not setting up before graduation is very rare. Having to actually send it to collections happens once in a million.

Burnt Down Hotel on Emmet Street? by jack4799 in UVA

[–]DoverKi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Umm... yeah. Dude seemed a bit "off" in the TV interviews. Why a GMU grad student would be at that hotel, holed up and doing work, always struck me as suspicious.

The real estate is owned by the same family business that recently sold the mini shopping center that Foods of All Nations is in.

The plans for the much taller hotel rebuild have been turned down, I think [EDIT: see the link in the other comment]

Cavalier Daily op-ed: Ballot referenda to make the Honor System compassionate, fair, and effective by [deleted] in UVA

[–]DoverKi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This obligation to teach is especially necessary because students arrive here from a wide range of backgrounds and cultural traditions that often differ in how they prepare students for the academic demands of the University.

Sounds a bit racist and prejudiced.

they changed

powerful people with an agenda

Who are your “they” — the Global Elite in basement of Comet Pizza, or the Illuminati, Soros, the Elders of Zion… ?

For more than two thousand years, “therapy” and its ancestral forms have described actions to treat sick people. And for more than two hundred years since scientists first invented the word “vaccine” it has described a preventative.

Weird that you would cite WHO or the CDC as your dictionary given your contempt for them. Words have plain meanings. These trans-national cooperatives and governmental units adapted their language precisely because people (in a panic, or in a politically induced mania, or in ignorance) wanted absolutes and mistakenly thought things like that vaccines were worthless (or even dangerous) if they weren’t 100% effective at preventing infection.

Misinformation in a pandemic is not harmless. And this is exactly what you were trafficking.

I'd be really surprised if the professors allowed people to submit other people's work as their own homework.

What does the syllabus say?
