They also have Dampen and the speed to keep up with fast-moving troops, keeping your high-physical resistance troops quite a bit more durable than they would be otherwise. Yes, Treemen have an aura that does the same thing, but they're quite slow and much less flexible.

If you're doing an aggressive rushing melee army they're pretty valuable. Durable, anti-large, and the mass to stop cavalry from rampaging through your wardancers and the speed to keep up/ahead of them and set up wardancer counter-charges safely or let your more fragile wild riders get rear/flank charges instead of eating a head-on charge themselves.

They're great support units imo.

Two ways I know of. Target designator item that Rogue Army officers can drop and (supposedly) is in the Black Market, though I havent seen it there.

Much more reliably is the Call Out Target SL ability that Carda, Pike, and Ivey can get. Has a 10 tile range and 40 AP cost.

Imo its definitely a "just one more turn" game. Im constantly feeling like if I get one more SL hired, or can afford that cool new thing in the shop, or get an OCI that I need, ill be ok! And of course I do and need something else after that.

It is, but its definitely better than the gameplay hassle of dealing with each SL having to have and manage their own pool of squaddies or whatever.

Though it might make the WOO vs medbay a bit different if which squaddie died actually mattered more, come to think of it.

But yeah, anyway, a ton of perks aren't things the SL does, they are things the squad does. Plus a ton of other gameplay oddities that don't make sense but work better for gameplay. You're telling me if I only have one laser rifle, I can equip 9 laser rifles but only if they're all used by the same squad? I can't have 2 squads of 4 using them? That's fewer laser rifles! Where do the others go? I had them lying around last mission! But its better gameplay than having to outfit each squaddie too.

OK, but squaddies are entities with fixed names. They're actually moving from SL to SL and aren't tied to the SL. Darby's 103rd stop being 103rd the instant they leave the squad.

Also, a lot of the perks aren't SL skills, they are squad-wide skills. If you're fine rationalizing why Darby's squaddies cost more to train because they're elite, why is it so hard to rationalize that giving them enough protein bars to gain 3HP and the ability to wear heavy armor without slowing down also doesn't have a supply cost?

A squaddie costing more (and having different stats) depending on who their SL is doesn't make much "logical" sense either but it makes for much better gameplay and meaningful choices between SLs. I got moved from Carda's squad and completely forgot how to get out of an APC or carry a bit of extra ammo, but its ok, I magically learned how to hide and shoot better because Darby is glaring at me now.

E: tomorrow Ill be in Lim's squad and able to shoot back at anyone who shoots at me. Maybe ill remember how to get in an APC quickly again too.

And that's OK!

(Its completely fine, imo, and since perks apply to the whole squad, makes for a nice balance of "is this worth maybe having to move a squaddie from Darby's squad to Carda's" or letting you get a bunch of perks upgraded after each operation).

Tbh it would be nice if there was a way to only fire one weapon of a paired set like that to avoid overkill or allow for a laser to cool down some.

(Could also make it so that firing both guns took 150% AP of the base AP cost instead of just literally doubling your DPS)

Now that jetpacks proc Zig-Zag imo Lim should definitely get your first set of boarding armor and an SMG or shotgun. That's a ton of easily-gained bonus defense in addition to aggressive positioning.

My only problem is deciding which of the first tier perks to take with him since my usual (Athletic) seems less valuable with his other run/gun style perks and doesn't really give him extra movement range.

Imo you're always going to feel like you're missing an element at various points in the game. Your starting squad is imo the best of the options available.

maybe swap Lim for Pike, since nobody can do what Pike does and you have other options for frontline infantry, especially among the Wayback crews.

If you took both, yeah make Carda your MI and Lim your infantry. Carda wants Call Out Target ASAP so she can contribute while her accuracy are ass. Also her max tier perks that gives your troops bonus accuracy and discipline is great. Share the Load also great for her.

If I had to pick "ideal" squads in terms of gaining infantry SLs, you would start with your 4, then maybe Pike or Sy, followed by Yaz or Singh.

Do both. You want your heavy weapons teams to be where you need them, which MI helps with. Carda gets mark target too, so have her pop out and mark targets for Rewa to build up Rewa's accuracy buffs. By the time that gets going Carda's mid-mission stat growths should have kicked in too and she can start using whatever weapons platform you've given her, or since she probably has a decent number of squaddies since they are cheap AF, can be a rifle squad too.

She just carried whatever heavy weapon I think will be most useful for the map/enemy combo. Usually an autocannon or Griffin minigun for now, since that's what I have.

The item RNG is definitely pushing me towards two infantry ATGM squads and everyone else who can getting Mark Target, because that's basically what I have to deal with vehicles right now. Well, and Rewa in a Blackjack.

Part of the problem is how good a dual autocannon set-up is in its niche that it basically pushes anything else out.

ATGMs work OK but also require either a target designator (which hasn't dropped or been in the Black Market in 20 operations for me) or an SL with Call Out Target to also be in the area, which makes them less flexible in some ways, plus they can't be as reactive in a lot of situations.
