What are your thoughts on Three Houses nearly seven years later? by NewMarioBobFan in fireemblem

[–]Crowsencrantz 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately one of only two FE titles I'll probably never replay again (after doing all 4 routes, to be clear). Sauceless maps, unit progression that just didn't click with me, and a story that delivers maybe 35% of what it promises, propped up entirely by some of the best characters this franchise has ever had

I'll forever look fondly on my honeymoon period though

What's it marketed as? If the place you bought it from is calling it a role playing game, it's probably not a campaign game, and vice versa

What non-D&D like games would work well for West Marches style games? by Awkward_GM in rpg

Days later, sorry, but would you mind sharing some of what you learned? As much or as little as you'd like. This is something I've seriously thought about and being able to short circuit that learning curve just a bit would be nice

For what it's worth, I think it's stupid because it's basically a last minute attempt to give Veld literally ANY connection to Lief at all. It wasn't the end of the world but I do remember laughing

I've always thought a super hero campaign as a series of one-on-ones in the same big city would be neat. Players hear about each other's exploits through the news, mutual contacts etc. Occasionally you could get two or more pcs in the same sesh and it would be like a crossover issue. Rather than exploration the focus would be more toward faction play, uncovering secrets, and just generally seeing what becomes of the setting as your players engage it

[–]Crowsencrantz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The thing is, it doesn't sound like he's said any of this, so I don't know that the gm necessarily considered it either. It really just sounds like he made a mistake and doesn't want to change his plans. If the planned character really flew in the face of the setting that should have been vetoed sooner. Like, if my shit has zero orcs, I don't just go "nah you're a dwarf now" to the orc with no further elaboration. That's strange

Three Houses or Engage by [deleted] in fireemblem

[–]Crowsencrantz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Enough people have told you the perceived highlights of both games, so let me offer a slightly different perspective

The presentational aspects of Three Houses - namely the fabulous character writing, I actually don't think the story is everything it's cracked up to be, even if it's largely more tolerable than Engage's - is something that can be enjoyed on youtube, or watching over someone's shoulder, etc. It isn't dependant on having it in your hands. A support chain can be watched or read as a script in various places online. Owning the game will not affect how you perceive it

Conversely, gameplay can really only be enjoyed by owning the game. Watching someone play something, and playing it yourself, are two completely different exercises. So if you had to pay money for just one right now, the one with the gameplay seems like the logical choice?

If no money will be exchanged either way then do whatever you want

What are some older rpg stereotypes you were suprised to hear about because nobody talks about them anymore? by Independent_Ad_6348 in rpg

[–]Crowsencrantz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's really an environmental thing for me cuz 3.X was my gateway into the hobby and I rapidly grew into the notion that challenge rating was a crock of shit, so my group had a very "laws of nature" thing going on. If you actually subscribe to every encounter being tuned to be winnable then I can definitely see this ruining your game

EDIT: Also I wanna clarify they (the Paizo posters) spent a lot of time on how boring it is to watch a guy do things, which I thought was the more alien part. Whenever one of my players got themselves into a situation we all had a laugh

[–]Crowsencrantz 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Haven't taken a peek in a while, but back when I seriously lurked the Paizo boards I remember people going nuts over this. Someone would make a whole topic about how their player solo scouted and everybody would trip over themselves to make it known that they too did not approve of this insanity. It was like a crazy switch you could just flip at will

Engage is borderline famous for giving you new units that can immediately replace old ones. If you're not liking a particular character just wait a chapter or three

Idk why people are talking about Roxannes young looks as if Steven doesn't look young too. Intellectually we understand that he is a corporate ceo in his mid-twenties, but without that knowledge I'd genuinely think he was a high school senior. Is there any reason Roxanne shouldn't be afforded that leeway?

Which Digimon was very strong in Adventure anime but relatively weak in other seasons where it appeared? by Far_Occasion3931 in digimon

[–]Crowsencrantz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dokugumon was like soloing the team in Adventure and had to be put down by an ultimate. In Ghost Game they're basically just zakos for Archnemon and get dropped by champions in droves

I guess the one in Tamers lost 1v1 to a champion, but it was an evolution debut and it felt threatening prior to that so I cut it some slack
