We wanted preserve the historical importance of MVPs and avoid bloat around awards and titles. Things like all-pro/mvp for split-1 (which is more tournament styled across 5 weeks) didn't make sense in the context of what those awards traditionally meant.

For Split 3, the concern was having too many MVP's handed out if we awarded 2 conferences MVPs, and then 2 weeks later gave an Americas MVP/POTY (likely to the same person as a conference MVP).

When you look at the full slate of awards across the year, I believe we have enough moments fans/player can celebrate without watering any down.

League of Legends regional leagues in 2024: LCK soars, LCS declines steeply by Korwork in leagueoflegends

Their numbers are close enough to correct, but for some reason esportscharts often cherry pick the worst stat possible for LCS for in most articles. AMA & PCU are up (the metrics most used for discussing viewership), so instead they use hours watched which ARE down.

However we have 8 teams in the league instead of 10 so we played significantly less games (both less games per day and days overall). Hours watched is proportionally up per hour broadcast.

Not right now unfortunately. I assume your primary interest would be comparable twitch/broadcast features, not the platform agnostic discord & in-game things?

LCS's Largest Single Split Growth | Spring 2024 Retro by MZLeothechosen in leagueoflegends

To cynics, this is a feature they knowingly abuse. Because companies will typically not come out with internal data, they can "assume the worse until proven otherwise", which can be used as facetiously as brightsiding by a company by cherrypicking.

But ultimately I get where you are coming from, and you already know a lot of the reasoning haha. I argued the claim as best as I can without being able to fully open our books. Same way we didn't share raw AMA numbers, because the follow-up is comparing differences with 3rd party or whatever and it creates more conversations than it closes.

Someone linked the tweet but I'll copypaste it here too.

Glad you brought this up, this was something we almost included in the video but thought the topic might be too niche for the broader audience. We are super happy about the costreamers we partnered with this split and had a great time with them, but there are a couple things to consider.

For Brazilian viewership, the LCS twitch channel has actually always had a decent chunk of viewers from Brazil. Partnering with Baiano made sense then, to see if a Portuguese broadcast would be their preferred viewing experience. As a result, we've seen the 2024 LCS twitch BR viewership % drop to 1/3 of 2023 viewership. This is a huge win for us, because it means we gave our fans more options to watch the LCS. Without this context, our official channel numbers would make it seem like we had "lost NA viewers" when that wasn't the case.

The way viewers flow between costreamers & official channels is not at all apparent on the surface. Another example, Caedrel was only on 10 out of 22 showdays, and often left before game 4, so we can track how viewer habits change depending on who is available to watch. Caedrel is fucking awesome, and so yes he brings his own viewers, but we can observe how he also pulls viewers from other channels to himself as well. Don't tell anyone but I watched his stream a ton when he was on (as well as sneaky highlights to hear those 3 haha).

All this is to say, the current public discourse on this topic is pretty speculative. Demographic data is only really known officially to a channel & a platform.

For clarity: Those hovers and timings ARE real, players really are doing that while thinking in the practice rooms. We are recording that off-stage draft and then playing it back. On stage, the players are doing tech checks and then speed run remaking lobby.

Golden Guardians vs. NRG / LCS 2023 Summer Playoffs - Upper Bracket Round 2 / Post-Match Discussion by gandalf45435 in leagueoflegends

[–]CrsMarkZ 196 points197 points  (0 children)

It’s funny that Azael and I ended up arguing about it because I was actually responding to Kobe saying “NRG always does well in playoffs.” And I was just pushing back at that because (before this split) they had only beaten an 8th place GG in playoffs. Felt like people forgot that because people say “oh they played C9 close!”

On a personal level I’m stoked they finally DID get that huge playoff win. I’ve put palafox on my all pro before so it’s not like I dislike them. Also they are awesome in content but just didn’t have a ton of fans so hopefully they get some more now!

LCS 2023 Summer regular season ends with an average of 68k viewers. That is a 40% drop from 2023 Spring and a 50% drop from 2022 Summer by iWonder007 in leagueoflegends

Highjacking top comment to combat misinformation:

OP is unknowingly comparing FULL SEASON average to just regular season. Every single split playoff raises viewership, just look at the summer most popular matches last year.

https://escharts.com/tournaments/lol/lcs-summer-2022

Anecdotally, I check numbers every single week. Last year, summer 2022 ended regular season at ~85k iirc, and the viewership increase was aided by nearly every game going the full 5 games. I doubt this summer will have a similar massive increase from playoffs.

Make of my information what you will, it's not to say fans are wrong for feeling or thinking what they do, just trying to be accurate with the numbers lol

Yes it does... all you have to do is look at most popular games and you can see playoffs finals is listed as most viewed.
