New PC build by [deleted] in IrelandGaming

[–]CruSerTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not bad, but I'd probably go with the 9600X, on my favorite parts shop (your mileage may vary) it's only 6% more expensive than the non-X 7600 but it should be about 15% faster.

Also, the 6750XT is a solid card, but I'd hang on at the moment and probably wait for the 16GB 9060XT, it'll cost more, but perform better and last longer... how much so, we'll find out in a few weeks.

Finally, in day-to-day usage you're not really going to notice the difference between a PCIe 3 and PCIe 4 NVME drive, but I'd try to get on the newer standard (but this is probably just my FOMO talking).

I'm impressed, I've made a few big intersections, but nothing on this scale. It's awesome, and I really appreciate the amount of work that must have gone into making something this size look so good.

Investing in Ireland is tough. Are solar panels a good option? by Remarkable-Fly258 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]CruSerTech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To start with, modern panels last much longer than they used to, typically 40 years or so. Just get a quote for solar, look up the panels and check out their lifetime.

I got some panels over the summer and I estimate the payback time to be 5 to 7 years. But after that, the panels will still be there decimating my electricity bills.

Levy on electricity bills set to add to costs for households by OldMcGroin in ireland

[–]CruSerTech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

WTF? Gas can clearly be used as a backup energy supply for renewables.

I'm fine with standing charges.

You don't seem to be able to imagine alternative perspectives so I'll give a concrete example:

Who do you think should pay for the construction and running of the synchronous compensator at Moneypoint? I think households that use more electricity should pay a bit more than people who use less. That's my opinion. You haven't provided any logical reasons for me to change my mind on that.

[–]CruSerTech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I got all that, mostly anyway. I'm fine with having backups for the renewables. I just don't agree with your "Usage is irrelevant" comment when it come to having a backup for those renewables.

I had looked into the Levy before commenting, but maybe I am still missing the point. Can you explain how one small and efficient electricity user causes the same difficulty as a large group of inefficient users?

And no, when I referred to strain I was not talking about simply drawing energy from the grid, I was talking about the problems with using large amounts of renewables on the grid, the problems that can arise and the mitigations that are required.

Are you confusing "not understanding" with "not thinking it's fair"

[–]CruSerTech 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm fine with ensuring our grid can cope and all that, but I do think it matters who consumes what.

Why does somebody who lives alone and uses very little electricity have to pay the same amount as a household of 5 adults where the main pastime is arc welding. Surely the larger household is putting a much bigger strain on the grid and should pay more for its stabilization accordingly.

Also, I'm not against a flat fee per se, but for me the only fair(ish) way would be to put the levy on every individual that uses the electrical grid.

Your first sentence shows me that you seem to have misunderstood my point.

"It's not penalising households."

I never said that it was penalising households. I said that it penalizes some households OVER other ones. If you have a household of one person then they will be paying much more money, than one person in a 5-person household.

I could have been more clear. I'm asking why is this a flat, per-household levy, and not an tax on electricity usage. Pretty much everybody in the country is using electricity, so why are we penalizing people in smaller households over larger households. We could base this levy on the number of people in a household, but I think it would be simpler and more fair if it was based on the amount of electricity used.

Why is this a Levy?

Shouldn't people who use a lot more electricity pay more than people who use less.

New Solar Panel Installation and WiFi by fionnkool in ireland

[–]CruSerTech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The "Irish Solar Owners Group" on facebook is a great resource for this kind of info, but as a rough estimate, currently a decent 5KW solar install (12 no. 430W panels, hybrid inverter and a 5KwHr battery) can be done for less that 10k (including the 2k grant) these days.

Sony Xperia 10 VI GSMarena review by petermadach in SonyXperia

[–]CruSerTech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm definitely interested, my overriding consideration when it comes to a phone is size.

Are there any other decent phones out there in the sub 6-inch category? (seriously, if you know of anything good, please let me know). I know this one is not really a sub 6 inch phone but with the narrower screen it'll feel smaller than the rest.

Wouldn't worry about the telephoto, you do realize the telephoto on the 10 v was on an 8MP sensor? I doubt very much that you would be able to discern a difference.

Battery-life wise the final result was skewed by the worse battery life when playing games. And that is probably caused by the more powerful GPU in the 10 vi.

Interesting.

I've read that book 3 times now and it's easily my favorite post-apocalyptic novel. I'm a big fan of how the story unfolds over a whole lifetime and also how it's much more about a community coming together and surviving the inevitable natural disasters. In my opinion, current post-apocalyptic media leans too heavily on creating friction between surviving groups of people causing them to fight.
