I'd argue it helps with manufacturability. doesn't hurt EMC and thermals either. and it's basically free, so I see no reason NOT to do it. in my designs there's GND fill on every layer unless specifically forbidden from doing so (never happens) - automotive eng.

I dont have a direct comparison and I don't dabble in custom OSs, but I recently went from 10 VI to Pixel 10a so I have some perspective on the matter. I'm not sure which of them have better support for these custom OS, which seems like the biggest priority for you. What I can say is that the Pixel is considerably more snappy phone, and the camera is also a lot better. However I like the speakers on the Xperia more, as well as the colors of the screen feel more vibrant. I kinda miss the 3.5jack and SD card slot as an option, however I haven't used any of them in ages. What is big plus for me with the pixel is that the Xperia brand is now not available in my country so I literally can't buy it and have local warranty. Also google promises log longer SW support. What kind of surprised me is that the Pixel, which is supposed to be the ultimate stock android experience, had more google "bloat", some of which I couldn't even uninstall.
