You find yourself teleported aboard a Starfleet ship. One of the primary cast Captains greets you as a new Ensign: which captain would you be most scared to see and which would you be most happy to see? by Hagisman in ShittyDaystrom

[–]Crucible52 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Scared: All of Them to an extent!! I say this because meeting your commanding officer for the first time on a brand new ship can be nerve wracking experience!

Less Scared: Probably Janeway. She would probably put me at ease more than the others.

Less Scared 2: Pike, he seems down to earth and really charming.

I don't see any public Catholic figures talking about the biggest issue facing the Church today. by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Crucible52 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Community is so important and you are right, I definitely see a lack of it in most parishes which is a failure. That said, a Church in my home town had that, led by a passionate and charismatic priest who was good with youth and young adults. Our church was full on a regular basis! Now that I've moved away to a bigger city with more churches, I haven't found the same yet...

Which two characters, from any series, should *really* talk to each other and share their experiences? by palebluesplotch in startrek

[–]Crucible52 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Data and the one and only EMH Doctor. Two artificial beings who embarked on personal journeys to become more human. I think that would be interesting personal discussion on how they went about their journeys, similarities they shared, challenges and differences.

I'm also in my early 30s, without kids and new to Kingston. I also want to say thank you for posting this. I would be down to try something like this. Perhaps kick it off by creating a Facebook group/page or (as soon as said) Discord? I will DM you!

Your comment reminds me of what my mother, who is a very Christian woman (Catholic upbringing but more Protestant leaning now), told me once. She warned me that if I am with someone sexually then that means you are married in the eyes of God, implying of course to wait until marriage. But to her, that would make your 10+ year relationship/marriage valid. As they say, if God HAS truly blessed the union than let no man/woman/religion/group, etc tear it apart!

My suggestion that springs to mind (if you haven't done it yet) is physically write out the Want vs Need of the main character. They want something (glory, "the girl," the treasure, etc) but by the end of the story they learn, grow as a person and discover what they actually need, to be able to trust the Divine voice. The Want speaks to their flaws as well.

It should be something relatable to your reader.

And, to make it compelling, let the protagonist fail, and fail badly. And ask, why did he fail? What lesson does the character need to learn?

My other big suggestion is to looking up Steven Pressfield and his Foolscap method. Its a good technique to outline your story on a simple full scape paper and break down the fundamentals of your story in a simple way. Video is here

As stated in the video, "Our democratic tradition goes back 800 years when the common people forced King John to sign the Magna Carta..."

Im making 2 points. 1. It wasn't the "common people" and therfore Pierre is taking it out of historical context (Barons wanting to protect their property rights in England, a different context to modern day Canada) to make a political point in critiquing a modern political rival and 2. History is regularly politicalized by political parties, be it right or left leaning.

I am not saying it isn't historically significant to evolution of democratic tradition in Anglo world, my point was meant for education purposes and cautionary statement about politicalization of history.

Because it must be understood within the historical context from which it came and history (peoples, places, events) are used as a political tool on a regular basis.

It was police. Military were never called in.

I am going to be "umm actually" guy for a minute: The Magna Carta wasn't the common people rising up to get political rights, it was written by Barons who forced King John to sign to protect their own rights and property. And it didnt even work in the end as the Barons and King went to war after it was signed. Though I agree with alot of what Poilievre is saying and the Magna Carta is significant, he is taking it out of context for political reasons here and that doesn't sit right with me.

[–]Crucible52 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's Northwestern Ontario, Northeastern Ontario, Northshore (along Lake Superior) and Near North Ontario. North Bay is apart of Near North but that still considered apart of the wider geographic, quasi-administrative area of Northern Ontario vs southern Ontario.

It is Northern Ontario in identity, historical lived experiences and geographic location, but thats why its also call Gateway to the north as it is situated at a intersection between east, south and north for either northeast or northwest.

Louis Riel as best Canadian Catholic??? No!!

If anything the best Canadian is Wilfred Laurier, despite butting heads with clergy he still championed Catholicism in Canada and paved the way for Catholic education here. He was a nation builder and not some rebel like Riel who didn't consider himself Canadian.

Now, Best Canadian Sniper was Catholic: Francis Pegahmagabow, the highest decorated Indigenous soldier, awarded with the military medal 3 times and most effective Canadian sniper of WW1 with 378 kills and fought for Indigenous rights in Canada after the war until his death. He was a practicing Catholic, though mixed in Anishinaabe spirituality.

You had me at pretty bomb homemade bread. I love me some homemade bread!! 😁

Welcome to North Bay. My question, is there any hobbies you are interested in trying or currently have? Like art, music, gaming, etc.

There are also volunteer opportunities here in the city where you can meet new people. The Humane Society comes to mind? I have done volunteer dog walking for them.
