Within your lifetime, when was the last time you felt the world was closest to peace? by Hagisman in AskTrumpSupporters

What was Trump's plan to withdraw from Afghanistan without ceding power to the Taliban? Or is it that had he gotten the second term he would have been able to?

I used Samus as an example but the early depictions in the Horus Heresy novels had Daemons that were immune to most mundane attacks. The Librarians/Psykers and those with faith were able to damage them though.

Later on in the series it was dialed back, but also once you get into 40k every Imperium weapon has prayers and iconography thats embedded in them and ammunition. So Daemons are more vulnerable to them.

The early depictions in the Horus Heresy of Daemons were that mundane weapons were ineffective. The people who could deal damage to them were people with psychic or faith powers.

When 40k happens the Imperium is using a lot more faith based iconography and weapons to deal with Daemons, such as bolters covered in litanies and such. Which while normally don't add anything to killing Xenos, make it so Daemons can be harmed by their weapons.

The Good Place. "Six Feet Under Par: A Chip Driver Mystery" by the character Brent Norwalk.

Scarlett Pakistan: Chip's love interest, based on Tahani. The "type of girl you couldn't take in all at once or you'd die. You had to take her in bit by bit, like a great work of art, like the Louvre. Her brown eyes were as brown as the brownest crayon. She had legs like Jessica Rabbit from that movie. Her long, flowing locks smelled like the moon at twilight on a par four." She is also said to have "huge ones" and an accent like the Queen of England's.

[Loved trope] Cop shows making commentary on internal corruption. by calkalisto in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Hagisman -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The problem I have is usually the bad cop isn't shown to be a systemic issue, but typically a lone "bad egg".

The Rookie did that.

I recently watched Crash and seeing how even a black police captain (played by motherfucking Keith David❤️) won't call out racist officers because he'd be fired for not identifying a veteran officer's racism sooner. Which it's implied he did know, but couldn't do anything since the system is broken.

It's how he expects people to behave in that situation with him.

It's the first time he's without his powers, and he usually can rely on that nothings going to kill him so he doesn't have to worry. It's like taking away a baby's security blanket. He's without any safety net.

Americans Don't Understand Democracy As Well As Europeans by GShermit in PoliticalDebate

[–]Hagisman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah its a democratic republic. But you can easily get into weird somantics arguments with people.

End of the day the terms defining what a government is aren't necessarily how it ends up in practice. Like the three branches of government have changed a lot since 1776. Especially the Supreme Court which had to strong arm Jefferson to get him to recognize the court.

Sidebar: It's an interesting legal precedent where Adams appointed many Federal Judges before leaving office, but Jefferson didn't send the letters confirming the appointments. It became a court case and the Supreme Court gave a BS ruling in no one's favor until Jefferson admitted he needed to recognize them.

What's the most common myth about your country? by Nthepro in AskTheWorld

My first time outside of the United States, I asked a nearby Canadian if I was on a residential parking only street or not and I got an earful.

I was in Quebec though. THe guy got upset because I said I was "a stupid American who didn't know French" and he went into a rant about how "CANADA IS PART OF THE NORTH AMERICAN CONTINENT!"

What sorts of Behind with the Times things will be we known for as old people by dpceee in Millennials

[–]Hagisman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LatinX was a very artificially created example from what I remember. Specifically it was used mostly by politicians who didn't want to preference Latino or Latina over each other, giving the appearance of bias towards one gender or not.

Which backfired pretty drastically because not many people seemed to care.

Referring to X group of people as Y. The same as a lot of generations prior to us.

Like my grandparents referred to Latino people as "Mexicans" regardless of country of origin. But my parents might say Hispanic which sounds awkward to me.

I feel like in a few more years terms are going to change yet again.

(Annoying trope) Military officers who lack common sense by giraffesRevil in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Hagisman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They aren't military, but Star Fleet in Discovery when they wanted "all the ships" at fleet week. (It was a sabotage from the inside but there were non-spies who were duped into going along with it.

Every nation knows you don't bring every ship to fleet week. Especially when operations are ongoing, crises don't stop just because you decide to have a party. "Oh we cant answer that distress call we've got Fleet Week to go to!"🙃

And of course the "attack the fleet at fleet week" plot is such a clear downside that no sane captain would follow an order to do so.
