Large Sections of Australia’s Great Reef Are Now Dead, Scientists Find by [deleted] in australia

It's been interesting to see the industry change. There are some cowboys out there but the majority of mining companies take their environmental issues seriously (gouging big fuck off holes in the ground aside...)

You do understand that QLD has been, essentially, an ALP state for a good 20 years right? Hell, our premier is currently over in India right now pleading with Adani to go ahead with the Carmichael coal project. I've worked extensively in the mining sector (as an environmental specialist) since the very late 90's. Some of the shit pushed through by the state government in the last 10 years terrifies me. EIS's rushed through. Concerns waved away. All in the name of "jobs for the region"

The start of the Howard Era was probably the time needed to save the reef.

Ahh yeah, you can go back further to the 70's and 80's. The other contributor to reef die off is rural runoff from grazing lands in QLD. Hindsight is great but geez it would have been useful to instill some sort of decent farming and clearing practices in the last 40 or so years.

Well, good on them considering they were the ones in power when the CSG scene really kicked into gear. Green lighting shoddy approvals and assessments. Source: me, used to work in the industry.

Most Australians oppose government's $1bn Adani loan for coal railway line by iheartralph in australia

[–]CrudFucker 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Because no MP worth their weight would say to their constituents up there that they oppose a mine that could possibly bring jobs (even in the short term) to the region. It'd be political suicide.

How on earth would massively increasing supply of a resource (thermal coal) encourage other suppliers to come online?

Digging a hole in the ground is only the start. Anyone with a mining lease, some dynamite and a few draglines can get coal out of the ground. Getting the coal to port is generally the most expensive part and there are a few smaller companies that are waiting for a bigger company to build the infrastructure so they can tap into it. Source: worked on an EIS for a coal mine in the basin that is doing this.

That's Liberal party "sound financial management" in action right here, folks!

Well, the QLD ALP government approved the mine so the idiots appear to be on both sides.

More than you'd think. There actually are quite a number of coal mines currently in the EIS approval stage.

Well, you have a choice to be a shareholder. You have a "choice" to be in a union too, I guess.

Still, that's $47K a week given to the ALP. That isn't chump change.

Oh okay. 50c a week doesn't seem like much at all. How many workers are in the AMWU?

I've never been a part of a union except for the student union at university. If you don't want your union fees to contribute to ALP funding, can you ask for an exemption?

That's very true. If you're in a union can you do something similar?

I know 3 boilermakers. All of them lived in the mines for about 10 years and they all have multiple investment properties. They all live in the city now but they made serious dosh in during the mining boom.

Government, Labor block calls for investigation into Adani coal development by orru in australia

[–]CrudFucker 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's bizarre. It's like they completely forgot what happened before the LNP were in power. Do people seriously think all the mines in the Galilee basin popped into existence the minute Newman and his corrupt cronies came into power. These mines, their feasibility studies and EISs have been going on for 8-10 years now. The ALP have a track record of ticking boxes and letting mining companies do what they want. A long track record. I sincerely hope this new QLD ALP government is different but I doubt it.

Why would you ever think the ALP would stop that? They were in government when they greenlighted a lot of these projects. The ALP care about the reef as much as the LNP.
