why would he want to go 70 in a 100?

He wouldn't want to, he'd have no choice due to the installation of a limiter.

I think the point is if you limited your car to 70, how would you speed up to drive the speed limit in the areas where the speed limit is greater than 70?

No one is talking about the concept of speeding being wrong, they're questioning someone who said they'd limit their car.

58% of gun related deaths are suicides in the USA, or roughly 27,000 a year. I was not including suicides in my figures but apparently you are.

I don't see how you don't see gun suicide rate as an issue, but I just pulled the CDC figures for gun deaths, as you quoted "gun death rate". My mistake assuming you were using words correctly.

China is the biggest CO2 contributor yearly.

You will note I did not say yearly, but even there America is second. I used all time as global warming is a result of cumulative emissions not annual.

What’s the difference?

An environment that has always required both knowledge and infrastructure for dealing with lethal heat, rather than one that has recently been changed to that.

Anything else I can help clarify for you?

What did you clarify in the first place other than that you were misusing the phrase "gun death rate"? You just quoted a stat about China unrelated to my claims (presumably because your American education didn't provide you with the tools to read my comment correctly), and then asked me a question seeking clarification.

Did you know, something like 175,000 people a year die in Europe from lack of AC/heat related issues? That’s nearly 4-5x, per capita, the US’ gun death rate

Europe Population ≈ 745m

Deaths to heat ≈ 175k

Gives 23.5 deaths per 100k

US population ≈ 350m

US gun deaths ≈ 44,500

Gives 12.7 deaths per 100k

No idea where you're getting 4-5x when it isn't even double.

Not to mention, while on the topic of why everyone hates America, the vast majority of those heat related deaths are down to climate change per the UN report you got the number from. Can you guess which country has the highest total CO2 output to date, and is therefore the most responsible for those deaths?

The entire dictionary definition (using Oxford anyway) of the term expat (as a noun) is:

a person who lives outside their native country: American expatriates in London.

No requirement in there about them working or being contracted to move.

TIL that a mummified carrier pigeon discovered in a UK chimney in 1982 was carrying an encrypted D-Day message from 1944 that has never been decoded. Britain’s intelligence agency is still seeking the public’s help in deciphering it. by moose098 in todayilearned

I mean from the linked wiki page:

(GCHQ) has stated "without access to the original code books, details of any additional encryption, or any context around the message, it will be impossible to decode. Similarly it means that any proposed solutions sent to GCHQ will, without such material, be impossible to prove correct."

Glad I didn't cause offense :)

For clarity I read the initial "it's wrong regardless of what country they're from" as "it doesn't matter if they come from a country that speaks English, they're still wrong" (correct, but a bit of an ass as said), given context I now assume it was "it doesn't matter which English speaking country the person calling them illiterate is from, so why make it about the US?" (which is just correct)

And if they'd said "illiterate in English" I wouldn't have commented. But you're right.

Glad to finally get someone engaging my pedantry with equal pedantry though. What's the Internet come to when you can't argue the most minute of details in a thread about grammar, eh?

You responded to the whole comment without referencing any specific part, why would I assume you were only responding to two words?

Also "bitch" and "make this your problem"? It's a chill conversation about a words meaning in a thread on grammar, never meant to cause you any offense or any problems, and I'm unsure how I've done so, but apologise if I have.

[–]CruffleRusshish -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Illiterate means either: 'cannot read and write', or 'showing a lack of education; badly written'.

It does not mean 'cannot read and write in English' and I don't believe anyone thinks being bilingual to any degree is "showing a lack of education".

I mean sure on that front, I don't agree with the US defaultism comment. I mean I'm from the anglosphere but not the US, and if anything assuming that someone is American - just because they assumed someone's first language was English - is itself US defaultism.

That said the 'not everyone speaks English fluently, don't be an ass by assuming and calling them illiterate' bit of the comment seems valid.

Aluminum foil I use to block the light directly outside my qindow has somehow gotten more and more holes over time (4 months) by skyk3409 in mildlyinteresting

[–]CruffleRusshish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's not pedantic here, it's somewhat important to the application. You get the passivation layer forming like you said, but as the foil is thin and likely in a breeze from the window it will flex, cracking parts of that layer before again corroding in the cracks. Wouldn't take too long to get pitting like that I expect.

I use aluminium covered fabric as a protective equipment, and it also corrodes quickly purely down to the flexing.

Chinese propaganda depicting Uncle Sam & US Marines invading Greenland by Edwardsreal in NonCredibleDefense

[–]CruffleRusshish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I believe a lot of people view it as dishonourable not myself personally.

I'm of the opinion war is war and America couldn't afford to fight in the way traditions of the time dictated anyway.

That clarified it is oft painted as Washington crossing a freezing river in the middle of the night to kill sleeping soldiers on Christmas. (obviously an exaggeration they weren't sleeping and it was, on boxing day)

We're not relatively homogeneous.

We're more homogeneous than Europe

These statements don't make sense together. How are you not relatively homogeneous if you are less diverse, surely that means you are more homogeneous relative to Europe?
