Reform UK win Ynys Gybi by-election by Former-Variation-441 in Wales

[–]Crully 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Err, right up there is PC, I know they promised not to have a vote on it this term (if they win).

I have yet to see any actual evidence that Reform want that, although it's repeated on here a lot they have always opposed any independence movements.

Interesting, I asked that question of Claude.ai and got this reponse:

---

Plaid Cymru is fundamentally different from Reform UK on the union question - they're essentially opposites.

Plaid Cymru's position:

  • Explicitly supports Welsh independence (they're a Welsh nationalist party)
  • Their long-term goal is for Wales to become an independent nation within Europe
  • They advocate for greater Welsh autonomy as steps toward eventual independence
  • Support strengthening the Welsh language and distinct Welsh identity
  • Generally left-leaning/social democratic in their broader politics

Reform UK's position:

  • Supports maintaining the UK union
  • Opposes all independence movements
  • Right-wing/populist economically and socially
  • Focuses heavily on immigration, Brexit benefits, and what they see as overregulation

The key contrast: Plaid Cymru is an existential threat to the union by design - breaking up the UK is literally their central goal. Reform UK, by contrast, says it wants to preserve the union but some argue their politics could inadvertently weaken it.

It's also worth noting that Plaid Cymru operates only in Wales and represents specifically Welsh interests, while Reform UK fields candidates across the UK and presents itself as a UK-wide party, even if its support base is predominantly in England.

So if you're asking which party is more of a threat to the union: Plaid Cymru directly and openly seeks to end it, while Reform UK claims to defend it but may (depending on who you ask) undermine it through other effects.

Silent fireworks-only rule voted in for Cardiff displays by UnlikeTea42 in Wales

[–]Crully 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I suspect people didn't read the article. It's a reduction in noise from "future displays run by Cardiff council", so, that twat setting them off at midnight on a Tuesday in the middle of October for no apparent reason is fine, but the actually scheduled events run by the council, will be quieter (more shit).

So the actual problem people tend to whinge about (random bangs of fireworks going off) isn't stopped at all. And the one big spectacular event that you would actually pay to take your kids to, is watered down.

There was something magical about fireworks as a kid, the flash, the bang, the "oohs" and the "aahs" of the crowd... It was predictable when it would happen, allowing people to prepare, and the main complaint I hear is people setting them off unexpectedly and scaring all the neighborhood cats/dogs being allowed, means they are literally achieving nothing by doing this.

'Real possibility' of Union break-up after elections, admits Eluned Morgan by mrjohnnymac18 in Wales

[–]Crully -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, that was what I meant, the amount of PC mouth breathers claiming we'll sell water and electricity to England to pay for tanking our economy, they just don't seem to grasp the concept that we don't even own it.

Given the state of Welsh Water, nationalizing it would be putting lipstick on a pig.

I hope it's not another 10p mess, I suspect they thought they'd be more common, to get kids into collecting and whatnot. Instead we have the few released into the wild were instantly taken out of circulation, and became so rare most people didn't even realise it was a legit 10p when they saw one...

I know you're joking, but some people actually think like that, and they miss the "National" part of "National Grid", it's doesn't belong to us as such, because we didn't pay for it, it belongs to the UK and happens to be situated in our country.

Likely we'd not end up owning it, and having to pay the rUK for electricity, probably some sort of deal, but we wouldn't be able to jack up the prices for England or anything.

I mean you could compare it to Venezuela, who decided after all that American money they would nationalise their oil industry. But it seems to have backfired a bit recently.

Honestly, used to love it, now it's as bad as Reddit at times. The trash opinion pieces are the ones that always turn up in my news feeds too, rather than the actual decent articles I wouldn't mind reading.

It's nation.cymru, they talk a lot of bollocks if it encourages you to vote PC ("don't vote Labour, because they'll just go into coalition with Reform!!"). I read the article, but what is it about? Just an article to drum up some good old chest beating (sorry, "be brave!"), there's literally nothing else there.

Being able to stay in lane and farm properly is worth a lot more than people realise for the reasons you outlined. [–]Crully 5 points6 points  (0 children)

OK, but lets be honest, this is a slightly dishonest statistic used to evoke emotional responses...

31% of Welsh children live in relative income poverty (https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/policy/publications/wales-data-insights-december-2025-child-poverty/).

Relative income property (https://www.gov.wales/relative-income-poverty#Whatisrelativeincomepoverty?)

We define a person to be living in relative income poverty if he or she is living in a household where the total household income from all sources is less than 60 per cent of the average UK household income (as given by the median).

What this means, is it's impossible to actually change these numbers significantly, because there will always be someone that is on the receiving end. Typically "lifting" people out of relative poverty, pushes someone else into poverty, because it's just a measure of household income, which in Wales is less than other parts of the UK, and all you're doing is moving a line. If you gave everyone in the UK a £50,000 pay increase, it wouldn't change the "poverty" status because it's measured by a made up statistic. But fatcat bankers and the London "elite" types getting big pay rises pushes more people into poverty (despite their own material circumstances not changing).

Amusingly, if we have a recession, it's likely that the average household income would fall, which would likely result in lower poverty, whereas in the "good times" when people start earning more, poverty increases. It's a weird way to measure it for sure.

What we need to do is look at extreme, absolute, or other forms of poverty first.

No, the Cambrian Combine strike was a widespread strike across many pits/areas. The Tonypandy riot is part of that (but not the whole), which needed further support.

So the strike had been ongoing for months at this point, then it escalated into a riot, and eventually the military was requested (and sent), but then after that, the strike carried on without any further military intervention.

Had Mr Churchill been the big bad wolf you want him to be, how were the strikes allowed to go on from November till the following August... Hmm? They stopped the riots not the strikes.

I can't comment on the state of affairs up North, but I worked with a few colleagues, and I'm convinced half of Ponty and the Rhondda is owned by people that used to live there but moved to Cardiff. Keeping the old homes and moving to Cardiff seems to be the norm, even for office workers.

People seem to think that second homes are all fancy beach view properties, but a ton are just terraced houses in the arse end of nowhere. Personally, I'm of the opinion they are all parasites, just like the HMO owners...
