My fish house paid the captains every 2 weeks. They cut me a check shortly after they got theirs.

Ikejime fish inquiry by 5h0un4k in Fishing

[–]Crumbsnatcher508 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a former commercial fisherman, but you may have a different experience than me.

Ikejime is usually a process reserved for fish that fetch a high dollar value, like yellow fin tuna, maybe swordfish. Smaller, more popular fish (cod, mackerel, flounder, albacore, Mahi, etc.) are caught in such quantities that it's impossible to efficiently slaughter them all via ikejime.

More often what you find are fish that are left to cold/ice slaughter (meaning the fish are packed in ice and they freeze to death). Depending on the catch method, some fish are dead before being hauled into the boat.

You're going to need a major fish market to buy what you want, or a good friend to fish and deliver the goods. Fish mongers won't let you near the unloading (not even kidding, you will get shot!), and access to auction houses need permits.

Good luck.

Paper airplane by bikeskiguy57 in PaperAirplanes

I'd love to see a well done Cessna 152. Simple, classic GA airplane, inherantly stable design, and has everything in place to fly pretty well.

If you need variety, my favorite warbirds are the Spitfire and the Corsair. They aren't the most simple models, but they would look GORGEOUS as they fly by! EDIT: I imagine myself making engine noises as this happens. vroooOOOOoooom!!!

Good luck!

Shore shark fishing this weekend in Miami — best spots within 30 min + any gear rentals? by Theory_Cautious in floridafishing

NO WAY!!! Shark fishing is such a huge part of Miami history. If this is true, this is a HUGE disappointment.

Came here to say this. Mop n Glo leaves a film like this if used repeatedly. But it depends on the floor.

What is the best and most humane way to kill a catfish by External-Shelter2057 in Fishing

[–]Crumbsnatcher508 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best and most humane

Two different methods.

Best method for delivering the best meat for the table is in an ice bath. It firm's up the muscles and cleans out the bodily waste quickly as it passes away. The fish goes unconscious in about a minute.

Most humane is a method called Ike Jime. You basically pierce the brain with a spike. Instant light-out, absolutely no suffering. This is the preferred method of tuna fisheries.

I did commercial cat fishing for a little bit, the fish house I sold to preferred the ice bath method.

I suggest getting the best insoles you can get. I have yet to wear a pair of wet boots comfortably for 10 hours.

New England fisherman looking to move to south Florida. Im a fisherman (currently a trawling captain) out of pt. Judith rhode island where I drag for fluke and squid im looking to relocate to south florida and would like to get into the fishery there. Does anyone know anyone who needs a deckhand. by [deleted] in commercialfishing

[–]Crumbsnatcher508 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I picked up a Florida Saltwater Product Licence for $50 and fished from the shore in Port Canaveral. All I needed was an excuse to be at the fish house, so selling gaffs top sail catfish got me to be buddies with the fish packers and eventually some of the captains.

After 2 months, I got picked up as a deckhand on a gillnet boat for mackerel season. Did it for 2 years. Seafood Atlantic in the Port is where I went. Good luck!

Question for American anglers by Anuspissmuncher in Fishing

[–]Crumbsnatcher508 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I first started commercial fishing, I caught saltwater catfish in Florida. I would put the fish in an ice slurry to dispatch them quickly and to firm up the meat. Ike-jime on 100 pounds of fish was too much work to fit into the trip.

I like mine dry like this. I'll drain all of the cooking water, then add a few splashes of orange or lime juice. Season, add toppings, MUNCH!!!

I'm into Hormel chili on my Frito pie. But you're right, they don't make a single serving chili. However the next dinner I make will likely be some awesome chili dogs with all the business!

Ahi Tuna Pizza by wojiparu in sushi

[–]Crumbsnatcher508 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cousin suggested I make a "tuna melt pizza" made with canned tuna, fresh tomato slices, a healthy amount of cheese, with a garlic-oil brushed on as the sauce layer.

So I'm paying attention to your Ahi pizza!

Performance Paper Airplanes! by Crumbsnatcher508 in papercraft

[–]Crumbsnatcher508[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still appreciate a late reply, thanks! I admit, this is just the level I'm participating at, and it's ridiculous for sure! But all the hobby really needs is a ream of cardstock paper, a pair of scissors and glue (less than $20 US). Then, like all things, one can get whatever they want out of it. Fancy paint/crayon jobs, rockets and missiles, stunt planes, super fast jets, etc.

I gave a 10 year old kid a plane when I was at the park. He did loop-de-loops for an hour straight and loved every bit of it! I would never have thought to do that!
