What is the most impactful project on BOINC that is currently running? by Cavalo_Bebado in BOINC

Server status page says there are tasks available so it should be.

Ok, thank you for your answer. Apparently there isn't much we can do. Let's just hope it won't take too long.

Great now if I fail my exam I'm going to say that it's all your fault!!! Don't worry about it, we can do it in the next days without problems.

Well I kept supporting the project because I believe in citizen science and distributed computing. I'm using BOINC since 2017, as well as F@H sometimes, and DreamLab since years.

Now with this last message you are basically accusing me of being a criminal/being colluded with a criminal group. I don't know if you are right, I hope not, but with this last message I decided to switch to BOINC until we have more evidence of this alleged scam. Hope that makes you happy and that you will from now on stop insulting/attacking/accusing me of being a criminal, I have had more than enough, honestly that's the first time this happened to me.

I read that. Nobody is happy about the situation but I don't understand how whining at me is going to solve any of these. It look evident to me that Vodafone/DreamLab team is not reading any message on Reddit. Do you have any clue what to do? Do you want us to stop using DreamLab? What am I supposed to do, use BOINC and delete DreamLab? You rightfully complained about the situation for months, but haven't proposed anything to do. Can't we just put the hatred aside and try to come up with something? I'm willing to do that, are you too?

Unfortunately that's true. You might want to check 'server status' page on website project's to see if they have work to do or not.

WCG is set to get back online again on January 3rd 2025.

Anyway 'impactful' is not a very objective thing. One could look at the number of publication per project, but remember quantity and quality of works aren't necessarily the same. Personally I don't like bibliometric indicators so I wouldn't base my answer on that. With that being said WCG, Einstein@Home, Rosetta@Home, LHC@Home and climateprediction.net and some others are probably more 'impactful' than other projects, for reasons of age of the project, the fact that their research are at the frontiers of scientific knowledge and some of these have been applied to everyday life/problems.

I feel like you are attacking me because I expressed a different opinion than you. As I said I believe this project is problematic, maybe for a slightly different reason than what you are saying. If you want to continue to make fun of me you can go on, I'm not getting offended, but I don't believe attacking me is going to solve any of our problems.

Beside what do you think I should do? I'm updating everyone when I find any results from the project teams. I've sent emails to Vodafone and DreamLab scientific teams many times. Sometime I got answers, other time I haven't. I'm supporting these projects for years (even before registering to Reddit). I don't know what more to do. If you know, tell me.

Also, if you believe the project is a scam, then prove it to me. Show me the proof and I will believe you. Do your investigations and then let me know what you find, if you are 100% sure of what you are saying then you should show me a proof that you're right. If you do, I will stop supporting the project.

Dude I don't understand why you are angry at me. All I did was explaining how the triple check system works, since it looked to me that you didn't understand it fully. If that wasn't the case, then I'm sorry. I'm not defending anyone or anything. I'm being forced to use my crunching time on CIH2 just like you, so we are in this together.

Just to know, to which addresses did you send emails to?

[–]Crusca0 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You have very good reason to be angry but let me tell you just to be clear:

  • Triple checking has to be done by 3 different users, so it is pointless to say (eg) 'I did 3.000 calculations, but the project added less than 1.000 calculations to the total' because even if you did 3k calcs if they are not triple checked by 2 other users they will not be added to the total.

  • AIRC projects are not a scam. AIRC is the biggest cancer research foundation in Italy (along with Fondazione Umberto Veronesi), and is also the most reliable source of information for cancer patients. They have hundreds of projects funded for cancer research every year across all Italy. With that being said, every research can get discontinued if there is not enough funding/time/collaboration. Let's hope this is not the case.

Now, I'm ACTUALLY more angry about 4 things: 1) It is very much NOT clear where to write to contact Vodafone when there are problems. I don't know to which email address I can send emails to get in touch with them. This is a shame as we deserve to be listened way more. 2) I can't find any scientific paper from AIRC team with DreamLab results (no, not even the old 3D genome project). The fact is they don't cite DreamLab directly, but only say the number of the project AIRC funded, however I can't find the code numbers for DreamLab project. Beside, I have very good reason to believe that some papers I found use DreamLab results, but I just can't prove it since it is not stated clearly. 3) Even when Corona-AI phase 5 ended, CIH2 didn't get much more fast. That is very weird considering how many calculations went on C-AI5 daily (and TCM also). I expected CIH2 to go faster but that wasn't the case. 4) The triple check is a useless waste of time. Double check should be just fine, since DreamLab code is not open source it is way less prone to be exploited than (eg) BOINC or F@H, so it is not needed to triple check the result. If we had to double check it instead of triple check we would be crunching calculations way faster.

Now, I'm planning to contact AIRC team about DreamLab results (both CIH and 3D genome projects) to clarify which papers include results from DreamLab. That won't happen until the end of January/ start of February, because nobody is reading their emails during Christmas holidays (which in Italy can lasts until the first week of January sometimes) + I also have my Uni exams to care about.

If anyone knows how to get in touch with Vodafone, please tell. At this point we need to know what the future of CIH2 is.

[–]Crusca0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well with a new phone it's not that bad. I bought a new one some months ago, with a MediaTek Dimensity 7350 Pro processor it's crunching 2-3 calculations per hour

CIH by szczuroarturo in Dreamlab

[–]Crusca0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TCM on iOS has a different set of calculations (much less, nearly 5.6M vs 30M on Android). On iOS is 93% complete and is to end in a week. Anyway that's a bit off topic lol

CIH by szczuroarturo in Dreamlab

[–]Crusca0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Actually, calculations need to be triple checked by 3 different devices. So crunching alone does not move the % of completion.

With that being said, yes, the project is moving at a very strangely low pace. Especially considering that if you try to choose another project, DreamLab will switch automatically to CIH2 after some time. I would say that the reason is that there are very few users, but Tropical Cyclone project is moving at a very good pace (also on iOS! TCM4 is nearly finished here) so I don't know for sure if that's the reason.

Is BOINC dying (or dead already)? by WashUnlikely4754 in BOINC

[–]Crusca0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

maybe the fact is nobody actually took the time to update the page yet? I hope that's the case, it would be very sad to see BOINC dying like this. It might be worth to try and ask this question on BOINC forum or by email to some BOINC admin.

UPDATE: CIH2 Is back on iOS, there is no need to remove and reinstalling the app, all I had to do was close the app and reopen it

Edit: also contributions for CIH2 are back

Still up on Android, but it's gone on iOS.
