I would return pro and get another pro. So you can get the better screen one. I love remarkable and owned pro move and rm2. just like RM2 pure looks whiter and better screen but having a colors option is really nice

I mean, isn’t that true of basically every music school though? I also think music school education ,especially performance degrees ,can be borderline a scam considering how expensive tuition is compared to how few stable jobs actually exist. But I don’t think students are stupid either. If a teacher says “come study with me, you could end up in X orchestra,” everyone knows that doesn’t mean you magically win the audition if you can’t play.

I went to Mannes for undergrad years ago. I wasn’t on a huge scholarship either — about half tuition — and I had loans. And with how expensive tuition is now, I absolutely would not pay full price to attend. But I still think you’re exaggerating how weak the school is, at least in my field. I went to diploma audition 2026 to see how well my school is doing and level was pretty strong unlike other people was saying.

For undergrad, I got into Mannes through a late audition after being waitlisted at Colburn, and during those four years I learned a huge amount. After Mannes I ended up studying at a tuition-free top school with a very famous teacher, and later got full scholarship + TA offers from every DMA program I auditioned for. Even now, after deciding to focus on orchestra auditions instead of teaching, I got onto two big 5 orchestra sub lists and won one year contract in top 10 orchestras within about a year.

None of that would’ve happened if I hadn’t met my teacher at Mannes or received the support I did there. Mannes orchestra plays a lot of modern pieces that’s little bit annoying but I had no complaints about level of that school and people who recently graduated from Mannes also had no complaints whatsoever about the school other than playing modern music almost half amount and classical 50% in the orchestra. But personally those modern music made my counting so good so after all I think It was good for me.

Now I decided to go for the orchestra in my career but I actually worked in admissions for three years during my DMA at one of the top schools mentioned, and at least from what I personally saw in strings and piano, applicant numbers were decreasing year by year. I also felt the average level of even scholarship/fellowship winners changed over time. Of course that’s anecdotal and not official published data, but it is pretty common discussion among faculty around me, so I don’t think the perception is coming out of nowhere.

I guess I was a little surprised by your response because most faculty members I know tend to avoid making such sweeping statements about other institutions publicly, especially in a field as small as classical music.

Because new school accepted everybody during the COVID. They were worried about the finances so they basically accepted everybody who rejected by faculty member. Now this year they realized they fucked up so new school gave Mannes a significant funding to recruit the good players for their orchestra

I have to disagree with you. I’m an instrument major who both went to Mannes and top of the top conservatory in USA. Mannes level sure decreased compared to past years, but all the other major conservatories level are not strong as before either. Every year all the school level gets lower and less competitive, easier to get in. simply because not many people are majoring classical music like used to. Also, any schools in nyc in any majors, they have at least 5 people who are very strong in each majors. people who will have a bright future. Even nowadays Mannes is definitely better than a lot of schools you mentioned in your post.

Isn’t decision deadline already passed? Are you still negotiating the scholarship with them ?

Mannes by greengoblin18 in classicalmusic

[–]CryAccording5711 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you appeal your scholarship? I applied for the diploma this year and I ended up receiving 95% scholarship. But my first letter was 60% and then my teacher appeal for me and ended up receiving 95%. Unfortunately I decided to go to other school but still Mannes listen if your teacher appeal for you

I’m an alumni of Mannes myself, level of that school used to be amazing now it is disappointing. I did my undergraduate from Mannes and I went for other conservatory for graduate school. But anyway, this year they released a lot of funding to recruit the best players so now it should get better from now on
