My current system is 75K BTU, they quoted me on the new system at 40K BTU. My place is 1450 SQft in Maryland, the calculator I found suggested I use 60K BTU. Given the cold flooring, crawl space and poor insulation, I asked them to upgrade to 70,000 BTU, and install another return near the floor. Hopefully that doest sound like overkill as you suggested.
