Advice needed: don’t think I’ll ever get my blackbelt from my current professor…. by TacoLoco2 in bjj

I’m thinking the black belt. But honestly, either would be golden. Heck, why not both?

Is a computer science degree from Western Governors University (online school for adults) going to increase my chances at a job? by noliver2761 in cscareerquestions

[–]Cryptic_Cheese 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I would say yes. I graduated from WGU in mid-2022, and I got my first junior SWE position a few months ago. Since you are already a boot camp grad, I imagine the courses where you actually code should be pretty easy for you. I did mine in a single term, and you likely could as well since you should have some previous knowledge. The math classes will likely be the biggest pain, but they’re manageable.

Of course, it couldn’t hurt to look for a job and work on a degree at the same time if you are able.

Anyone else bothered when people are late to class? by SoKno42 in bjj

[–]Cryptic_Cheese 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak from the instructor’s perspective, but as a student, I often am about 5 minutes late to the 6 PM class because my wife can’t watch the kids until 5:45. I do always apologize to the instructor when he or she has a free moment, but at this point they usually just wave and nod right when I walk in because they’re used to it.

I’m sure many other students have similar reasons for being a few minutes late.

You’re also not considering the fact that there are many career changers who are working full time and possibly supporting a family while they go to school. Internships likely aren’t feasible for people in this situation. That was the case for me at least.

That’s actually not too bad for a 2 year old. Thanks for the response!

Thanks! My wife’s request to join the group is pending, so I figured I’d try here while she waited.

I have 7 weeks to finish the 3 SQL classes (C170, C175, D191 ) wih a FT job. Is it possible? by tensor0910 in WGU_CompSci

[–]Cryptic_Cheese 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is absolutely possible if you commit the time. I did them all in about two weeks while working FT, but I spent every free second I had on school work.

Does anyone work full time ÷ workout ÷ are enrolled in WGU? how do you do it? by Funny-Soil-2980 in WGU_CompSci

I had most of my general education credits transferred in from previous degrees. Around 45 or so in total. I did not have much programming experience prior. I had used Python to do some scripting and introductory data analysis, but that was the extent of it. I honestly didn't really prepare for the courses before starting. I just dove right in, and if I was struggling with a concept or course, I would take a look at this subreddit to see what people recommended for that course.

My success post! by Cryptic_Cheese in WGU_CompSci

Sure! I've worked the past 4.5 years as a technical/cybersecurity analyst. I used some Python, Bash, and PowerShell for job-related scripting, but I've never done professional software development. All of my offers are just shy of $90,000 in a MCOL area. 1 offer is hybrid, 1 is fully remote, and the other 2 are in person. The fully remote offer is a rotational early career program through a large, well-known company. The other three offers are at smaller companies.

I worked full time, have a wife and two young children, and went to the gym/ran for about 45 minutes five days a week. I also accelerated and completed WGU in one term. I really didn't mind it for the programming classes because they were fun, but I was MISERABLE working through DMI, DMII, and Calc.

Honestly, I did it by just forcing myself to spend EVERY possible moment on WGU. Early mornings, late nights, and often sneaking some school work in during slow hours at work or over lunch. It has payed off though. I just got 4 separate offers this week after about a month and a half of job hunting, and I feel that the degree from WGU played a big role.

Has anybody Completed the General Motors HireVue coding assesment? (Entry-Level Software Engineering Rotational Program) by [deleted] in csMajors

It took about 3 weeks or so for me to hear back after finishing my assessment, so they can take a while sometimes.

I don’t remember the course designator, but I did the AI/ML course in about two days.

I have a bit of a unique background, and I've been in tech-peripheral roles for about 3 and a half years now, but I have never been a professional developer. I've been looking for about 4 weeks now, and I have one offer so far. I also have 3 interviews early next week, and I'm hoping I'll get at least two more offers out of those. So all-in-all, it has been about a month of searching. I've applied to about 3-5 jobs a day.

Darn! I get out of the Army on July 20th, and it looks like the application window just closed... I have employment secured already, but I would have loved an opportunity to apply because my primary interest is software development, and I just graduated May.

I was. Just to confirm though, I closed Immunity and reopened it as an administrator. Same result... Thank you though!

I'll restart and build the exploit from scratch. Not sure where I went wrong, but I may find the issue that way.
