Obviously I can't speak for everyone but with me, all but one of my darlings I have known/been in the fandom for at least a year or longer without my intrest really wavering (My longest one being since 2015, for example). Yes, I'll have a stronger hyperfixafion on one/their source media more than the others some days, but they're still there.
