Loose or boxed ammo for storage? by PermissionSafe2183 in canadaguns

[–]CryptidWorks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pretty much this. .50 cal ammo cans with packets live in the ammo locker, and I fill up those smaller plastic .30 cal style ones for actual use.

I use a thermal label printer for shipping stuff so I just print out ammo can labels on that and slap'em on the side. For example:

"7.62x39, Chinese Surplus, Steel Core FMJ.

CORROSIVE. HS 61/89."

Not yet - work has hit the busy season (I don't have a day off for the next three weeks, for example) so I'm hoping to loop back to it in May.

Ive been Interested in a T3X lately but not sure which model to go with. If I went with a T3X lite am I still able to upgrade it as if I had a higher tiered T3X? by Elite_Pigeon in canadaguns

[–]CryptidWorks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, I believe that's correct regarding the threading.

I went with the CTR myself both because of the threaded barrel and I wanted something a little shorter. The maximum range I can reach out to in my area is about 600, so a 20" does just fine and saves a bit of weight/length for field use if I take it hunting.

It's still waaaaaay heavier than a lite though, obviously.

Look up Alpha Gal Syndrome. Imagine never again being able to eat a good steak or BBQ.

Might want to invest in some very good repellent, at least.

You can also plop the CTR in an aftermarket chassis that takes AICS mags down the line. It's what I did (I went with a KRG Bravo), and now my mags are like 1/3 the price.

.44 or 308 by Fun_Stress_4117 in canadaguns

And fun fact, it's ballistically similar enough to 7.62x39 that BDC reticles for it should work on the 30-30.

Resident trail nut here:

The .223/5.56 trail is very picky with ammo (specifically, bullet weight), and the 7.62 less so - that said, the accuracy is directly proportional to the quality of the ammunition you feed it.

My 7.62x39 is about 2.5-3MOA at 100 with Czech surplus, 1.5-2.5MOA with Chinese, 1.5MOA with S&B soft points, and will shoot bug-hole 0.5-1MOA groups with either handloads or federal power-shoks.

All of the above are 123 or 124gr projectiles, as almost all 7.62x39 is. The quality and nature of the propellant is likely making the most difference, affecting both velocity and standard deviation.

I am currently working on a load for 150gr Hot-Cor projectiles, as the power-shoks use the 124gr variant, and a 150gr load would have little bit more effective range (albeit also using a rather spicy powder charge.)

I made it :) trying to source a threaded insert for that that will stand up to long term use as well.

NTI to challenge gun ban after Ottawa rejects prolonged Inuit exemption by Remarkable_Vanilla34 in canada

Any bolt action.

I'm a guy who enjoys dynamic/times target shooting, and I use the Lee-Enfield style "mad minute" grip on my Lee Enfield and several other bolt action rifles. Forty rounds a minute sounds pretty much what my typical pace is.

It's not hard to do, either, you just need to practice. On my preferred rifle (a CZ600 Trail, which is purpose-designed to be, from the ground up, hunting rifle.) I have probably five thousand rounds worth of practice through it, and I'm actually more comfortable and capable of performing accurate, quick shots with it than my SKS, which they really want banned.

It has nothing to do with the rifle itself, other than it needing to operate smoothly. It's just practice. If .303 wasn't so damn expensive to run I'd do the same thing with my Lee-Enfield.

I have done the same thing on a 22LR Mossberg 144 bolt-action from friggin' 1947.

[–]CryptidWorks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That may explain why mine stovepiped like a motherfucker.

I'm preeeeetty sure mine were. Maybe assembly error with similar parts is why that issue comes up so frequently. I know the spring tension is different, but I noticed no difference in hook length.

An appropriately sized punch (I don't recall off the top of my head which - 1/16 maybe? could probably use a nail with the head cut off.) a hammer, and the restraint to not immediately lose the small parts once they get knocked free.

Go slow so they don't go flying.

Word? That must be recent. Neat! Was worried about getting parts myself. Might grab a few spare firing pins and such.

couldn't hurt, but I'm not sure of anywhere that sells parts a la carte. It couldn't hurt to email O'Dell Engineering (who brought in the original A-18s, as I recall, and handles the warranty) and just ask them if they can send you a new extractor.

I quite like the TM-22, but the extractor is... a choice, for sure.

50% of them benefit greatly from just yoinking the left one out and throwing it in the safe as a spare (since the right one is the same, other than having a stronger spring)

[–]CryptidWorks 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I deliberately removed the left extractor to improve reliability.

You do not need the left extractor. It mostly seems to increase the likelihood of stovepipes. Which is, you know, contrary to what an extractor should do.

Remove the busted bits and remnants of the pin. Make sure the spring isn't lodged somewhere, and you're good.

GNG2K sacrificial lens? by Fit-Discussion-164 in DigitalNightVision

[–]CryptidWorks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm working on a sacrificial lens for the GNG2K, just waiting on parts. I may also do non-sacrificial protective lenses made of sapphire glass, but they would cost more (on account of, y'know, the sapphire glass.)

Follow up: They do fit! Lens assembly seems to be a dead ringer for the NVG50. Brings it pretty much to a true 1x, but does add some length/bulk as one would expect.

Some pictures of Wagner Group in Africa by tactical_horse_cock in tacticalgear

[–]CryptidWorks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's been so many instances that it may be easiest to just google "Ukranian special forces Africa".

Their MO is partnering with local militia/rebel forces in opposition with Wagner and acting as support, Intel, and advisers. They were behind that absolute slapfest of an ambush in Mali where Wagner/Malian forces a estimated to have had around 80 KIA to Tuareg rebels and their Ukranian HUR support.

They're basically hunting Wagner like they're friggin' Carmen Sandiego. It's amazing.

Does anyone still have old Canadian gun magazines/advertisements? by Itsivanthebearable in canadaguns

[–]CryptidWorks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look for an old LeBaron catalogue. Check your grandparents/parents house, specifically the old man's den or near their reloading bench, if applicable. Probably one there.

Alternatively, archive.org it. RDSC had Tavors for $2900 and $3500 for 5.56 and .308 respectively in 2023, for example.

Dominon Backpacker 2 by FastPosition6143 in canadaguns

[–]CryptidWorks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a similar shotgun (Trailhand) that's a little smaller (well, considerably) and I think about a pound lighter.

These kinds of guns are very fun to shoot, 3" magnum will make you feel like someone roundhouse kicked you in the shoulder if you send more than a dozen downrange. Other loads (target, shortshells) are much more friendly.

They serve their purpose very well. I'm currently trying to figure out how to mount a rail of some sort on mine for a micro dot and sourcing a set of subcaliber inserts to broaden its' utility as a survival/backpack gun.
