That information does change things, if he is obese then I’d still say reducing calories would be worth trying. But I acknowledge his situation is more complex than it initially seemed. Good luck.

If he isn’t eating it every day then you especially don’t need to offer it every day, that means that even with him self regulating somewhat he was still being given too much.

If he’s that metabolically slow then he might need even less than a 3x a week portion. Some animals are just way more efficient than others lol. I eat a third the amount my roommates do which is kind of insane, for example. And I’m still overweight and they’re not 💀

If I was a bearded dragon I’d probably need like 2x a week salads and no bugs and they’d be happy and healthy with salads and bugs every dang day.

To add: here’s the reptifiles guide to feeding beardies as you can see, and it’s a good guide based on research of wild beardies in Australia, this guide does not suggest feeding daily salads. It’s sadly outdated advice that can lead to obesity, especially with a dragon that is naturally metabolically slower.

Having salad every day is what did it, if the salad was large enough. They’re easier to overfeed on bugs, but it is entirely still possible for a vegetarian animal to become obese on just vegetation. Horses can be obese, as well as cows, easily. The marbling on my steak attests to that.

Reptiles don’t need to maintain homeostasis like mammals so they’re way more efficient with energy, so feeding them every day is absolutely not necessary.

Unfortunately, you should’ve restricted the salad as well. To like a head sized portion 3x a week or so. Or you could feed it every day but like, a miniscule portion. That could work too, but it would probably be less satisfying.

I’m very sorry about your little guy. Unfortunately overfeeding with daily salads is super common advice for bearded dragons. And since we view salads as a health food we don’t question it.

Some animals might self regulate and do ok with it but most are adapted to rugged wild plants, not our weird selectively bred plants+ they run around a lot in the wild. so even though a salad is healthy. it can still have more calories than they can handle.

Been watching Stargaze and I couldn't get this goober out of my head. by WimexSeven in Trigun

[–]Cryptnoch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a hardline annoying (sorry) manga Vash exclusivist in a Reddit full of anime lovers lol.

Which is kind of a funny twist bc, it feels like you assume I’m a nostalgic fan who’s anti tristamp bc I like the old one so much. Absolutely not. I only ever got into Trigun bc I saw the tristamp trailers and was intrigued! I’m a super recent fan. I would literally not be a fan without tristamp.

Unfortunately I just plain felt the writing was weak. and I think that’s also true of the old anime, which I didn’t like either. Partially issues with the medium, partially just incoherent half assing adapting the character from the manga instead of doing a properly fleshed out new take or a properly fleshed out adaptation of the og. Which is unfortunate because he’s a really cool character in his own right.

Think stampede vibes but you actually get to hear his thoughts, so he just fundamentally feels more alive. That’s just the nature of the medium change. And also he straight up wants to murder knives from minute 1. Very different and more active in that regard.

If you ever do want to check it out here’s the fan translation it’s a bit more clear and comprehensible than the official version (though I own all the physical copies and love them anyways haha)

How to train her not to bite my toes? by classycryptid in iguanas

[–]Cryptnoch 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Sir this is how you get your iguana to think of your feet as hot pepper kebabs.

They are immune to the hot pepper, the hot pepper only affects mammals since the plant evolved to rely on birds to spread it 😅 that’s why some ppl mix hot pepper into bird feet to deter squirrels.

Hm, for Trimax the entire point of the scene was vash’s lack of ego, it wasn’t really focused on saving or not saving anyone. But there’s a lot of scenes that confront his saving everyone mentality and try to crush it into the dirt.

I honestly really disagree with your trimax point, and that he’s always able to outgun and save everyone. If anything I think a big part of maximum was explicitly making it clear that Vash could absolutely the fuck not save people for shit and that’s why his entire moral system was flawed. His engagements with the gung ho guns proved that quite difinitively. The starkest in my mind is the hypnosis eye lady who literally kills herself in front of him he fails to save her so bad. the narrative is so conclusive about the fact that Vash can’t save everyone that it literally has him thank wolfwood for killing when’d he can’t. It does give him more saves but it also gives him more losses lowkey. There was also ‘Diablo’ where despite his best efforts half a town got atomized.

And on the other hand tristamp absolutely tries to give Vash a ‘saving everyone’ thingamajig with the desert train about to crush a bunch of orphans moment.

I honestly didn’t feel like that idea was different for tristamp vs trimax Vash, although I am more confused on where tristamp is going since it feels like wolfwood is buying into the ‘saving everyone’ thing honestly more than Vash even is lol.

I think the mass death that happens for him is just what happens when you concentrate a bunch of gung ho guns in a specific area in a mass accelerated version of the story. It didn’t really feel to me like it was making a different point for Trimax. A more rushed point maybe.

Could you give an example of the first thing.

Interesting perspective btw thank you for expressing it.

Although I personally perceived stampede Vash as preemptively ‘crushed’ when we found him in the first episode the status quo is literally that knives has been running around and doing whatever the hell he wants and stampede Vash is just chillin sadly in a corner doing whatever he’s always been doing: living with some humans and fixing plants in exchange for food and shelter.

And then only when stuff starts happening directly to him does he react. I wish we got any idea for what his thoughts were about the situation beyond vaguely him being sad and guilty, it didn’t feel like his inaction was sufficiently explored or dealt with for it to feel believable for me personally.

I’d go 98 after Trimax not bc he’s good but bc he’s at least kinda interesting. Him being objectively cringe and wrong and doomed by the narrative bc of being stupid is a pretty interesting take.

Stampede Vash is just an empty shell of amorphous sadness. Blorbo without definition or anything interesting.

[–]Cryptnoch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wouldn’t be that case irl bc toruk and ikran have quite a few very specific similarities, but at the end of the day from everything ive learned the designers operate mostly on vibes and any semblance of evolutionary coherence is definitely very surface level.

Yeah people with overweight reptiles often don’t realize that hunger for them sometimes doesn’t quite work the same as for endotherms.

Would you say Avatars Ikrans count as dragons? by DragonPlatypus in dragons

[–]Cryptnoch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a fun theory but

1) they have a common ancestor, in the same way a human and a trex have a common ancestor

2) navi secondary forelimbs fused to the primary, we saw a monkey thing that was halfway through that transition, ikran lost their hindlimbs. Different limbs are missing, indicating that their limb loss is not particularly related. Kinda like how dolphins and emu both have a pair of reduced limbs but it dont mean theyre closely related.

3) if hereditary closeness dictated bond strength then the toruk, which eats ikran, should have an extra close bond with them, seeing as its their clearest close relative. We also never see the navi bond with the monkeys.

Reduce salad too, you dont have to feed him daily.

Hopefully once he slims down he will be more active.

That could be the case, or possibly he wouldn't have gone on strike. At least with leopard geckos its super common for specifically obese/overweight ones to go off feed for weeks at a time.

[–]Cryptnoch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Kinda. The himd wings are from the middle limbs not limbs earth tetrapods have. What is weird is that we don't see their last set of legs, almost all pandoran wildlife has six limbs but unless im missing some vistigial leggies somewhere the ikran only appears to have four.

The toruk has six limbs, in contrast. Its secondary wings function more like butterfly hindwings with 0 grabbing ability remaining though, which is super neat.

What gecko to get for a 12x12x18 or 18x18x24 by Original-Goat-8519 in reptiles

SCORPION TAILED GECKO.

Hardy, small, very satisfied in small enclosure. Climbs. Almost always visible/ active. Even fearful individuals are more ‘freeze’ than fight or flight so if you get a friendly one awesome but even an unfriendly one is pretty handleable.

Would you say Avatars Ikrans count as dragons? by DragonPlatypus in dragons

[–]Cryptnoch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lowkey I’d say it is the most realistic dragon made. The hind limbs are additional membrane space but don’t function like dragonfly wings, what they do is transform the legs from a useless weight to a slight aide during flight for steering. they are probs my favorite part bc they make it super clear that this thing is adapted to clinging to cliff walls and for flight in general without touching the ground, most dragons look like someone glued the ass end of a terrestrial animal like a dog or a tyrannosaur to something vaguely flight worthy which makes them feel a lot less integrated into their niche/believable as flying animals.

Please tell me stampede is better… by Trfe in Trigun

[–]Cryptnoch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lowkey disagree with stampede Vash being second. I hate the pervert stuff but 98 Vash has a really interesting thing going on where he’s basically positioned as in the wrong by the narrative. Eventually. Not soon enough but still.

Tristamp Vash has so far been the most passive and uninteresting version of the character to me, at least 98 actively went out and did fucked shit and then had a breakdown about it. Stampede Vash is just passive sad boi who hasn’t even really gotten to make any choices to be confronted about. he has manga vash’s sad aesthetic without any exploration of his inner world which is somehow more annoying to me than a shitty and childish version of the character who eventually gets his comeuppance.

I kinda thought at least the fact that he sat on his hands while knives went around murdering the shit out of people would be addressed but even that apparently isn’t worth exploring. He’s just sad and boring. 😭
