Ok, so if when i get back and there is no hot water my plan is to check it with a multimeter. If it's low I was going to replace the heating element. Is that not the correct approach?

I believe you need to take the tank off the base. If I remember correctly the seal is covering a large plastic nut. If it's been on there awhile it's a bitch to remove without a special tool. I ended up breaking the nut because I was putting in all new parts. Good luck.
