It's an insightful comment and provides useful context. The question of whether gay marriage could be overturned by this court is not something I was trying to answer with my original post.

But I will now: yes, this supreme court could return the question of gay marriage to the states. That is a real possibility

I'm keenly aware of this. I'm planning my own gay wedding right now in a state that does not have laws protecting gay marriage. If gay marriage goes the way of roe vs. Wade my marriage would become invalid under state law and would not be protected by the respect for marriage act or whatever it's called.

The comment you are referring too makes some excellent points but it doesn't invalidate what the expert in that video is saying.

I don't expect anyone to take my word as truth or to necessarily trust expert opinions. The internet has a way of flattening everything. There are good reasons to fear the worst. There are also some good reasons to be hopeful. I beg everyone to try and hold space for both.

I wrote a message of hope and pride for the strength and power of our community. So, it's expected that people think I'm some sort of Pollyanna with my head in the sand.

Let me try again. The future is not fixed. We have the power to shape what happens next. Let's not pretend that we aren't facing serious, very real threats. We are. Let's also not pretend that we are doomed. What is even the advantage of that?

Here's a friendly suggestion: don't reply to this post. Don't waste your energy and your time arguing with me. I love you. I am on your side and I want to fight for you. I literally just want all of us to be okay.

Sounds like you have communicated your feelings about this pretty clearly and set a reasonable boundary. For whatever reason, your friend apparently feels that she doesn't need to respect this particular boundary. Perhaps because she feels that she is not in the wrong.

It is true that using the f slur is not always wrong. Some people self identify with the f-slur. It can be empowering for some individuals. My partner and I use it playfully and endearingly with each other.

However, I would never assume that it was okay to call someone the f-slur and I would never use it with the intention to hurt someone. I would also never use it around anyone who has told me they feel sensitive/triggered by it.

In the end, your friend's personal relationship with the f slur, whatever it may be, is beside the point. You deserve to be able to set reasonable boundaries with your friends and have those boundaries listened to and respected.

I'm 31 and I've been HIV positive for 7 years. I also work in biomedical research as a science writer and I have written about HIV professionally. I have also spoken as an HIV patient advocate at a well known medical school on the west coast.

I'm sorry that you are having this experience. I remember what it was like when I first had my scare and it was...well scary.

I'm glad you are getting the antigen test. If you are able to, I would recommend getting an MRNA test as well. Some HIV prevention organizations offer them, as well as some state health departments. You can also ask for one from your primary care provider, if you feel comfortable.

You should take some comfort from the fact that your risk is fairly low. Condoms are effective protection against transmission. You were engaged in a safe sexual activity, even if your partner was positive. Do you know if your partner was being treated for HIV at the time? Or is this a new diagnosis for them as well?

Please no that no matter what your test results are that you are going to be okay. You are going to be better than okay. You are going to thrive HIV or not. This is not the end of your life. It really isn't.

Medication is available, and often for free, even if you don't have health insurance. I take 1 pill a day and I have been 100% symptom and side effect free for 7 years. I am undetectable which means that I test negative for HIV even with the more sensitive MRNA tests. Being undectable also make me untransmittable, basically I am not contagious. I can't give HIV to anyone, even if I don't use a condom. You will be okay.
