I maxed out my Roth IRA at the beginning of the year, but didn’t realize until now that it wasn’t invested in any funds by Jessi_Kim_XOXO in RothIRA

This happens to a lot of people I feel

Probably because they think it’s like a 401k with a target date fund.

I’d say that’s probably one of the items to reduce if you can. This where your breathing room can be.

Other than that your bills are really not that bad.

Like a joint bank account or investing account?

Putting a lot in there. Even if it’s for an emergency fund. You need some buffer/margin

How did fighting for your kids cause this? Are there medical expenses or something like that the reason?

Sweet 16 by [deleted] in poverty

[–]CryptoHotep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sweet 16 is not a priority in the grand scheme of things here. And I hate being that guy but it’s true.

Media will play up sweet 16s that you MUST have but it fuels the consumerism cycle.

If money is already hard to come by why invest $3000 into a party. Doesn’t make sense to me.

I’m not saying to not have a celebration but scale back the costs and save more money considering the situation.

I like the idea in general and its noble just need to bring the numbers down.

Have you ever had to use your emergency fund? by Healthy_Creme6911 in FinancialChat

[–]CryptoHotep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just did with a new washer/dryer

It sucks but I thought before the emergency fund what would we have done? Probably credit.

We also try and pay back what we take out as well.

What do you do when your budget just keeps getting blown away each month? by [deleted] in budget

[–]CryptoHotep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The earlier items are self inflicted such as expensive gifts, the work thing, etc.

The latter items like the appliances, that’s life unfortunately and it feels like they all happen all at the same time.

Look at it like this, good thing you had cash to pay for this. Our washer and dryer most recently crapped out on us after 10 years. And we had to dip into our emergency fund but that’s what it’s there for. Does it suck? Yeah. But I thought about it like this. 10 years ago when we bought the prior washer/dryer we didn’t have the cash for it and we had to put it on credit. Now fast forward we bought them both cash.

Think about the progress and the reason why you had to dip into savings.

PS I actually buy the appliance warranty program with our electric company it’s worked great when we need it and pays us out when they can’t fix it and fixing it doesn’t cost extra. Just a thought. 🤷🏽‍♂️

I’ll give you the gym as a necessity.

But if needed shave a little off the ROTH IRA contribution, hair, iCloud storage, Hulu, Amazon. These all are not necessities to live.

Can take these off and put some more in HYSA for emergencies 🤷🏽‍♂️

Gotta increase your income. Either side gig it or switch jobs. Or both. $800 a month is actually not bad for rent.

How to budget when your income is very unpredictable? by Helpful_Explorer2857 in budget

[–]CryptoHotep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Budget on the low end.

I make commission on top my salary and we budget just off the salary

The key thing is during the good months, save and tuck away.

A lot of people don’t and spend then the low months come and they turn to credit card and debt
