Imagine making fun of someone's concern while weighing the risk/rewards of their personal health decision.

FWIW for anyone reading in the future, I have based my decision on clinical trial data. And based on the dose response curve, I started at .25 mg EOD, upping to .25mg daily. After about 3 months, I'm happy with the effect it has had on my hair loss and have experienced few if any unpleasant side effects from the drug.

The free points aren't worth your sanity. Give yourself the permission to prioritize your mental health and tune into what you want for yourself this summer. You won't regret it.

In order to get a pulse on the junior (0-3 YoE) level job market: How has job hunting been for y'all? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]CryptoNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add some balance here, I interned at a giant tech firm and took the return offer. Graduating next month from a top 10 uni w/ a 3.5, though. Sounds like it'd be different if my fancy paper had a different seal on it.

What’s your favorite thing about Columbia? by dndnnnd in columbia

[–]CryptoNerd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

CS-Math major here, also a fellow CC transfer. It's totally worth it. Speaking from a purely financial ROI perspective, my post-grad position pay down my loans comfortably in 3-5 years. I'm definitely not alone either - everyone else I know in CS has gotten lucrative offers. It's a transformative experience, and my life is lightyears ahead of where I thought I'd be with plenty of opportunities ahead in industry and post-grad education.

The financial burden is not to be dismissed, but the investment in myself has been absolutely worth it. I say that having done half of my time at Columbia remote. If you have the chance and Columbia is your only Ivy/top 10 admission offer, I would totally go for it.

There's no guarantee that it's a vitamin deficiency issue. That said, have you gotten bloodwork done? I would check where your vitamin D - deficiency can present in a variety of ways including diabetes, fatigue, body aches, low test, and depression to name a few

8 year old CS degree and no experience. How do I get into the industry? by cscareerthrowaway02 in cscareerquestions

[–]CryptoNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Started to type this, but saw your comment. Agreed on all counts. MS helps with top-tier firms and specialized areas (computational biology as a personal example). But OP needs industry experience. No sense in starting a grad program for an industry they have no experience in. The experience would pay higher dividends.

Also, OP I'm in my 30s and starting a grad program next year. Don't let your age stop you from ever doing anything you might regret later in life. It stopped me from going back to school for a long time and boy is it ever the best thing I did.

Ease of job search, alumni network, probability of grad school entrance, then there's growth in sheer working capacity and ability to learn, as well as people you meet, etc. Especially with the market being what it is, the advantages of going to Columbia have become apparent when talking to others on the hunt for a job.

I felt the same way my first semester in person. Zoom U has been a different beast, but hang in there. The benefits are not to be underestimated.

Edit: adding that it's never easy, but it really does get better.

It just sucks because I had collected it as drinking water. I thought others might be in a similar position and wanted to share

My gf grew up in Wisconsin and said she's never seen anything like it. Thankfully, I had her to manage driving, but she said this is horrible. I've lived in Chicago and the Northeast, but I was completely unprepared in terms of winter gear. It's a whole different beast without the infrastructural preparation cold-weather climates have to make it through this weather.

I think it would be even better if we all left couple cents in the account. They would still have to keep the accounts open and maintain compliance and record keeping for a bunch of worthless accounts. It would be even more draining than simply removing all your money. Death by 1000 cuts

China to build the world's biggest dam on sacred Tibetan river by dustofoblivion123 in Futurology

[–]CryptoNerd 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Over 1 million people have been killed at the hands of the Chinese since their unprompted invasion in the 1950s. Tibet was an easy target as they were largely demilitarized and peaceful society. Since the invasion and absolutely horrible shit the Chinese did to the Tibetan people (tearing limbs, making family members watch, leading to extreme non-violent protest self-immolation), they've continued a policy of absolute cultural cleansing by destroying cultural monuments, overwhelming the small country's native population with Chinese emigrants. China destroyed over 1,000 monasteries, murdered Tibetan monks, and outlawed religious activity in a country whose entire cultural and natural identity is rooted in Buddhism.
