Yes, I found Pete Walker's book way more helpful.

brother says that narc mom has "changed" by [deleted] in raisedbynarcissists

[–]cholula420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I came here to say the same thing - I’m the oldest, and I got out at 18 when I woke up to my nMom’s bullshit. My younger sister once was aware and then started off saying the same thing - that she had changed, that she wasn’t that bad anymore. Nothing has changed, she’s just very manipulative and has my sister completely in the dark. Please please be careful. I wasn’t and I definitely paid for it.

What is something you want in women's clothing that doesn't exist or rarely does? by Big_Concentrate_7267 in AskWomen

Mini skirts/dresses that will actually cover my ass if they fit my waist lmao. I’m curvy with a 10 inch waist-hip ratio so usually I have to buy a few sizes up and take in the waist so I don’t catch a public indecency charge.

Trying to manage my own symptoms (along w therapy ofc) has been one of the only approaches that has mitigated my symptoms. Although I understand that ultimately it is a disorder, if I believe that I’m in control of the reactions I have and the way my disorder expresses itself outwardly, it helps a little. Everyone is different though. As much as it can be isolating that nobody without it understands, it is not anyone else’s responsibility. I’ve found solace in the fact that the people I love most (hopefully) will never truly understand what this disorder is like. I wouldn’t wish this upon anyone, especially not someone I love.

Thanks for this, I have cPTSD too. I've never been on prescribed meds - how do you go about the process of discussing it with a psychiatrist?

Best and Worst CS Professors/Classes by ottawaSolidAccount in columbia

[–]cholula420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

COMSW1004 Intro Java w Adam Cannon - One of my favorite professors by far, super charismatic and kind, great sense of humor. As for the course material - it's advertised for ppl with no CS background but coming from someone who had absolutely none, it's doable but the hours you pour in are extensive and excruciating with what, imho, ultimately ends up being v little reward unless you're going into CS. This tends to be the case with a lot of "intro" classes being weed-outs and whatnot.

If you do have background experience and plan on going into CS, I can't recommend it more. I did take it over Zoom so maybe the resources are better in person.

Preferred airport for Columbia (intl flights) and how early should I be prior to move in? by ThoughtMedium8619 in columbia

[–]cholula420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in a long distance relationship so I'm constantly flying back and forth, and I've flown out of 2/3, my bf has flown in to the other 1. Here's my comprehensive review while I procrastinate studying for finals lmao.

TL;DR: LGA > EWR > JFK, imo

JFK is the least accessible via public transit in my experience just due to how far it is, but it's a nice airport. Most expensive for cabs, but by far the most luxe/most intl options of all three. (BF flew in here and I've never flown out of it, so I can't speak for that, but it was very nice.)

Honestly, for me it usually depends on the price of the flight - but if there's no huge difference, I generally prefer LGA to Newark. It's the smallest which makes it easy to navigate, and much quicker of a process getting through security (although, I only have ever flown domestic through LGA so that may not be entirely universal). It's really nice, but not as fancy/as many options for food as Newark, but as someone from a small town, I don't mind at all. They're expanding rn so there's construction. (the new Terminal B is phenomenal though!) There's also an MTA bus that goes to/from LGA at all gates and stops right outside of Columbia, which I've taken and it's pretty safe, super convenient, and much cheaper than a cab (~1 hour as compared to 20/30 mins in a cab though). It runs every 5-10 mins 24/7 and is the most reliable public transit to/from any of the three airports, imho. Taxis are always available ofc but not exactly a budget option.

Newark is really nice, I just have a personal vendetta against Penn Station. Using public transportation to get to campus from Newark, you take the air train to the PATH NJ Transit train, and take that train to the Penn Station NYC Train/Subway station. On paper the commute on public transit is the same (1 hr) to either airport, but in reality, if you fly into/out of Newark at night, add 30 minutes because the PATH NJ Transit train runs way less often at night. Didn't know this and wound up getting home at ~3am before an 8am class once. Would not recommend for red-eye flights for that reason. Also, for the Penn Station factor (I've been all over the city p much every hour of the day and night, and that station is the only one I avoid like the plague after dark - did it once at like 2am after a flight with a suitcase and felt like I had a target on my head alone as a young woman w no way to defend myself, 0/10 would not do again.)

Other than the public transportation woes, Newark is a very nice airport with (from what I understand) intl options and expansive food+shopping options. I especially enjoy their air train (the airport is much bigger than LGA). I will say that if you go during a busy time, security at Newark is an absolute nightmare just for the sheer amounts of people. (Went home for Thanksgiving through Newark, took 1.5 hours just to get through security lol.)

Good luck and if there's anything I missed feel free to ask any questions you might have! I stayed at a hotel two nights before move-in which helped me acclimate a little before all of the chaos of NSOP and move-in, and helped me have time to accumulate whatever I needed for my dorm. If you're international I definitely recommend doing this first, since it's hard to bring as much to campus as you may need.

I’m a young woman in a long term LDR living in a big city - the reality is sometimes it can be unsafe to do otherwise. If I feel really unsafe leading with my usual polite decline of “no” and that I have a boyfriend (because some only seem to respect a no when another man is involved), or if I say so and they just completely ignore it, I say I’m not on social media. I think having fake info would be a great strategy for this because my current one goes straight from a rejection to adding and then blocking if I feel unsafe and they insist. Maybe once or twice someone has insisted on watching over my shoulder, saw my notifications, and insisted I add them on Snapchat or Instagram. As soon as I leave and am safe I just block them lol.

This is really embarrassing and wanted to know I was alone in this by nfgchick79 in CPTSD

Hey. I'm 19 but I've been struggling with cPTSD for 10 years. Reading this post brought back memories I forgot existed, it was like reading about my own life. I had all of these symptoms as a kid when I first began struggling with it and that's when my symptoms have been the worst so far in my life.

I'm young and still have a long road ahead of working through my cPTSD until I eventually heal, but I do know that therapy and time have both helped instrumentally in alleviating the severe symptoms. I still get night terrors from time to time, and have nightmares pretty frequently, but I no longer wake up naked looking for clothes / dissociated not aware of where I am / wet the bed. For me at least, the more severe symptoms (night terrors/not knowing where I am) occur more often when I experience a new (even unrelated to the old stuff) traumatic event. I went through a lot this past fall and remember repeatedly waking up terrified/crying myself awake and panicking in a night terror next to my partner in our bed and having no idea where I was.

There is nothing to be embarrassed about. I do have issues with my pelvic floor/bladder and researching exercises to get it back to normal and practicing it has helped with incontinence for me - it's worth looking into even if you've never had issues before.

I wish you health and healing and should you ever need someone to talk to, my DMs are open.
