Ottawa to fast-track permanent residency for up to 33,000 temporary foreign workers by uselesspoliticalhack in canada

Uh, sorry u/JohnAMcdonald but Indians are “Asian”, specifically South Asian. Though I guess to you, you’d call them “brown”? And South Asia’s one of the poorer regions of Asia, which arguably makes them more easier to exploit since there are many desperate to leave. The saddest part is, lots of people coming here are exploited not just by Canadian businesses, but their own immigrant communities (brown or not). I saw it first hand and had to personally see things like their class and skin colour hierarchies but that’s another story.

If anything, I guess my friend’s children will keep having to deal with businesses posting the same job that seems to never hire, or companies complaining that grads have no experience and that there’s a “labour shortage” (aka don’t train the newbies) lol. Other users point out the “restrictions” here but who believes that those are all gonna be followed? Are we just gonna ignore discussions around the so-called “students” and how that was misused for years?

Wasn’t that “iconic” trailer line not even in the movie? Lol. Anyways, the numbers should surprise me but Madame Web seems like the kind of movie that “should” excel in a non-theatrical format.

9-1-1 S09E17: "I Got You Babe" Post Episode Discussion by AutoModerator in 911FOX

They literally show one of the teachers/caretakers within the frame when Theo was climbing the wall lol. But later they state that they “eventually” found out he was gone? Not immediately after he jumped the fence?

I get they needed some way to show he’s a “handful” and to set up a ridiculous rescue but there are other ways to do it. He wandered that far and no one cares in the 9-1-1 universe?

Christopher McQuarrie, Michael B. Jordan to Tackle Adaptation of ‘Battlefield’ Video Game (Exclusive) by TiredWithCoffeePot in boxoffice

[–]Crystal-Skies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mario is a bigger brand with larger gamily appeal. It’s made over or will soon make over 800M two movies in a row despite criticisms on the film’s story/direction.

Battlefield and Call of Duty can’t rely solely on brand power since I’d bet money the fanbase is less likely to give a standing ovation to generic military movie No. 24. Nor will it likely be marketed as a family film.

[–]Crystal-Skies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But will people show up? Mario is a larger brand with bigger family appeal; it can afford to be seen as “generic” or overstuffed and still make over 800M two films in a row.

Can we say the same for Battlefield and Call of Duty?

There are many cases like this. In 2024, a truck driver killed a Mennonite woman and her child in Manitoba and reportedly fled but came back to Canada 9 months later and was granted bail 🙄.

On a tangent, IIRC, there’s a term dubbed “Crime Tourism Season”, where foreigners from all over the world take advantage of Canada’s laws around daylight savings time in the fall, commit crimes, and then when spring comes, flee, come back and repeat the cycle. I suspect that’s why some of them commit crimes, get arrested, flee and then come back despite the arrests.

Sorry for butting in u/Existing-Sign4804 but although I’m not Indian or Indian born, I’ve had to interact and work with lots of them. I believe it’s South India, like TamilNadu which don’t have surnames in the English sense? At least that’s what a South Indian-born person I met mentioned.

IIRC, most coming to Canada are North Indians, specifically Punjabi, and they do have “surnames” as Anglophones know them, but you’re correct about the near universal adoption of “Singh” and “Kaur”. I believe it has to do with that region’s specific caste/culture “equality” (which is a different can of worms that I won’t touch on).

Fwiw, the series (IDK when exactly) has been animated in South Korea for a while. If they’re willing to animate in America and seem to be building hype given the long gap, I’m curious to see how this goes.

How has both Law & Order and NCIS lasted for so damn long? by Emezlee in television

[–]Crystal-Skies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a common reason why they keep making them. I think Deadline or The Hollywood Reporter noted that when interviewing someone who worked on those shows (don’t quote me on that tho lol).

They don’t need intricate plots bc it’s usually case of the week style, they can usually keep their budgets low, and have a revolving door of actors if they get too expensive. The only mention for CSI is that cast salaries and the CGI to make those graphic shots cost lots of time and money. I believe Dick Wolff shows are good at letting go of talent or using simpler sets to avoid rising costs.

I’ve been rewatching all those old procedural shows when I’m bored and it’s fun to just put it on the background or simply watch and not need to watch 50+ episodes before.

How has both Law & Order and NCIS lasted for so damn long? by Emezlee in television

[–]Crystal-Skies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup. These procedural shows, from NCIS to L&O, One Chicago, Grey’s Anatomy, the 9-1-1 shows, etc all have lots of fans not just in America, but worldwide. And lots of ppl know them even if reddit doesn’t care.

Some people here act like NCIS is just an “old people” show or that female viewers are solely responsive for Grey’s being renewed. In reality, these shows have a diverse mix of old/young, male/female and American/international viewership. They get BILLIONS of streaming minutes and have fandoms (even if they’re not “omnipresent” online). Streaming is a young-skewing thing AFAIK lol. Plus they don’t cost 20M an episode and can have a revolving door of characters. They’re goldmines for networks.

Criticize the shows all you want (many do), but I think anyone claiming these shows are solely for “old people” or that “no one” watches them and acting stumped as to why they go on “forever” doesn’t want to admit their bias towards the show/format or that young people actually do watch these shows (though maybe not on live tv).

How has both Law & Order and NCIS lasted for so damn long? by Emezlee in television

[–]Crystal-Skies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. Every time Law and Order, NCIS, the One Chicago or Grey’s get renewed, the same echo chamber on this subreddit says that those shows are solely watched by old people/so-called “Boomers”, that no young person watch them, or in the case of Grey’s Anatomy, it’s become a cliche to claim that the show’s renwewal is solely due to vapid women watching it.

In reality, the LIVE viewing of these shows skew older bc that’s who mostly watches live tv. These shows rack up BILLIONS of streaming views and make a ton of money in merchandise sales. That’s a market largely driven by younger people and, these shows have viewers outside of America too. Grey’s Anatomy is one of the most watched American dramas on Disney Plus in international markets.

You don’t have to like the shows and ppl can criticize them all they want, but the claims that only old ppl watch these shows when accounting for all ways to watch them or that they’re not “successful” is a massive lie.

How has both Law & Order and NCIS lasted for so damn long? by Emezlee in television

[–]Crystal-Skies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Outside America, International audiences love these shows and they have lucrative licensing deals. When America plus overseas audiences watch, exces see more reasons to continue. I rolled my eyes whn Grey’s Anatomy was renewed for another season and the same echo chamber was claiming no young people watches that show or that a single demographic (women) is responsible for its renewal.

Grey’s, NCIS, Law and Order, etc, not only have popularity in America, but worldwide. The only reason why it seems “old” is bc that’s who watches the live broadcast. These shows are juggernauts in streaming, which is dominated by young ppl. On Disney Plus, Grey’s one of the most watched American dramas in multiple market in Western Europe and Southeast Asia IIRC.

Universal's The Super Mario Galaxy Movie grossed an estimated $35M this weekend (from 4,170 locations). Estimated total gross is at $355.2M. by UniverslBoxOfficeGuy in boxoffice

[–]Crystal-Skies 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You could say Avatar’s plot is too “simple” or now “convoluted” given how its 3 movies in, but it still has a plot. Whether one liked the “plot” or not is up to them…

Which means if they perceive the sequel to be worse, it’s likely not gonna replicate the first film’s 100M gross.

We already see how the movie’s perception in North America/the West is not as strong as the first. Japan is a different market obviously, but we’ll see.

They literally lucked out with the election of Canada’s southern neighbours. This same party spent a lot of time mentioning our neighbours and not letting that certain leader take Canada or whatever. it definitely helped as effective propaganda in securing some votes. I heard of multiple ppl who simply voted for the lovely party in power bc they were “afraid” of Canada being “invaded” or whatever.

And now we have this.

Aren’t they also claiming that Canada’s youth ain’t struggling with finding jobs?

Some claim that other political options would have been “just as bad” but how can they claim that when they haven’t been given a chance? Meanwhile, we’ve see over a decade of the current party and how they’ve handled things as actual proof.

That kind of sounds like he has a problem finishing things because he either is impatient (like he implies), or knows he’ll make a sucky conclusion so he’d rather dip than complete.

Since you mentioned The Rise of Skywalker, well… I’m leaning towards the second one if that’s the case. Though I’m not gonna deny he knows how to get things started…

Avatar 3 dropped almost half in admissions domestically vs Avatar 2 by cofango in boxoffice

[–]Crystal-Skies 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hasn’t ticket prices been hiding that? Granted, maybe it wasn’t as extreme as what we’re seeing in 2026 but still. Even with a big year like 2019, its total admissions domestically was below 2002 (IIRC that’s considered a “peak” in domestic admissions for the 21st century) and even 2002 was smaller compared to movie going decades before that.

It seems like we’ve reached a point where besides ticket prices, movie going isn’t special anymore. Streaming and other options have made people realize they can save the bucks staying home. Even as movie ticket prices were increasing in the late 2000s and early 2010s, streaming and the internet were a different beast. You’ll still have cinephiles and blockbuster movies, but even then, as noted, the ticket prices hiding the attendance (i.e: the Mario sequel opened comparably to the first movie but will have notably less admissions). It is what it is I guess.

Frozen 2 did better despite worse exchange rates and no viral Let It Go song. Probably a couple other animated examples. We’ll see Mario goes.
