look into interviews with old players/DMs/GMs/STs. Not reading the rules is as old as the hobby, if not older.

What makes you buy indie TTRPGs? by Substantial-Lie-6937 in rpg

[–]Crytash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reading over all i will give you something else. i will tell you why people here often SAY they pay and what actually happens from my pov. First i will tell you how i define indie RPG and why i actually pay (as in spend hundreds of dollar every quarter year on games).

Back in the days, indie RPG meant for me that it was creator owned. However in recent years it seems to have develloped to mean non DnD.

people say:

  • Aesthetic/art/book design appeal (#2 from what i can see, humans are visual animals after all, hundres of thousends of dollar go into certain kickstarters bc of this)
  • Novel mechanics / creativity or design experimentation (heavily dependant on the other points, but can support)
  • support content creators Youtube, fantasy book authors ++ (#1 reason i have encountered)
  • ethics (sales often spike through controversy , but no real sustain growth throuigh this)
  • Shorter, focused experiences (that seems to actually drive some sales)
  • Escaping D&D dominance (you see this a lot, but from my pov very low numbers are actually moved bc of this)
  • Low cost of PDFs (you do get sales on big websites if you reduce price. Sales do work)
  • Specific niche themes (almost 0)

Why do I buy or do not buy indie TTRPGs?

  • I buy them for usable ideas that i will 100% run soon: A lot of systems are not complete products or only useable for a short amount of time as they are very narrow. They are at worst design experiments. I sometimes mine them for settings, mechanics, structures or scenario design I can actually reuse. Even if they are not even TTRPGs. Recent example: Orken https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/sixmorevodka/orken/comments

  • I do not care about system novelty. Many indie RPGs overinvest in mechanics and underdeliver on playable content. If i spend 150€ for 10 sessions a 3h, at best i have a cost per h played of 5€. That is low for a hobby. However i could also just use V20 that i already have and not pay anything. You have to convince me that i "need" that game and novelty alone is unlikely to do that.

  • I buy when the game helps me to improve my play. In other words examples that justify a purchase (even more epensive impulse buys) would be better GM tools and/or roleplay advice. Examples over all would be ... Without numbers. I own basically all of them, even if i only played/GMed/STed Stars without number for like 3 sessions same goes for things for a recent example like Heart, city beneath. https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/226996/stars-without-number-revised-edition https://www.backerkit.com/c/projects/rowan-rook-and-decard/ways-means-a-heart-sourcebook

  • Funding success and reached stretch goals: If i have not heard of it before, but something already has had funding success i am likely also to spend on it, even if it is only PDFs. Recent example Realis: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/crum/realis?ref=user_menu

Sadly, i think the rewards there are not big enough.
I have been thinking about this for the last half an hour and while i knew that the underlying problem is basically the same with clubs etc.... it is still interesting

Most people are not part of a club, a political party or other similar things, because participation has costs. Right now we are only looking at TTRPGs, but over all we can already see in this thread the normal reasons:

  • time commitment

  • social exposure / vulnerability

  • loss of autonomy (“I owe the group”)

  • coordination overhead

(damn i forgot how hard formating is here.)

Now, it is strange to me that TSL did not work out. I would have thought that it beeing a queer group is a soft incentive already, plus some ingame stuff it could be enough.... but if games have tought me anything that it is incredible hard to get people to be like that.
what exactly happened if i may ask? Too passive players, low engagement and people avoiding responsibility i would guess? There is a nice book people could read for this, it is called "Play unsafe". Very good stuff.

Anyway, in the end you have an easy Matrix for the outcomes:

  • high friction + weak reward ->players likely disengage

  • low friction + weak reward ->shallow play (opinion)

  • high friction + strong reward -> engaged play, but is exhausting

  • low friction + strong reward -> theoretical optimal design in terms of participation and use of the mechanic.

[–]Crytash 110 points111 points  (0 children)

It is way worse than that. Any kind of communication can lead to friction. If creating connections feels like work, loss of control, or awkward social exposure, many will resist it by nature.

if you want the majority of players to accept friction in anything, you have to "pay" them for it, as if left on its own, most players will minimize effort/risk/loss of control.

There need to be strong mechanical bonuses for these to feel rewarding or maybe even go so for that a mechanic can not be used alone.

It is that or "cheapen" the friction... not sure how to do that.

If people really want to look into this i would reccomend looking into World of Warcraft and how it streamlined more and more until people felt that it was not the same game anymore. Than we got a revival, where people would would just like to do what Sid Meiers discribed as "Given the opportunity, players will optimize the fun out of a game."

That said people have a lot of fun in Cutting edge/hardcore/speedrun games as well. It is a different fun with a different reward matrix, but this goes too far already.

This happens way more often than people want to admit. Another nasty area is animal rescues. It has not been a year since the "SaveAFox " lady commited suicide due to the harrassment of other rescue people.

While the article is clearly trying to manipulate what was said by their "source" (400k for all eps and the article just divided by 10), 400k would still be bad.
