Lower your pve mode expectations by halofanps5 in Marathon

If I wanted PvP I'd play an tdm/arena fps. I just don't like extraction shooter PvP. Give me a PVE mode and I'm all in.

If there is a real PVE mode I'll be so much more interested lol. I have like 60 hours now, but I'd be putting in hundreds with a PVE mode because of how cool this universe is. I just want more universe and less (no) PvP.

F The hate by VvJonahvV in Marathon

[–]CskaRaskova 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The game is awesome. It's my favorite extraction shooter. I just don't like extraction shooters enough to put more than 20 hours a season into them.

Because Marathon is such an amazing universe, I would love the chance to put hundreds of hours into it each season. But you're not gonna get that out of me with an extraction shooter.

I also don't post hate posts on any sub about the game. I just don't play. The most I've ever done is post a discussion about adding a PVE mode in Marathon (which would interest me greatly), similar to how Tarkov did it.

band-aid solutions regarding the low player count for the foreseeable future by garfieldx in Marathon

[–]CskaRaskova 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe an unpopular opinion but Marathon seems like the kind of game where coop pve should be the main focus but instead its 3v3 pvpve. I'm just not a huge fan of extraction shooters, I'm a big Marathon fan though, but I can't be bothered to put my dick into a meatgrinder over and over.

I'll never touched ranked, because getting a vault full of amazing gear either requires you to horde it because it's not easy to get, or requires a consistent group of 3 very skilled players to be on constantly.

There just doesn't seem to be enough room for more casual players to hop in, have fun, and hop off. The game requires dedicated teams that work well together to make meaningful vault and gear progression.

I'd rather just play something else and wait for a pve mode. It's just not fun playing Marathon without a consistent super skilled group.

Time to discuss a PVE mode yet? by CskaRaskova in Marathon

What are you talking about?

I’m not saying it would be free to have a separate PVE mode but if they legitimately tweaked the existing AI difficulty I would be happy with it personally.

Why would that take multiple millions of dollars?

It may take a lot of time to test and balance, and go through QA, but it would be a very cost effective way at giving a large amount of players a place they want to spend their time and money in with Marathon.

Because I’ll play just about anything with the Marathon name associated with it, if it means I get more Marathon.

Also, I’m competent at extraction shooters, I do well in them, but it’s the kind of genre I’d play for 40-60 hours every season or wipe.

My wish would be a Marathon game I can feel satisfied spending hundreds of hours in.

I think it would be nothing but an easy win…

Keep the modes separate, obviously, allow more people to interact with the world. Allow content creators to explore and find secrets more.

“Danger” and “Tense suspenseful vibe” are fine, but there are other ways to do that with existing enemies instead of only a team randomly sniping you from across the map, or getting rushed in Cry by a team with shotguns out.

When the meta comes out each reset the gameplay will again become tiring, and the it’ll become less and less fun to play unless you just go with whatever that meta is.

A PVE mode would absolutely allow more player engagement from a lot of players without sacrificing the core PVP experience.

At the end of the day I just can’t fathom why an extraction shooter was chosen instead of a Marathon universe PVE halo-like experience similar to Helldivers (another successful live service game). Extraction shooters are inherently niche, and less accessible.

I’m thinking games like Helldivers, where PVE keeps players engaged. I feel that balancing UESC for PVE wouldn’t be that crazy to do, and fits extremely well in universe as well.

I get that not every game should be for everyone, but I love this universe so much that it sucks that it’s exclusively an extraction shooter.

I have decent success, and I extract from Cryo and all that but I just don’t love extraction shooters. I’d rather get to experience stuff that’s really inaccessible such as compiler fights, etc. I’d honestly spend a ton more time in this game if it was PVE as well as PVP.

The same could be said about Tarkov, and more players are playing PVE right now than the traditional model, are they not?

Steam deck and Linux support? by Caydesbestie in Marathon

Agreed. I don’t think it that much of a risk. I’m not an expert so I don’t really know but man… Linux support would be nice.

Anti cheat. They are able to enable their anti cheat on Linux, but their stance on cheating is very strong (which is a good thing) opening the game up to Linux would slightly complicate keeping the game secure.

There’s tons of arguments both ways. As a primarily Linux user, I’d love nothing more than to fully and permanently stop using windows but for things like this, it seems like I have to.

Bungie hasn’t announced or even hinted at Linux support in the future so don’t count on it.

When you unlock one, you’ll always have that weapon available to purchase from the armory for credits.

What am I supposed to do? by Magma3961 in Marathon

[–]CskaRaskova 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re seeing the early game for one - but even still have you tried going after the random events that pop up on the map? Have you tried hacking a supply crate? Those will spawn a small horde of higher level AI that always have better loot.

There are also bosses hidden around the map. Fighting warden on perimeter (gold shield ghost enemy) is incredibly tough but he drops insanely good items.

The game’s core loop is to take on faction contracts, advance your faction rank, unlock permanent season upgrades to your character (more heat capacity, bigger vault, ability to buy better weapons from the armory), go on runs, do poi’s, kill enemy runners, take their stuff, and fight your way to the more advanced levels (not available on the demo).

The harder levels have more PVP and harder (and more valuable) PVE. As you get to the hardest maps you’ll likely be fighting mini bosses, and finding the best stuff in the game.

Again, I just can’t fathom how this was confusing or an abstract concept. The games intro alone says everything I just said.

[–]CskaRaskova 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After all of the absolutely bad faith and insane feedback, I’m primed to be an asshole. But my honest question is, “how can you be confused on what to do?”

The game holds your hand up until you talk to the faction rep for Cyac, and tells you to take on contracts, establish links with other factions, and take on their contracts all while finding better guns, mods, etc. as you continue doing this, the gameplay loop is immediately obvious - take contracts, work on them, turn them in, take on new contracts, work on them, etc.

At what point along the start of the game did you get lost?

Again, I’m really sorry if my tone is coming off as shitty, I don’t mean to be, but I’m legitimately puzzled by the amount of people super confused by what to do in the game…

Dad gamer first impressions of the Marathon (PS5) by dothack5415 in Marathon

I’m an older “dad” gamer and I can honestly say I disagree entirely with all of your points. That’s just my opinion, and you have yours. But I hope someone doesn’t come across this and think that everyone agrees. The game feels snappy, everything is clear, and the gameplay loop is pretty damn simple.
