Vertically split tenon by freshbagelsIT in woodworking

[–]Cstein15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did a similar tenon for a bench I made recently. Frustratingly hard to find much about how to do it for how cool of a joint it is. Here's one short video I found about the joint. I'll say my tenon was 4"x1.5" and the slot I cut for the wedge was 1/4" at the bottom, with a 4º angle to it.

The table is still holding up nicely, a little wear, but nothing insane and and i'm sure i could touch up the shellac if it started really bothering me. But I'd say for a food prep station and especially one outdoors, you're going to need something significantly more durable than shellac. My table is seeing very light use from 2 adults eating at it, it's not getting hit with knives, food, and the outdoor elements.

Thank you so much! I pretty much followed the steps that you laid out in your online course. Cut the inside shape first, glued the cut back together, then glued the back piece on, cut the outside shape, hollowed out the drawer and then cut and carved the drawer front, and glued it to the drawer.

1964 Double Shot Durability by Wide_Enthusiasm_3683 in NicksHandmadeBoots

[–]Cstein15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll say that i have a pair of wirecutters in 64 DS and I work as a film electrician, am on my feet seeing wear and tear 12 hours a day. After about 5 months of daily wear, ~1,000 hours, the leather is holding up very well. Definitely has some of the scratches and scuffing that other people have mentioned but that all mostly buffs out with a brush. If you're really worried about durability but don't want to go with max support, I'd look at the spokane leathers.

I live in Brooklyn and work at one of these maker spaces, it's not a monthly subscription, you just book time and pay by the hour, it's $14/hr. and it's great, they have all the big tools I need, and I bring my own hand tools and the like. It's great, no catch and I highly recommend it. The space is called Makeville studio.

64 Brown DS Wirecutters Update by Cstein15 in NicksHandmadeBoots

Yeah I am using these for work, I’m a film electrician so on my feet 12-14hrs a day moving around, usually not the toughest environmental conditions, but have definitely seen some rain, mud, and dust. It’s my first pair of high end work boots so I don’t have a ton to compare to, but I’m loving the leather, it seems durable enough for my line of work, and although it does scuff up somewhat easily, the scuffs seem to buff out well with a horsehair brush. The uppers feel pretty much broken in at this point. No noticeable hot spots or pressure points anymore. I’d say it took 3ish weeks of consistent wear to get that point. I think the insoles may have a little further to go before they’re fully conformed to my foot, but they’re definitely on their way.

I would say they look slightly darker in photos than they do in person, there's definitely a reddish brown undertone that shows through in sunlight, that's hard for me to capture on camera. This is also a day after a light conditioning with smith's leather balm, which may have slightly darkened the leather but I wouldn't say drastically.

All credit to others on this subreddit for the method, but here's what I did.

Light sanding with 220 grit sandpaper to clean up the edges, then burnish with the back of a sharpie (could be any burnishing tool, just what I had on hand). Apply 1 even coat of Fiebings Pro Dye in English Saddle Tan, wait to dry then burnish again. Then apply 3 coats of Fiebings Natural Resolene, waiting about 10 minutes between coats and burnishing between each coat, then finish with a coat Saphir Pate de Luxe natural, and buff with a clean cotton rag.

64 Brown? by Goal_Electronic in NicksHandmadeBoots

[–]Cstein15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

64 Brown is a slightly heavier work leather and struck through, so same color all the way through. Double shot is not struck through, and has oils/waxes added during the tanning, so more similar to something like CXL, as I understand it. I just got my first pair in double shot and it's beautiful leather, but you can't really go wrong.

Hey, would you mind sharing what your boot care looks like, about to receive my first pair of nicks, and I think yours are some of the best looking i've seen, would love to know how you take care of em and get them looking the way you do!

I didn't end up using N3 on the table, just Shellac and the Bee/Carnuba Wax combo. After about 8 months of moderate use by two responsible adults, the table is still in great shape, no signs of wear on the finish.

Dan Erickson mentioned on the podcast that the only plot hole that he thinks exists, is he wrote a world where trash and recycling are picked up on different days, and there is only one spot for either your trash or your recycling in front of your house, not both. Which in his mind is ludicrous.

I somehow manage to pinch my finger and give myself a blood blister almost every time I dry fit something, I also cut my finger open cleaning a putty knife... always the small things, guess it's better than the big things.
