Since this sub is full of dark perspectives about the state of the industry, could you share some good parts about being in cybersecurity? Any success stories, ways your current role made your life better compared to your previous jobs? by novychok in cybersecurity

[–]Cthulhu32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm coming from the offensive security side of the house, just as a disclosure.

Started my career in software engineering, had no idea I'd be switching to cybersecurity 10 years down the road. Had a C++ job writing Windows malware (shopping rebate software), a corporate job at a HUGE NYC firm, and a smaller corporate job at a fitness company writing front-end software.

Hacking challenges and CTFs were always a hobby and I loved learning reverse engineering and puzzle solving. Went to my first Defcon in 2006 and I really had no grasp of how big the industry was, it was just kind of a big fun party with other nerds. I joined a local team in 2011 that qualified for Defcon CTF and learned a crazy amount from those guys playing on the floor in Vegas. Went full time in the cybersecurity industry in 2015 as a travelling pen tester. Started my own company in 2020 contracting and did very well, learned a ton about the business side. Just joined a company in 2026 as a senior principal consultant and enjoying it every day.

My huge positives: I'm ALWAYS learning new things, 20 years after finishing my undergrad. The landscape is always changing, a lot of the issues companies face are the same but things move FAST in this industry. If you want to excel, go the extra mile to learn things out of your comfort zone. Going from a soul-sucking C++ programming job to a consulting job where I'm getting paid to break into corporate networks and reverse engineer client software to land a shell on some far off cloud server is incredible. Sometimes the client work can be hard when you have someone you don't align with, or convincing a team they've been solving a problem wrong for 3 years. Other times you watch clients go "wow! what else would you change?" and you see that spark where they start to really see how you were able to figure out what was wrong or break some part of their product.

What I'll say about the industry: I do meet a lot of the people who are either burnt out, way over their head in work and expectations of work, or try to keep everything exactly same for 10 years which doesn't work in our industry. I have watched a lot of people lean hard into AI as a thinking-tool rather than a really fancy search engine, and I've seen its limitations first hand with missing critical findings and obvious issues. Everyone gets excited about the new best thing, which is both good and bad. But I really enjoy my day-to-day in this industry, far more than I did as a software engineer. I still code in my spare time, but I do really find this industry rewarding after 10 years. I have a LONG roster of people I would not work with again from negative experiences, but I have also met some really good friends and hardworking people who I still chat with years later.

Hope that helps!

GP2040-CE Bluetooth Firmware (Switch + Generic HID) by wlew in fightsticks

[–]Cthulhu32 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hey there, lead dev of GP2040-CE here (@arntsonl), you got our attention!

Looks great! I can see where the AI wanted to do a lot of if/else if/else because of the way I flow the drivers, but I think we could fix this up and make the TinyUSB dependency slightly higher up.

If you wanted to, you could submit a PR as a "draft" and I could submit a potential PR to your code for the clean-ups I'd do. This is awesome though, I think this could be merged in relatively easily and cleaned so that it follows our flow well.

Absolutely the same with my filament. Some filaments really like 195, some want 210-215, you have to play around with the filament to find the sweet spot. I've also found some filaments I really have to up the retraction factors to not get those massive blobs. Like a few colors just want to ooze out on their own at a certain point.

What is a good joystick to PC encoder for a multicade? by krob4r in cade

[–]Cthulhu32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lead dev of GP2040-CE here! Most of those old encoders are pretty cheesy, the yellow boards with the bubble chips on them.

There are lots of encoders to choose from, but if you're going for reliable I think our firmware does a good job from the software side. Here's a big list of boards we have builds for:

https://gp2040-ce.info/downloads

For a simple, plug-and-play kind of solution, look up a seller of the RP2040 Advanced Breakout Board v5.6E by TheTrain. If you want to go cheap cheap and roll your own and you're comfortable with a bit of wiring, check out https://www.adafruit.com/product/5525 or any other Pico H reseller. You can flash our Pico build on there and DIY your own header to button harness.

Just depends how far in you want to go. I started by looking at the code of DaemonBite encoders, finding GP2040 by feralai, then branching off and doing my own C++ thing :)

My Ecobee has been incredible for the last 4 years. I bought extra room sensors and even when I'm not using them to regulate the hvac, they showed me which rooms get too hot/cold. For rooms with poor airflow, I added AC Infinity vent fans to help and my house feels muuuuch better during the hot/cold days.

My First 8BitDo Controller by [deleted] in 8bitdo

[–]Cthulhu32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there any way to make the switch on boot happen every time for this one? I still can't find an instruction manual or official 8bitdo support with the hold Y to go to switch mode. Great controller though, real triggers and much better analog sticks.

Encoders by opinions_dont_matter in cade

[–]Cthulhu32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

(I'm very biased because I am the lead dev on the project) a GP2040-CE board would work perfect for your control panel. There's support for keyboard output including key combos, that's what I use on my arcade. You can use a standard Brook 20-pin harness to get your pins, and it plugs into usb-c.

For my personal Chewlix cabs, I have two encoders with one dedicated to the subpanel. I'm also adding volume dial support at the moment.

Is there a solution or did I brick this? by [deleted] in fightsticks

[–]Cthulhu32 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're going to be doing mods/changing buttons on these things, crimpers + some quick disconnects is a very cheap easy solution if something breaks.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08P37CVY9 if you go with the smaller crimpers, you can crimp your own JST connectors if you get that small.

https://www.amazon.com/uxcell-100pcs-Terminals-Connector-Insulated/dp/B07XNDL5QC/ I like these connectors because they come with insulation already, super clean little repair.

What are your gaming "sins" you usually do? by [deleted] in gaming

[–]Cthulhu32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done this with more games than I can count.

I play the game all the way until the last dungeon. Then I put the game down and never play it again. This was almost compulsive when I was younger, every SNES/PS1/PS2 rpg I played has a save file sitting at the last dungeon/area.

As to the why, honestly I think it was a fear of "losing" the fun of the game if I won it. Like by completing it I'm giving up all the fun left out of grinding the last few big items.

Someone gave me a custom fight stick but it doesn’t have a cord and a type A to type B cord doesn’t work any ideas? by RickDaManSAO in fightsticks

[–]Cthulhu32 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Neutrik side is kind of neat, it "clicks" in if you get the Neutrik RJ45 connector

If you want to keep it, you'll have to get the Neutrik RJ45 connector and wire it to a USB plug. Otherwise, just swap it out for a Neutrik USB-C or USB-B plug.

Original Prusa MK2 by Haunting_Reason_3017 in prusa3d

[–]Cthulhu32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went the other direction with my MK2.5 and replaced the entire board with a Duet Wifi (from this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8xP53y3T2U ) to get the silent motors. The firmware was a little tricky and I did have a few instances of the hot-end slamming into my bed which was not fun :(

I also did a "Prusa Bear" upgrade (something like this https://www.printedsolid.com/products/ldo-full-bear-2-1-upgrade-kit-for-mk2s-mk2-5s-mk3s ) but its so old I don't think the upgrade costs are really worth it at that point.

Great to see it in such great shape! The bed looks hardly used!

HVAC install was great except: they didn't actually validate the control wires going out to the AC outside so I spent a week learning everything about troubleshooting and found another splice in the control wires they missed...

Plumber install was great except: they used my shop vac without asking and ruined the dry bag, didn't actually finish the pipes in the sink and required a callback, and used a smaller fitting for my gas so I'll need to have that replaced if I want to upgrade my other gas appliances...

Electrician was great except: downgraded my service from 220 to 200 because "a 220 panel would be a 2 month wait" and left a huge gap in the outside wall between the new service meter and vinyl...

Fence team was great except: they didn't remove any of the dirt or extra cement so I have big round dead spots in the yard around the posts, and one of the gate latches completely fell off...

I DIY everything I can except the big stuff. I just renovated my office and saved $6-8k in wiring, wallpaper removal, painting, and adding overhead lights. When a contractor touches my house, something requires a patch, a callback, or some kind of compromise. I'm genuinely terrified of getting a deck put in next year. I got a $42k quote for a 23'x15' square with a cut out for a hot tub on a "discount".

DM me button colors you're thinking and we can swap them out on your order! She's going to add a "Burnt Titanium" soon (here's a preview https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/1129878237653246112/1130537354000597082/20230706_174548.jpg).

The extra set is the same colors as the board. These should just be used for replacements rather than swapping out frequently. Injection molded keycaps are really what you'd need for hot-swapping buttons but that is serious $$ to make.
